I really enjoyed it too.. Fair enough there are some plot holes but there are in most films. The 3D was really well done and looked impressive and I'm not a big fan of 3D usually! Even the girl I went with who hates sci-fi enjoyed it and said it was good.. apart from the surgery scene!
Just saw at, and... well... middle of the road, really.
The plot holes are doing my head in the more I think about it, and the film just blatantly refused to give answers where they were needed. I don't need characters to literally spout all of the information on-screen, but at least deliver what's needed in a visual sense to fully form coherence. Lindelof's after a new franchise here, big time, and it shows painfully.
Worst of all, I could dig it when Scott et al were saying that it wasn't "really" an Alien prequel etc. etc., but what we've ultimately got is a prequel to Alien that doesn't want to be a prequel to Alien. That side of it is just plain half-cocked and leads to the distinct lack of cohesion throughout -- it should have been all or nothing. Hell, even nothing with just one big, tasty, bite that really gave franchise fans what they wanted... but no, they tried to get all "big boy" about it and dropped the ball.
That said, I was entertained enough throughout. Idris Elba was consistently great, and Michael Fassbender was simply fantastic.
You know that feeling you had when after Matrix you watched the sequels? Or when Lucas released prequels to Star Wars? The feeling that there is no way on Gods green earth the same people actually made the original films, let alone tried to understand the story? That's how Prometheus feels. People who watched Alien trilogy 5 years ago on ITV, with commercial breaks, while reading overclockers forum with one eye, will enjoy Prometeus. But in Alien universe, this film is a headache inducing plothole on plothole mad ride with more WTF's than "Lost" the tv series ending.
Just got back in from the cinema and I have to unload on here because that was the biggest pile of ******* **** waste of ******* money!
It was horrific! Horrible! Horrendous! I do not think it had a single redeeming feature it was that bad! I can honestly say I have never watched a worse film in my life in the last few years it was that bad!
It was sooooo bad there is little point in deconstructing it peice by peice but I feel I need to mention some points.
DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM!
1. Random star map. Why? What is the purpose of it? Why lure them there? POINTLESS!!!!
2. A biologist, a biologist of all people goes up to an animal which has reared up to you, is hissing in your face and says it is no threat? Really?! REALLY?!?!?!?
3. So its apparently a world where they are making a weapon. Why are they making the weapon? What went wrong for them to need to escape? Why were the running toward a room where the weapon was stored when they died? What happened to all the others who ran into the room before it closed? What happened to the aliens that burst out the chest of those trying to escape? (stupid bio and geo discuss the chest bursting on the pile of bodies before they get got)
4. Why poison the scientists to emplant an alien when they do not even know what it is? No real reasons are given and thinking around it there is no reason why they should do so.
5. She has the alien thing implanted in her, it gets cut out in an emergency operation and no one seems to give a ******** toss! It is not even mentioned again WTF!!?!?!?!
6. Engineer person going mental and killing everyone? Why? No reason at all. Why does it come after her? No reason given. POINTLESS!
7. Geo guy getting turned into mutant?! Why? If that's what they do why didn't she turn into a mutant thing, ignoring that stupidity they then kill it after opening the doors for no reason and after it butchers half the crew no one gives a toss and it isn't mentioned again!
8. What is the point in mega squid thing? What is it's purpose, where does it come from? Why? What is with the random alien that sprouts from the engineer that looks nothing like an alien? WHYYYYYYY!?!??!!
9. Why does the engineers head randomly explode? WHY!?
10. Why go through the process of seeding a whole planet to test a weapon on them (Which was the impression I think they were trying to give) why go through thousands/millions of years of evolution just to wipe them out.
11. If they exactley matched human DNA why did they look so different?
12. Why? Why make this film? Why?
I honestly can't comprehend how bad this film is. It didn't have plot holes because it plain didn't have a plot. It is like they thought of every theory that people have had behind the alien universe and given each one five minutes film time. Nothing connected, nothing made sense, NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING!!!!!
I was waiting for the epiphany moment when everything would just suddenly make sense and make it a really great film but it never arrived.
A dull turd of a film which is just a series of unconnected set peices which have little to no relevance to one another. Shockingly bad
I wonder if this film would still be getting the same hate if it had just appeared out of the blue and everyone didn't have such massively high expectations for it.
I've been waiting for this for 3 years and for me, it delivered all I wanted, not everything was explained which is fine by me. RS has just done an interview to say if he did do anymore, it would be 2 more movies before we even get to 'Alien'.

Personally, I just went to see it expecting nothing and judging it alone. The film is bad, only saved by a few technical aspects, and that nowadays is not saving grace.
There is no effort put into the cut of the it in order to portrait a coherent story, the number of contradictions together with the poor character development and non existent direction made it hard to watch.
When the stunning Michael Fassbender cannot save your film then you know it has problems.
Once again I reiterate - Ridley Scott: 4 good films out of 29. He's a good director who often gets poor writers. This is just another poorly written Ridley Scott film.

Even if it had nothing to do with Alien it would still be an incoherent mess
I'd also rather he didn't make two more films, it's like watching Lucas slaughter the Star Wars legacy all over again except even more painful because I rate the Alien franchise better than Star Wars. Just leave it alone Ridley don't completely bury the franchise for us all!

Down to personal opinion I guess, Scott has made more than 4 good movies.
Body Of Lies
Matchstick Men
Black Hawk Down
Hannibal
Gladiator
GI Jane
Black Rain
Blade Runner
Alien
I hesitate to add Legend
I'm not going to defend Prometheus, I don't need to, those who don't like it, fair enough, that's their opinion. I got what I wanted, i'm happy, the 3 year wait was worth it.
