The Official Prometheus (Alien Prequel) Thread

All these mixed reviews.

:(

OK, in a nutshell, if you think that any of the new Star Wars movies was good cinema, you will like it. If you did enjoy more the type of movie like blade runner, even Gladiator, this will not just be enough.

The 3D is effectively non-existent, this is just a 2D film turned into 3D, there was no design or cinematography in the approach.

I think too many people went in wanting a pure Alien prequel, I didn't and for that I ended up loving everything about this movie.

The 3D was fantastic, it was subtle, not over the top or in your face, was there to add depth and it worked perfectly.

I recently saw a thread at AVPGalaxy which shows the mountain of bad reviews Alien originally got and now it's considered a classic. http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=43799.0

It's going to divide people a lot I think, there are too many expectations but if you go with an open mind and no preconceptions, you'll love it.

Gah, was excited only about this and the new batman film, considering the last films I have seen at the cinema are the dark knight I only go if I think a movie is really worth it. The mixed reviews this is getting...think it might be better to wait for the directors cut. I dont want to risk anything ruining my love for the alien franchise. As much as I would like answers, part of the charm was the mystery and if they arent going to be answered in a good enough way I'll give it a miss.

Go see it, it was very good even with the nitpicking.

Vue down near the Harbour was packed last night at midnight! :D

Hmmm maybe...my friends were talking about seeing it on the tuesday holiday, will decide then :o

We usually go to the cineworld in union sq, not been to the vue.

I will tell you what really gets my goat, cinemas thinking that everyone wants to see every film in bloody 3D, both of my local cinemas (Stratford & Leamington) are only showing it in 3D.

I don't want to watch it in 3D. Give me a normal bloody option.

What also makes my blood boil is that they show the 2D viewing (if they even bother to do that) at one performance a day at a totally **** time.

**** the cinema is what I say.

I notice that cineworld now offers a discount for booking online, which is the way it should always have been in my eyes.

yes they do make a point of saying "no booking fees" and offer 10% off if you join. it's still one big swizz though. the tickets are advertised at £11 and with the discount, it makes it £9.90. i tried to book to one but it wouldn't accept my ***** visa electron card. when i went in to buy one, it was £9.50. so don't believe the **** on the website....

on topic: 40 minutes until i go. :D

The cinema I was in messed up the 3D at the start. Was totally out of focus for the first five minutes. People were quite angry about it.

From where I was sitting the 3D hardly made a difference.

I'd like to say I'm surprised by how poor it was but I'm not. Damon Lindelof is a poor writer, and this film exposed every single one of his weaknesses. From weak characterisation to plot holes, clunky exposition to vain attempts to make you care about characters you really don't have any reason to care about. It was just shoddy writing. We're talking Star Wars style writing here.

Particularly the Guy Pearce = father bit. The smell of ham there was overwhelming. Also the bit where Holloway got infected and we suddenly got a weird scene about how Shaw was barren; I could hear Lindelof crowbarring all that thing in all the way from his mansion in Hollywood. Atrocious.

The lack of suspense really bothered me the most though. The score was overbearing, and I dunno why but every scene that was supposed to shock or elicit some kind of reaction from the audience felt wrong and didn't work.

Perhaps more importantly, we're talking about a film by a director who has only really made 4 great movies out of 29. Everything else he's done is either average or just plain poor. This is definitely not a good film. Just an average one.

It did look fantastic though.

^Yeah I saw an interview with Damon on The Verge and the description of his writing process did not fill me up with confidence at all. I still want to see it but its a matter of convincing the gf. Think Ill have to take her to something she wants to see first lol

Want to watch it 2D, don't like motion in 3D and cinema jacked up prices recently

hmmm, the £40 for 2 tickets at the Imax is looking like a poor bet now with all these reviews.... <sigh>

ah well, its a night out, we'll have some popcorn, and its 3D - it wont be so bad

What's interesting for me is that out of our group of 7 who watched it, 3 of them absolutely despise 3D yet all of them said it was fantastic in this movie.

Personally I like 3D for depth and atmosphere, not just for objects flying out of the screen at you.

I went to see it last night.

Well, where to start. I think the only thing I can say is, dont go in expecting a prequel to Alien......although, thats exactly what it is. Now that Ive seen it and the whole thing about 'its not a prequel to Alien' IMO is bull poo, it blatently is. The downside is, its not a patch on Alien, infact I went in with great expectations and unfortunately to say it, for me, it didnt live up to it.

Especially the ending, I wont say what happens, but it gets a big big boooooooooo from me.

Ive got questions: To anyone that has seen it...
1. Where did the swimming snake alien thing that got into the guys suit come from? Massive plot hole, they didnt explain it.

2. The 'humanoid' dude at the very start, whats the relevance of drinking a cup of goo and then dying into the waterfall.....again, no explanation.

3. The big pile of dead humanoids found by the two guys that got left behind in the temple during the storm. How did they get there? Who killed them? Again, no explanation.

4. And just what was the black goo stuff they found, why was it there, who created it. Againnnnnnn, no flippin explanation.

It goes on, so many holes and the whole thing just felt really 'disjointed'.

My interpretations of what happened:
1) David took a sample and the goo came out. Not sure whether it was deliberately released or not.
2) He seeded earth with DNA.
3) I think they were trying to escape when something went wrong with the bio-engineering they were doing, and it got out of control.
4) The engineers created it to seed their DNA.

Here's my take on those, some the same as above, some not:

1. The snake is the infected/morphed form of the mealworms that are seen in the room with the giant head, when they leave this room they are being covered in the black slime.

2. Not entirely sure but I guess that's earth and he metamorphosis's into early humans.

3. It's not explained, but you are supposed to think that they were chased and killed / infected.

4. It's a weapon that transforms the infected's DNA into murderous monsters.....zombie apocalypse weapon if you will but it has different effects depending on the species.

I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

My impressions:

1. When they first entered that room with the huge face and pots standing around, there were already worms in the ground. It was said by the characters at that time that their entrance and breathing seemed to cause an effect on the room and the "pots" aswell as the ceiling "painting." It's possible the snake thing "evolved" from the worms due to the same effect they had on the very delicate climate of the room. (We also see these things grow considerably later on in the movie, when she's suddenly pregnant with a 3 month old alien after having only conceived 10 hours earlier.)

2. The guy at the beginning wearing the robe. To me this scene came across more as a ritual, which for such an advanced people, was a little strange but maybe hinted at the importance of the event to those people. The carrying on of their DNA onto a fresh canvas (planet). Was the robe a hint of this? You don't see them wearing it again in the movie.

I don't know, thats the impression I got of it.

3. This I'm not so sure about. I'm not 100% but wasn't it said somewhere that the alien guy at the end, who they woke from stasis, killed his crew/companions? I might be wrong or have misunderstood it. They were all dead by a door, did he lock them out of the ship?

It's also possible something when wrong with the cargo pots and killed them. But yeah, it was confusing.

4. I took the black goo pots as being storage eggs. They carried DNA and biological information as a sort of cargo. It was said by the characters "in order to create, you first need to destroy" or something similar. It might be they took these "biological DNA pots" to different planets (which they did judging by their big star map) and planted these eggs for some reason.

It did leave a lot of questions unanswered. For me the big one was why the big alien guys were so hell bent on destruction. Where they poisoned by their own meddling? Did it make them turn bad? Was the human race (and we can assume other species on other planets) an experiment that they wanted to wipe clean and start again?

Lots of questions left unanswered but it was still a bloody good movie :)

So excited to go watch it, walked out feeling like I'd been slapped in the face :(

Not really anything special as a standalone film and no where near my expected Alien prequel quality..
