The official Philips BDM4065UC thread

yeah but for the philips it gives you the option to use two, user defined mode or a smart uniformity mode. which one did you use?

Also at the edges the screen is evidently black, is this normal?

I use Smart Uniformity along with tftcentral.co.uk calibrated profile. That profile has made a big difference in my life. This monitor is really nice; and like everyone says, the blacks are black with no light bleeding.

I'm using the TFT "User defined" profile.

I am not a visual-wiz so couldn't tell you what any of it does but it looks good! Didn't see much difference between the two.

My other settings are
Brightness 82
Contract 60
Sharpness 50

No smart image

I also run f.lux to take away the blue tint to further rest the eyes so the brightness above might be too much for some.

Have to say, 40" sounds ridiculously overkill but two days in ,I have already settled in with it. I was having such difficulty getting into games before but the sheer immersion this monitor provides is fantastic. Even coming from a good IPS panel - you can really appreciate the dark tones. Its like I've never seen black before.

I use Smart Uniformity along with an ICC profile from TftCentral.co.uk. ITfT Central did a review on this monitor and calibrated it using hardware, software. I find the colors are richer using this profile. I'm really enjoying this monitor.

Sounds like you're so used to seeing light peeping from around the edges of your old monitors, that seeing no light is unusual. If you don't see any light peeping around your edges, it's ok! I like it. My Dell U3014, which is a 30 incher and $1100, had light peeping around the edge. Also, This monitor's black is much deeper than the Dell.

Im definately loving the screen though, i doubt ill be getting rid of it. whats a good game to try out on it?

Crisis 3, Project Cars, FarCry 3 and 4, is a start from my perspective. There're are a few with 4k. I prefer playing my games at 1920x1080 or HD@ 1440.

Got mine today and I must say it's impressive! Taken a while to get the set-up right but My first trial game of Tomb Raider in 4k ultra mode was very pretty!
I'm a very happy man right now! :D

Witcher 3, looks amazing in 4K, so long as you have the GPU to power it. I'm running 2x 980s SLI and get a good 50-60FPS with everything except nVidia HairWorks on.

Must say now that im getting used to the monitor it looks fantastic

is their a way to make the screen smaller for certain games? for example id prefer to play dota 2 on a 27 inch

Is there a catch with this screen? VA, 40", 4k monitor for ~£600. Seems too good to be true, and far better value imo than the 1440p 21:9 widescreens (most of which are more expensive).
If you think this monitor is a joke, you should read through this thread and definitely read this review>> http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/philips_bdm4065uc.htm

I have one and can say this isn't a joke of a monitor.
4k monitors are becoming common.

Converted a friend of mine yesterday.. Came by and finally saw this beast monitor in person and it was hilarious... Literally watched his mouth just hang open for a second Haaahahaha. I showed him witcher 3 and he couldn't believe how clear it was. He's a bf4 whore and said the only thing holding him back is how it handles that game. So popped that on and let him play... Needless to say he's ordering one :) Good thing I can use all my rigs horsepower in that game. Smooth as butter. He currently has a 144hz screen and said the response felt great on my 4k.

He said he couldn't imagine gaming on anything bigger than 27" until now. Woooot!

Yeah I have to say it's a real pleasure for casual gaming!
I haven't tried any, what some would call, competitive online gaming as yet but that's because I'm having so much fun playing through Tomb Raider and Arkham Knight in massive sized 4k resolution...
It's a sight to behold! ;)
Now time to boot GTAV...

Monitor looks good for the money. Couple of questions fired owners, how reflective is the screen?
And how well does it scale at lower resolution when playing games (eg if the GPU cannot copies with 4k)?
Presumably it has a hardware scaler?

I don't find it too reflective myself!
Come to think of it, I've actually never once thought... oh damn... screen reflection...

Just been driving round in GTAV from night to day and it looks stunning! Took a yacht for a spin around the coastline and the 4k at high settings is absolutely beautiful.

Can't really say on the lower scale resolution, as I'm running a Titan X and it's 4k-ing the heck out of everything nae bother!
To be honest... I don't know why anyone would buy a 4k monitor if they don't have the GPU juice to run it???

^^ For Ultrawide screen and screen real estate or eye sight issues :D

I was running this monitor at 2650x1440 for a day or two before my new DP cable arrived so can confirmed it scales well to this size atleast, I also used the AMD CCC option "GPU scaler" which seemed to work OK.

As for other resolutions I run a custom size with Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) of 3840 x 1607 and 3840 x1440 which works very well - am using these for FPS and certain RPG's for the wide view aswell as for games my soon to retire 7970 GHz cannot cope with.

Screen reflection I only notice on loading screens in the day time when the majority of the screen is pitch black, otherwise I think it helps give the colours a vibrant look. Prefer it over my matte ASUS.

Upgrades, I tend to upgrade my GPU every 18 months but a decent monitor will be kept for 10 years or until it got pop and isn't repairable. I'm happy to throw money at a monitor now and have the option of 4K desktop use for video editing etc but also want to game as slightly slower resolutions if my GPU (980) can't quite keep up until it's put in SLI or upgraded later.

Plenty of reasons for grabbing a 4K just now to be fair, forward planning like I've mentioned is probably the main reason for those of us on GPUs which only just squeeze into the 4K gaming category.

This looks like a great monitor. I was originally considering going for a freesync / AMD GPU combo but if I go for this I can maybe choose a 980ti instead (not considering gsync due to cost factor).

Only problem is the dilemma I'm in. I've never experienced 4K or high fps gaming (120 fps or 144fps for example), so I'm not sure what is the best option! 60fps 4k or 1440p freesync (higher fps). Anyway, I'm sure either option will be better than 1080p tn gaming! And breathe. :)
