Wow, Nvidia's own people saying that third party cards with better coolers and overclocked are more expensive than the reference cards.... but but, that doesn't happen right.

Hardocp editorial on the paper launch

I'd not be so quick to believe the 'harmless' nature of Nvidia's move here. Does anyone HONESTLY think they didn't realise by hiking the price of a standard (non OC'd) reference card, that it wasn't going to give AIB's permission to hike their cards even higher?? $699 is now the base... OK, it's a nice card, well put together with some quality components, but it still performs as stock, nothing amazing. HOW ON EARTH is an AIB not going to seize the opportunity here to charge MORE for a card that runs QUIETER, COOLER and FASTER with better OC capability???! Won't happen. The ONLY cards at the $599 point will be cheap-o brands which do actually run worse than the FE with crappy blower coolers, or junk fans and no OC ability. The moment an AIB puts another power connector on there, goodbye $599, hello $699 and beyond!!![]()
I don't at all get the fuss about the overclocking, that article just seems to confirm that the GPU was not cherry picked. They hadn't even intended to overclock the GPU but did so to help Epics' new showpiece and were surprised how well it clocks. Bingo, non-cheery picked card hit 2.1 on air.
we've since sen plenty of other review hit 2.1, with the limiting factors being a weak fan curve that is not sufficient and then power problems when you sort out the cooling. It all sounds very promising for water-cooled 2.4Ghz custom cards with an extra 8pin for power.
EDIT: also don't get where he is coming form in regards to the FE. AFAIK, there was never going to be any cards available before the 27th, NVidia hasn't delayed the FE launch. the FE and AIB cards will be on sale on the same day. So it is not an early adopters tax, because you were never going to get them early.
If people played the game properly and got full value and use from their cards, then upgrading would be a much bigger jump. Instead of folks who bought a 980ti 3 weeks ago, whining they don't want to pay £600 for a 1080, why don't you get full value from your purchase and instead buy a 1180ti in a couple of years, the money will be about the same but instead of 15-20% performance+ you'll probably be looking at 75-100% performance+.
It's only because as a modern society people are so damned impatient and must have everything right now that we have all these whining, over inflated ideas of self importance. Every market is exactly the same now, people used to buy something, use it for a few years and then buy a new one when things has come on a fair amount, now folks want something new and better every day of the week, it's ****ing pathetic.
I'm hearing the Flounder's cards have better quality components? Which components?

They mentioned something about low profile components, makes the card thinner. Seems a little pointless now that dual SLI is the most they recommend but i suppose it helps if you're into m-atx type things.
Pretty sure he's a lot more clued in than "random net guy" about the ins and outs that's going on as he attends these launches and has done for over 16 years now.
Are you trying to say that Nvidia, the masters of marketing and product launches got really lucky while trying to help ID Software out by overclocking the card on the spur of the moment at a launch and miraculouly finding that the card chosen randomly was a great overclocker?
Please stop it my sides are aching with laughter.![]()
Not really and loads of people (well a couple here that I know of) are taking what Jen Hsun said out of context and he was saying 2 x the performance in VR. Not that it really matters though, as like I said earlier, people will look to whatever they can to make something look bad when they either A) - can't afford it, B) - No interest and just want to make something look bad for self pleasure or C) - Being really thick and not understanding it.
They're not ripping anyone off. Gcards not a necessity like electric, fuel. Don't like don't buy but you want to hence the whinging over pricing
