** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

If he does a lot of typing he will love the blues, if the clicking noise is going to bother him you could look at some o ring dampers to lessen the noise.

Well, it arrived today. As it came in just a brown box, I couldn't resist opening it up and just having a quick play before I stuck it in my room to wrap it up. The blues felt great for typing, as you say, I'm sure he'll enjoy it... hell, I'm a bit jealous! I'll let him know about the dampers if he pipes up about noise, although they didn't seem too loud.

It's a usb keyboard so it's not "full" n-key rollover. It will be restricted to 6 keys including modifiers.

Apparently not http://www.corporate.qpad.se/modules/news/article.php?storyid=248

The QPAD MK-85 is the world's first mechanical keyboard offering full N-key roll over via USB. Since the PS/2 connector is being phased out and several manufacturers of computers and motherboards do not offer this option, many gamers are left with no way of utilizing the benefit of the full roll over feature, because their gaming rig does not support that type of connection. With the MK-85, this will not be a problem

I'll wait for proof, I still don't think they will be able to utilize more than 6 keys simultaneously. ;)

I wish there was a useful (but functionally useless) MX tester pad you could buy which had several clusters of keys each with different switch types, so you could physically get your hands on blues/blacks/browns/reds etc and see what you liked the feel of best.

There is a guy on some keyboard website (not geekhack) that sells a bag full of different cherry keys, can't remember the site though.

Trying it is better. I went to pcworld today and they had a steel series 6gv2 (cherry black) and I liked it. It wasn't as stiff as people were making out... Anyhoo I've already ordered a ducky shine blue led with cherry browns. Hopefully it will actually come...

The main reason for a limiting on KRO for USB is because most keyboards use the standard MS HID driver, this has lots of restrictions but makes 99% of keyboards compatible. What QPAD, Corsair and MS themselves do, is to write a new driver that supersedes the Windows driver and allows more throughput, delivering 20+ KRO.

Has anyone learned to touch type on a mechanical keyboard? Over the years I have learnt to type in my own manner, it is nowhere near touch typing, but I can type at an average speed without looking at the keyboard.

I have been trying to learn to touch type in the last few weeks and am finding that the MX Brown switches are so easy to press compared to a normal keyboard that at times I am struggling because the keys are so easy to press. On the other hand, I can see that once I get used to the sensitivity it will be nice to not have to push too hard.

I am also struggling with some of the less used keys like Q, P, Z and X. The rest seem to be fine most of the time but these ones do cause me problems, especially P as it seems to be the most common of the lot. Anyone got any tips.

I touch type on a mechanical board just fine. Lower activation force switches like Cherry MX Browns and Reds require less force than almost all rubber dome keyboards ...and they will maintain this for a long time as they wont wear like rubber domes.

Been looking into a new keyboard for a while and noticed this thread. I'm a sucker for seriously good quality components and build quality but want something for gaming, with typing out essays etc as a secondary consideration. Due to that, which out of the mechanical keyboards OcUK sell would you guys recommend for me? I don't want something that is very loud to type on and would prefer a backlight + PS2 connector to stop polling if possible.

Price range isn't an issue :)

Thanks in advance!

They are seriously nice, its just getting used tot he click i have the cherry blues so they are a bit loud but i dont type too much anyway, great for gaming although i havent tried reds

You limit your options there, the noise aspect takes out blues, but i also would say blacks and reds are not the optimal switch for typing. The brows are probably your best bet, so you can go with the ZOWIE Celeritas, everything but the backlight, or the MK-85, though that has a USB(with NKRO).

Well I'd like to give OcUK my business as usual as I trust their customer service vastly more than their competitors. Is there a product perfect for me then which OcUK doesn't sell? I can always request on here for them to start stocking them if so! I'm in no rush anyway :)
