Thanks, I think I had the older version of that without the optical in. I guess one argument for the Astro is that it gives the option, you don't HAVE to have the Dolby surround emulation on. I think I'll try get a second hand one but also have a pure DAC/AMP as well.
It does not but this is done by the device, like your Astro Mixamp or alternative.
what would be interesting to see is if the astro mixamp using surround emulation (digital trickery) is better than a clean stereo sound on the fiio setup.
imo the fiio will hands down in a stereo vs stereo scenario.
will it win in a stereo vs emulated surround is anyones guess imo the quality of the fiio should be so with your choice of headphones that you can make out a difference between which is better.
pinpointing footsteps is all about how clear the sound is imo, as the footsteps get closer they should be getting louder, etc, etc. i think the way the game actually produces sounds will have a huge impact on this as well as what you choose. games which are coded poorly may result in the astro setup being superior, games coded correctly may result in the fiio setup being superior.
