am I right in thinking he sacrificed himself in a ritual, to spread DNA on earth and hence give it the building blocks of life
Also compared to other films the 3d was by and large amazing and I think it's down to most of it rather than piping out, in goes into the screen. When things pop out they lose they're solidity and break at the edge of the screen. Whilst going into the screen doesn't seem to have these issues and remains bright and solid looking.

I think so yes. I wondered if it was a sacrifice to create a sanctuary for their species away from danger. This does not explain why they would want to go back and destroy it though. Confused

I guess i was wrong then, i thought the setting was 2000 years before Prometheus landed on that planet (not earth) and that he got infected and therefore left the ship to commit suicide, but at the same time why would he do it at the waterfall where he could infect the water? who knows
Was just about to say that myself actually - because Woody had quoted the "4 good films out of 29" a couple of times. For me - I actually think he made 6 really good movies.
And what woody was also failing to point out - was that there are very few Directors who have 4 good ones, in most of the top 50 movies of all times lists - or more importantly 2 movies in the top 10 movies of all time lists....
There's loads of directors with more than four good films in their career. There are even those who generate great film after great film!
Four good Ridley Scott films:
Alien,
Blade Runner,
Gladiator
and perhaps Black Hawk Down.
Hannibal is totally overwrought, in my opinion. Matchstick Men is close to being good but isn't and everything else is either average, dull or rubbish.
I'm not a big one for sitting and pointing out every hole in a film and try and enjoy them at face value for what they are, but I don't think it is as clear cut as you state.
I'd discuss more, but probably requires the other threads attention rather than in here. (Spoilers).
As I said in the other thread, I'd give this 7/10 overall, which I feel is a bit too generous almost.
The story/dialogue/scripting is probably what let it down the most.
The cinematics, soundtrack and some of the acting probably held it up from being distinctly average and closer to the AvP films in terms of quality.

Please bear in mind i've tracked this film from the first rumours and read virtually everything related to it so i've got a more rounded idea than most about what most of the things relate to in the movie.
I'm a true hardcore alien fan and I soaked up every moment of that movie and accepted as a welcome addition to the Alien universe
The first four from the top of my head, and bare in mind these can't be explained for two very specific reasons:
Why did Holloway just decide to commit suicide at the hands of Vickers? Massive plot hole. It has no explanation because he, y'know, died. Poor screenwriting.
What was up with Fifield? How did he have his face melted off and some how reappeared as a bioweapon with super human strength? This is never commented on, explored and explained. And it can't be explained either. Again, poor screenwriting.
Similarly, Milburn's death at the hands of the penis-snake thing had no repercussions, explanation, ramifications or investigation. What's the point in making the point that the alien vessel was full of bioweapons when only one of them actually serves a plot purpose? Again, just poor screenwriting and a plot hole so big you could drive a double decker bus through it.
Why did Vickers and Shaw run away from the alien ship in a straight line when they could just have, y'know, run away to the left or to the right? Again, just really poor writing.
Oh and the biggest one of the whole film: if Fifield and Milburn were seeded by bioweapons on that ship, and all the other ships on LV-223 have similar purpose, surely Shaw would be killed pretty quickly after entering another ship?
And there's other writing issues:
I swear I could hear Lindelof wielding a crowbar and swinging at the script as he shoehorned in that part about Shaw "not being able to create life". Literally one of the worst motivations for anything I've ever seen in a film. And I've seen The Room.
Why does Janek immediately think that crashing the Prometheus into the alien vessel is the only solution to destroy it? They could have at least explored some other options before jumping right to "Right, I'm gonna kill myself now". I'm not saying that his motivation isn't justified, he does indeed say he'd do anything to stop it from leaving the planet, but it's just a tad hasty to be believable.
These are never explained, nor are they left deliberately ambiguous because they can't be explained in the sequel because not everyone makes it out alive.
There's deliberate threads of mystery in the film, things which are left open, but there are also unexplained elements and plot holes because Lindelof is a horrible writer.

I suppose with that in mind its probable, for someone who hasn't schooled up on what to expect in the film, that there will be many questions still.
There were things that were completley just brushed over or taken at face value which really had no explaination or follow up (unless it is all to come!).

Run left or right? Lol.
Seen how big that ship is, it's laughable either survived, wouldn't matter what direction they ran in. But then it's a film and you have to forgo reality, otherwise most action/shift films would last 5mins at best.

Again, did you see the size of it, if it fell under physics, they would be dead, regardless of what they did.
It's a silly opinion and again, such films have to have fake physics/reality otherwise it would be a rubbish film.
In reality some people would just freeze and the majority woud panic.

I agree with this, I'm all for ambiguity and you having to fill the blanks yourself but that writing was plain poor and just lazy. The worst for me was;
She runs defies David (by not going into stasis) beats the hell out of two other crew members, gets a massive Alien thing cut out of her chest and is then stumbling round covered in blood and messed up with a live Alien left aboard the ship... but then no one see's fit to comment on this? Not the rest of the crew who would be pretty shocked they are trying to kill one of thier own or use them as a transport for an Alien bio-weapon? (captain bloke would be especially ****** at this considering what he has said) David, Weyland, the woman who got battered and the rest don't even mention what has happened nor chase her nor anything else? She doesn't even ******* mention it! As if that sort of thing happens every day!
Th above was the moment that summed up how poorly written, scripted and thought out the whole movie was.

You're missing my point: there are other ways a good writer could put their characters in pearl without resorting to something like a falling ship threatening to crush them.

I don't agree in the slightest. It's like saying an action film is poorly written as 10million shots are fired and no one dies.
It's a film, it's not reality.
