The official Philips BDM4065UC thread

Hnngggggg....so...much....real estate!! :D

The base of the monitor that protrudes backwards worries me a bit as to how effective wall mounting will be for the purpose getting the screen as close to the wall as possible.

I'm wondering if it will end up being just as far away from the wall as if the base was pushed all the way up against the wall.

I posted some of the below in another forum, and I've now had this monitor for a few days:

I have this monitor now (UK), here are my initial observations (in no particular order):

1. The screen is semi-gloss. It's definitely less matte than other screens, and the Benq 32" panel I've been using for the last few days. No hint of AG problems for sure.

2. Height from desk to the underside of the monitor is just under 3"

3. Blacks are inky, gaming @ 4k in Elite Dangerous is simply stunning.

4. The top of the monitor is too high for desktop work using the supplied stand. I plan to buy a desk stand and drop it to desk height - this will be perfect. (I've bought an Ergotron stand which I plan to try tonight).

5. Very surprised to find 1440p scaling works well (very limited testing so far) - but Arma III and Crysis 3 are very playable with no obvious issues. This has made me quite excited as I have best of both worlds, especially for games which aren't SLI friendly (I run SLI 970s).

6. Input lag. I can't measure this, but I can say that again, from my limited testing, this isn't severe. BF4 very playable, and so long as 60fps is constant there's no issue. Certainly, I think it's slightly less than the 32" VA panels which are out there (Acer/Benq/Samsung).

7. Motion blur. It's there, for sure, slightly more noticeable than on the Benq. On the Blur Busters scrolling text test, the "Alice in Wonderland" text in bold has very noticeable trails. The remaining text looks similar to other displays I've seen/used.

8. OSD. Terrible. I hate the little joystick on the back. Give me buttons for inputs and other settings rather than forcing you to remember which way to push the joystick each time. Ultimately it's not really a big deal as personally I don't go into the OSD often, but it's still annoying.

My testing hasn't been comprehensive so far and right now I'm pretty much wow'd by the panel. So the caveats: I'm no competitive gamer, and if you are then this isn't going to be for you full stop - stick to your ROG Swift. I can tell there is lag, especially in something like CS:Source, but for me it's not a deal breaker and this unqualified eye doesn't think it's bad enough to be a problem (for me).

9. The VA "cone" effect. Sitting in a completely dark room from 3' away, the corners are clearly uneven and if you didn't know better, you'd say it was a backlight issue. Moving your head so the corner is on-axis eliminates the problem, which means this is an issue with viewing angles (VA cone effect?). It's not that things become difficult to read or see, but the blacks turn to a slight grey.

Let me say now that under normal conditions the blacks look inky black, and the issue isn't like the horrendous 34" superwide problems out there. But it's definitely noticeable in a dark room with a backlight bleed test running.

For me? Well I've been through a host of monitors, Dell U2713HM, U2412M, Qnix 2710, BenQ 3200PLT, various TN ones and none of them hold a candle to this. It's not perfect, but it's the closest I've seen for a multi-purpose monitor. 4k, 40" and under £700 to boot? I'm happy so far....

PS If connecting via displayport this runs 1.1 by default - so make sure you change it in the menus to achieve 60hz (yes, it took me a few minutes to work out during which time I thought "omg this is awful" just from moving a mouse around the screen! )

So one of my comments above relates to the height of this on its stand. Today I took delivery of an Ergotron Neoflex Widescreen stand and a 200mm vesa adaptor.

The stand works perfectly with the monitor, and with it almost flush to the desk the top of the monitor is within a couple of inches to eye level. It's much more comfortable to use and it looks fantastic. In a word, if you get one of these ditch the horrible Philips stand!

Wow, this is an interesting development! I have a couple of questions...

How is it for colour reproduction?
I use a Dell 2709 27" at the moment and colour calibrate it so my screen can match my printer. It produces great accurate colours and is a PVA display. I believe (from what I've read) that PVA is better than PA, but then it's also five years old so I'm sure technology has moved on!

How is the quality when it's not displaying at it's native UHD resolution?
I would use this for video and photo editing at full UHD setting but then may drop it down for standard work such as emails or gaming (no way my Geforce 670 could do 4K gaming!).
A lot of monitors can't handle non-native resolutions and go fuzzy etc., how does this fare at lower resolutions?

Thanks. :)

Thanks for all the info people...
Just looking at those photos looks surprisingly small, not much more imposing than current U3011.

Defo sold, thanks for taking the time to post your views Smurfin.

Right, that's it. I can't take it any longer. I've been putting off buying a new monitor since June when I heard about the ultrawides. Time to take the plunge.

Ordered :D

Praise the gods...or some nonsense like that.

My "Temporarily unavailable" chance order placed a week or so ago has miraculously changed to expected delivery 12-13 December on a certain leafy establishment.

Sorry to gloat :)
I'm just so happy in self indulgent materialistic way.

I'm seriously thinking this is the upgrade monitor I've been waiting for.

I appreciate all the feedback by people who have bought, but I'd like to see more more comprehensive testing by reviewers though.

I'm in the same boat as you caff...in the end the way I justified it is I've got a ton of work to do over the Christmas holidays and hopefully the increase in productivity that this will bring will be worth it.

Provided I don't just use it to browse reddit for 12 hours a day at a silly resolution....:o

1. The screen is semi-gloss. It's definitely less matte than other screens, and the Benq 32" panel I've been using for the last few days. No hint of AG problems for sure.

So you own the BenQ 32" 4K monitor as well and this Phillips 40" 4k? The Phillips is more glossy? How much? I'm on the quest to find a 32"+ 4k non-TN monitor that has the most gloss regardless of the size, response time, price ect.

The new Samsung 32" 4k is full matte. It looks like the Acer 32" 4k is a matte as well but need clarification. It seems like the BenQ 32" 4k is a semi-gloss as well as this 40" 4k Phillips. I think the only other monitor in this category on the horizon is the new 32" 4k Asus ProArt monitor but that appears to be a matte as well.

I've been using a glossy 27" Apple Cinema Display for like 5+ years and I can't stand matte but it looks like I'll need to sacrifice to semi-glossy if I ever want a 4K monitor anytime soon. If you can post more photos showing both of their glossyness/reflectiveness I would appreciate it. Thank you.

If you're comparing it to that sort of display, you'll never get a match unless you go for another glass-fronted display. I've been using glass fronted 27" monitors that use the same IPS panel that's in your ACD, so I know exactly what you're looking for and you won't get the same.

As much as I like glass fronted displays though, I do find the reflections a bit too much at times. Even a full glossy panel is a lot less reflective than the glass cinema display. From all the images I've seen, the Philips monitor is just a bit less than a fully glossy display, or rather one without an antiglare coating, like 80% or so.

Saying that though, you'll never actually get a full matte coating, they're all levels of semi gloss until you get up to no antiglare.

But the less reflectivity is something I'm looking forward to, because in some situations the monitors are almost mirrors, as I'm sure you'll know.
