Just for a lark: If it takes 18 months to get yields good enough for a 350mm2 chip on 10nm, how many cards do you think NV will tap from 16FF+? Assuming they hit volume in Q4 this year.

For example: 680, Titan, 780, 780 Ti, Titan Black

No need to worry about what order they come in, just how many and how far apart.

Is a gtx1080 too much overkill for 1080p 144hz

I know a 1070 will do but I'm thinking a little future here

I would say No. Although a 980Ti can push 100+ frames easily at 1080p maxed out.

A 1080 will hold 144hz in everything 1080p though.

Wait for reviews and make a decision then as a 1070 may be perfect for you.

Depends what you have now, if you have a 980ti then I would not bother for 1080p, if you have a 970 then a 1070 or 1080 would be a nice upgrade. Although you can use 2x or 3x DSR which is pretty good but not really worth upgrading card for.

I have a feeling that 16nmFF will be around for a while and maybe there will be a 1080 refresh, once it gets to 10nm I think it gets tricky for them to get much smaller without changing to different materials like carbon etc.

Do you think a 660ti or a 670 would drop a lot when the 1080 and 1070 are out? I might get one while I am waiting, my 980ti is gone and this 5870 is really not good on my 3440x1440 monitor (also it refuses to let me run 2560x1080 full screen at over 60hz, it works at 60hz but at 80hz it is 1:1 as a small box in the middle). Or does anyone know how I can get 2560x1080 80hz to work full screen on the 5870? On Nvidia I could just make a custom resolution and it would just work but not on AMD :(

It amazes me people are willing to spend 600 on a gfx card and then run 16:9 aspect ratio lol :p

if every game just worked without tinkering i would be using 21:9
However
1. they dont.
2. their only one decent one (the ASUS, the Acer has so many problems its hard to get a good one)
3. i love my 4K :D

Depends on preference. Some people just dont like 21:9.

I still prefer 144hz 16:9 over 100hz 21:9 personally.

Love my TN swift. Will do nicely until they do a nice 32-34" 4k 144hz panel :).

I've both 21:9 (Dell IPS) and 16:9 (TN Swift) monitors on my desk - for online FPS gaming like BF4, etc. just come back to the 16:9 for more than just response and clarity of motion (which is actually pretty decent on the Dell) though I do like playing some single player stuff on the 21:9 which can be immersive and I'd probably move to playing some MMOs on it if I had a 100+Hz G-Sync one.

I had a 4K panel in place of the 21:9 for awhile but I didn't really get on with it - while it had its uses I didn't feel it could adequately replace either - for online FPS games I don't think I'll be moving on from 2560x1440@120+Hz even if there were 4K 120+Hz monitors.

I was interested in the performance of the 1080 vs previous generation, both at stock and against other custom board cards. Thought i'd put a couple of graphs together, made me realize what a jump the 1080 could be if these leaked benchmarks turn out true. While i know some/many will OC their 980s or 980Tis beyond what say Zotac could give in a high factory OC, it's interesting to see much of a gap there could be, providing they're also able to release 2.1ghz clocked factory OC cards.

The follow graphis show:

  • Performance of 1080 against previous generations at stock settings
  • Performance of 1080 against stock and high performing (OC'd) custom cards in previous generations.
  • Performance increase (Percentage) 1080 Stock and 1080 2.1ghz against both stock and custom cards of 980 generation.

I'd agree. I've had 2 4k panels. One with and one without G-sync. While 4k is nice I just couldnt get on with the 60hz. After I tried the swift I sold both my 4k panels soon after. Being the majority of the games I play are FPS games.

I would agree for single player games though. 99% i'll play with a controller. I can set the game to 85hz and its butter smooth next to no difference to 144hz.

4k 144hz can't wait for that :).

Yeah definitely. 2160p is where it's at. Especially if online fps is not your thing.

Not many will fancy messing about with 21:9 :p;)

I can't comment on the 1080 scores but those 980ti scores are a good bit lower than they should be. Makes me question there results.

I'm a little skeptical. 1080 at 2.1ghz beats 980Ti SLI. Even with a decent overclock.

I can just about manage 26600 at 1510mhz on each card with my 5930k at 4.7ghz. I'd sure love it to be true. But i dunno.

So it seems that the 1080 is about 20% ahead of 7970xf in Firestrike Extreme. Which is very good for a single card solution. I think however waiting for the full fat Nvidia or AMD cards might be a better bet for me.
