Does Microsoft not have any plans to release a competitor to the Pro? You'd think this was a perfect opportunity to trump Sony. The PS4 Pro moved me to Sony from the Xbox One back in the day, no issues going the other way :p

MS said last year they wasnt going to releasing a half step console.

Microsoft have more concerning issues to address than pumping out another console with no games.

Lets not pretend Sony doesnt either as of last week. :D

I mean - there are plenty of pages in this very thread with people saying it is aimed at them potentially.
It is aimed at the 15 - 20% of people who demand the very best from their gaming setup. This device has not been released to be a replacement for the PS5. All 56m PS5's will continue working. All the future bought PS5's will continue working and will get every single game released this generation.
In the same way most Samsung user's don't buy a Galaxy Ultra. Most Google users don't buy a Pixel Pro. Most Apple users don't buy an iPhone MAX.

If you cannot afford it or feel the price-tag is too high then.....it simply wasn't aimed at you.
Don't buy it. The world will continue.

But I can guarantee you plenty will. When it goes on pre-sale on the 23rd, all the units will be snapped up. Those people who buy will be happy with the enhancements it gives them.
For me - if I was buying I'd consider this the PS5.5 and wouldn't look to buy a PS6 at release.
If the PS5 release has shown us something, it has been under-utilised for the main and games have continued to be released for the PS4. So a PS5 Pro now would allow you to play the rest of this generations games with the very best possible fidelity/frame setup and would almost certainly play the first 2-3 years of PS6 releases far closer to how the PS6 can than the base PS5 will.

However, for me it's a principle thing and the price-tag is too high. If it had been £700 with the optical drive I'd have seriously considered.
But it doesn't stop me from seeing that plenty of people are going to buy. No it won't be the end of Sony, no it won't bomb.

Well for starters the PS4 Pro only accounted for 12% of total PS4 sales and that only cost £350 at launch, and even if you adjust for inflation that comes out at £465, and don't forget that came with an optical drive.

I'm an enthusiast, I've bought nearly every console from the Atari 2600 era at launch to date, PS4 Pro included, I have a large oled 4k display that I'd love to take advantage of fully with the PS5 Pro using 4k fidelity mode in games, buying the console isn't a financial burden for me, this console is aimed at people like myself, but I won't be buying it on principle due to the cost, and I can guarantee I won't be alone.

Will the Pro console sell through on its first batch, very likely, will the momentum of sales continue?, I doubt it very much.

Also it's now obvious people value FPS over fidelity, this has been confirmed in the PS5 Pro announced from Mark Cerny, most games default to fidelity mode, yet the majority of people are switching to performance mode wanting faster frame rates, so currently the standard PS5 gives you 60fps which imo, and PlayStation users opinion is the most important thing, a minor graphical enhancement on top of that isn't going to push a lot of people to whack out £800 on a new console.

One thing I have noticed from all of the fallout from Sony's badly received presentation is the sheer number of really crappy comparisons for PC vs PS5 Pro costs. And I'm not bashing on PC here as someone with PC and Steam Deck. For example, I just watched someone doing PC part picker using the usual Ryzen 3600, 16GB of crap DDR4, cheap PCI-E 3.0 storage, Nvidia 4070 and cheap case, PSU. But no mentioned of the OS, controller, audio equipment or running costs, i.e. current PS5 is 200w vs. a PC that can be considerably more. Yet everything negative about PS5 Pro, i.e. subscription, higher price games. Again likely bias on the part of the author but most of these pricing comparisons are irrelevant at worst or just badly put together.

Again not to say that going PC isn't the answer, or that you can't have a kick-arse PC that is very on point for your own requirements. But the PS5 Pro is likely beating any £700 'gaming' PC spec wise.

Had some time to reflect on it and work through the obvious outrage, I voted no I wouldn't buy it, but honestly, I'll probably end up getting it, on a few caveats.

One is that I can use my slims optical drive (which I think I can), two is that I can buy it from an eBay store and use my employee 10% discount, and three that I can get £250 or so for my slim (which will then be digital). Net cost to change should be around £380 or so, if all goes to plan and there's no other discounts I can utilise.

I know it's expensive and I'm probably being a mug, but to be honest I get a tonne of use out of my PS5, I barely play anything on PC anymore, I don't have a gaming PC, I like couch gaming, and it's a new shiny object which provides that dopamine hit. I've always been a massive fan of gaming in general and have concerns about the precedent this price sets, and even though I don't have an Xbox, we all need MS to work harder and provide some more competition.

Trouble is by the time it's been tested it'll probably be OOS everywhere.

I believe you can. I was reading last night that the optical drive is unavailable now as everyone either rushed to get one for the Pro, or are going to scalp the drive. It probably was quite a low stock item with limited demand so I think Sony do have real pressure to produce enough of these for annoyed Pro buyers.

I feel the real competition atm is Nintendo and Valve. If the Switch 2 is powerful enough it surely becomes a candidate for more live services like COD etc. And if Valve does decide to push more hardware into the home to grow Steam a console may be more viable than ever (after those DOA Steam machines). It feels like Microsoft and Sony want that platform that is very service based, but still a walled garden and a 'steam' approach to support their multi-format aims. That said I think Sony have so much more to lose chasing PC and live services than Microsoft who are already are a massive third-party publisher/developer, where Xbox is just a smaller piece of the cake.

Do you guys think there was a 1st draft of the Keynote where they had Concord gameplay instead?

And the abandonment of that game with it's loss of projected revenue cost them to hike up the price too.

Haha...No.

I imagine any costs of closing the studio, re-purposing staff to work on something else, or the entire costs associated with development of Concord will be written off as losses to reduce tax.

I think Sony is very aware it only needs a few of the live-services to hit for the entire investment in them to be worthwhile. Either way neither Sony, Microsoft, Valve or other big western publishers are doing anything different. They are all still invested in live services. Unfortunately.

PS5 Disc Drives sold out already in Amazon Spain, just like Amazon UK the other day!

Scalpers gonna scalp hard this time, not content with selling you the scalped console for £1000 they'll charge you £1300 and include the disc drive they scalped this week!

Lol - no.
Please don't tell me you are one of the people who subscribe to the ">70% of PS5's were scalped"
I could buy a PS5 Disc Drive right now, for RRP, from a number of retailers.
They can run those things off a production line like nobodies business - even if your favourite retailer is out of stock now, you think they will remain so until November 7th?

As for the consoles themselves - sure the first batch is going to sell out, but I'd expect a scalp rate lower than the PS5 with restocks coming every 1-2 weeks until everyone who wants one has been satisfied.

PS5 release was different. Covid & global shipping stopped them restocking so quickly, but there was a lot of scalping! I didn't actually get one till they re-appeared in physical shops with plentiful stock in Jan 2022. A lot were scalped prior to that though, especially during the lockdown heavy periods when all orders were online. Maybe 30-50%?
I'm certain that the disc drive sellouts on Amazon(s) are related to the Pro announcement. I'm sure they will restock before Nov 7th, but still!

Maybe it's lots of excited Pro buyers, getting their disc drives early OR scalpers doing the same.

Either way, I am certain we will see:

1) No physical stock in shops without pre-orders or complicated ordering systems till Jan-Feb '25
2) There will be loads of Pros advertised at scalped prices
3) A lot of them will be with a mandatory disc drive :p

Those scalpers are going to be disappointed when they realise the pool of people who will buy this is rather niche within niche.

Console owners are crazy, they will pay scalped prices, thus consoles and handhelds will continue to be scalped on release day till the end of time :). (as will many other consumer electronics products!)
