Thanks......but no thanks.

And that's just off the box alone :p

You are correct to an extent, but as that price point for new shiny keeps moving northwards, and the value of the older components they are using continues to fall (i.e less resale value), that price gap becomes a chasm and most people are left simply unable or unwilling to purchase at the top end, instead having no choice but to go somewhere in the middle, or look at the second-hand market. You theory only holds if prices for new tech stay relatively steady, but as mentioned they are rising exponentially, way above rate of inflation, and with each generation we are seeing massive increases that are not remotely justified, other than to further cushion Nvidia's (and retailers) bottom line.

Actually, prices for the top end card has been around $700 for the last 16 years.
The GF2ultra was $700 in today money when released in 2000.

TBF it's probably £40 over the price it should be when looking at the US price.

I'll still get one. :/

Maybe we should buy GPUs like we buy phones and just get a contract.
£25 a month and a new (top mid-range :P) GPU every 2 years. (£45 a month for the people that have to have the latest version as it appears)

Yea I agree with what you're saying, prices are definitely inflating. Do you think that there's a possibility that their '80 cards are moving in the direction of their enthusiast level card? Maybe they won't release a Titan this gen, and until the Ti comes out - who knows when - this is the pinnacle. If that's the case it could explain the disproportionate price hike as the '80 range becomes its flagship and not just 'high-end'. Again, just a thought, no certainty if this is what's actually happening.

All it takes is for a month or two of GBP strengthening giving us a little over 1.5 dollars to the pound and we'd be where you'd like it.

I just ordered some more stuff from the US, XE rate was 1.44, but my bank put the transaction through at 1.395 :(

I remember buying stuff many many years ago and getting over two dollars to the pound, how I wish those times would return.

Of course, no argument there, it's the fastest card you can (or will soon be able to) buy... but that doesn't change it's position in the overall line-up. It's like calling a Golf GTI the top of the range car VW make and inflating the price accordingly, when there's an R due out in 6 months, which then justifies charging even more for that. Before you know it, you're paying 20-30% more for the equivalent product, WAY BEYOND and above rate of inflation. What Nvidia are doing here is so transparent, and it's a license to print money. The 1080Ti will now easily hit £800, then when the HBM2 cards land, they'll be £1K. It never ends, at every turn we get less for more, and yet we THANK them for it. We live in a MAD MAD world!

Wrong, the too end GPU has always sold at around $700 when factoring inflation. Card values are equal or actually slightly less than historic standards. The 8800 was $800 on release at today's rates.

Why do people find this basic fact so hard to believe? Why keep spreading FUD about prices?

another card from Gigabyte

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 XTREME GAMING Edition

Complete with extreme coil whine if their last 980ti g1 effort is anything to go by.

Considering those cost around £60 iirc why not just buy a £60 more expensive model with a decent tri fan cooler and keep your warranty and save hassle.

Also save yourself risk of damage during installation and avoid warranty issues. For the most part third party coolers while often better are bigger and a hassle.

It also does seem the 1080 is going to be a completely different card with a huge 3rd party heatsink with proper fans and a reference card with a **** blower fan.

Thinking about it, considering the truly ridiculous cost if they've released a 'founders day' edition that had a AIO cooler, it would go at least part of the way to explaining an extra cost(not that much though) and would cool that thing at max clocks with very low noise.

Those were the days. I got my 1900xtx from here at £350. Great card at a great price. This could have before that strong phase as the 4870 launch was also great bang for buck.

I bought about 5 guitars from America ...Good times....

When the ti version comes out for £700 I'll have to laugh as the same people try and justify it by saying 'but it's faster than the last one' :p

You really couldn't make this stuff up.

Isn't everybody forgetting about the fact we have poor exchange rates atm?

The fact is, with the exception of the titanx, Nvidia has pretty much charged the same rate for about 20 years for their current fastest card.

I expect the 1080ti will be launched with the same sales price as the 1080 is now and the 1080 will drop down a little.

The 1080 isn't the top card, the top cards will be the Ti and Titans. Maybe the problem is that nvidia said 3rd party should start at $599 and so far we're seeing prices MUCH higher than that. It won't affect me as much as it's the 1070 i'm interested in but even then i won't buy until the sale price matches what nvidia said it would cost.
