what happens if there is a Pro-EU party

and they win the GE ?

I would have thought that was obvious.

we still live in a democracy if a party campaigns stating they want us back in the EU and win they hold another referendum and if the people vote to re enter the EU then we go back cap in hand and ..

despite all the posturing the EU would have course take us back in.

Why on earth would they have a general election and potentially lose power?
Assuming the cons get over their in fighting, there will be no election this side of 2020.
Be madness otherwise.

They have a divided party in the house of commons, no new leader until October, a slim majority of the populace were for brexit and the mandate to govern for the cons was similarly slim. I have literally no idea what will happen in the next few years.

Agree though it would be madness for them to trigger the GE election soon.

Another interesting comment from elsewhere:

"Boris never wanted to leave, he wanted to lose but come out with an energized party with fresh eurosceptic members who would back him for the leadership and thus the premiership. Then he could say, "it was a once in a lifetime chance, such a shame we can't have another vote, let's just muddle on and negotiate with them for Blighty."

The only happy one is Farage and he's a **** fruitcake"

What would be even funnier is if Juncker was still around then. Oh the rage! :D

well considering BJ is the only real option for new PM
<unfortunate initials btw !)
do you think BJ can unite the country ? don't get me wrong I thought BJ was a superb major for London
can he unite the country though ?
He's likeable (Even to non conservatives) but like you I doubt him as a leader for the country. Not stable enough and lacks the power the PM needs

I'm still not sure how a Pro-Brexit Conservatives leader and PM - lets say BJ

will lead a Conservative party that is in the majority Pro-EU ?

how does that work exactly ?

No one knows. Yet another conundrum no one knows the answer too.

Lets face it, absolutely no one knows how this is all going to play out.

If there is in fact a general election, what stops people voting for a party who promise to keep us in the EU?

Nothing stopping them at all. However that is ignoring the referendum result. The best party is the one that captures both sides and then goes to the EU. I think this will water down the pure leave and the pure remain but this is a good thing in the end will lead to a good deal for the UK and EU.

I dunno, I've heard rumours (can't find the damn link though) that the EU are simply going to assume Article 50 as invoked at the Summit next week.

Nate
It's about the potential for the Article 50 requiring notification possibly being no more than mentioning it to an EU official rather than in writing as many believed. If so then Cameron merely mentioning it whilst there would signify the start of the process as it's unlikely to not be mentioned.
It's all about how it's interpreted though as Article 50 isn't that clear (after all, I don't think anyone believed it would ever be used). However the EU will want it started sooner rather than later and have said October is too far away for them. Expect lawyers to be arguing over it for a while.

Tbf, they can hide behind the fixed parliaments act as long as needed till 2020. And other than the EU question, they can pretty much get away with parking all other contentious legislation till then, and do little in this term. Never really killed a government before.

Leeds, York and Harrogate all voted in and are all in Yorkshire

Yep. Remain won in Leeds by a .3% majority, Harrogate by 1% and York by 8%.

Leave won in Skipton, Richmondshire, Scarborough, Ryedale, North East Lincolnshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Barnsley, Doncaster, Hull, Bradford, Hambleton, North Lincolnshire, Rotherham, Wakefield, Calderdale, Kirklees and Selby.

What was your point?

I do not think we will find the conservatives as divided as people think, now there is a leave vote, the remain folks will just suck it up and get on with the job, they will pick a leader, consolidate, and move forward to p,anning how they can win the 2020 election given the mess that will occur between now and then, two years to exit, but they will look at it as three and half years to give the impression they are making the place look a bit better. Blaming of course the labour voters in the north, and punishing thme by not refunding the euro stuff they used to get.

Lets face it, now they can spend the alleged savings themselves, they wont be wasting it in labour heartlands.
