** The Official Nvidia GeForce 'Pascal' Thread - for general gossip and discussions **

Weird if true. I don't see what NVidia has to gain by doing that. Sure, you could say that nvidia want to force you to buy a ti or Titan to get 3/3x SLI but those cards don't exist. The people that are going to go out and buy a 4x1080 now will probably upgrade to a 1080Ti down the road, and even if they don't, why prevent them buying 4 GPUs now in the hopes they will be 2-4 more expensive GPUS in the future?

I think the founders edition is a great move by nvidia and it basically reverses their decision to gimp their standard bios.

for the 980 we were forced to use custom bios written by 'some dude on thar intawebs'.

they have listened to user feedback and are putting this functionality back in.

the AIB's won't mind much because the additional voltage regulation required to get the extra 2% out of the chip won't be possible even on a cherry picked reference board.

I.e the gigabyte g1 cards were able to hit 1600+ and the ref cards could only do 15xx.

at a guess this might mean a 2.2 ghz ceiling for the ref and 2.3ghz for the custom boards (on water).

Nope other brands will be selling the exact same card. The extra price is as said, so nvidia aren't seen to be competing with their card partners.

or maybe nvidia offers AIBs less margins at the MSRP than usual, but a 100$ leeway to adjudt the prices, marketing PR for the card to be perceived as cheaper.
thats a possibility, and if i am right AIB prices will be closer to founder than the MSRP.

Have you found info confirming that the founders edition has a good bios or are you guessing?

So if the 1080 founders has a good bios with a high power limit, and keeps the card at good temps and low noise, I guess it would be a good option.
