***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

Yeah I'll run it again later. Before the cleanup I did and I was high 70's/mid 70's.

hi Hank
i have a similar setup
Q6600 (B3 version)
Tuniq Tower 120 (fan on full for testing ;))

my temps at 3.3GHz are high 20's idle and mid 70's running intel burn test.

the tjmax should be 100 for a G0 version but
when running realtemp, just keep an eye on the distance to tjmax. never let it go lower than 20 ;) this never changes even if your tjmax is set wrong :)

before running Intel burn test, open task manager and see the amount of free ram.
for example i have 2550mb free ram so in IBT i enter a custom amount of 2500. (just below the free amount)
then i change the threads from auto to 4 (quad core)
now every run i make i always get around 40-42 gflops. (consistent)

wingzero30 explained all this a few pages back ;)

" I would choose 'free' memory as available memory will also make use of cache memory which must be storing data for other applications aswell. Windows may free up some physical memory from the cached memory during testing but not totally and i think the rest will be the virtual memory as a compensation.

Available = Free + (Cached - Modified)"

running just free memory will help you get higher gflops, as its just using free ram and not cached ram
this should also have 4 or 2 cores running at 100% (or how many your cpu has)

this will give you more consistent gflops score, but will also make your temps higher, as more gflops, the more the cpu is stressed

Cheers mate, actually followed that info from another thread you posted in so thanks X 2.

High 20's is very good, think I'll have to re-apply paste.

depends on ambient temps.
my wife likes her heating, today this room must be at least 23.c, and my idle temps are now 30ish ;) with low fan

is your fan on low or high? if its on low, then mid 30's is normal idle temps imo

I increased fsb by 10.

Booted into windows, started the IBT and it crashed. Went back into bios and upped the cpu V one notch, booted in and crashed again.

Would it be related to my ram? It increases with the fsb increase, do it need to set it a ratio? 1:1 etc etc etc to lower it. The Ram is 4 x 1gb ocz ddr2 6400 platinum 4 4 4 15

Cheers

No matter how hard I try, I just can't get my system to boot beyond the login screen even set to 3.0GHz.

The closest I seemed to come was with:

CPU Core: 1.45
CPU FSB: 1.5
Memory: 1.9-2.0
nforce SPP: 1.45
nForce MCP: 1.55
HT SPP<>MCP: 1.4

I pulled these off a youtube vid of someone o/cing a Q6600 on an EVGA 680 although he was using 1066 ram and mine is 800.

I did try 5-5-5-15 but that didn't cut it and had to stick with 5-5-5-18.

I am really at a loss as to what to try next as there seem to be so many variables and don't know whether I should be pushing one voltage up whilst dropping another.

Really doing my head in now :(

Right I found some settings in a guy's sig who posted on another forum about "FSB holes". I consequently set my FSB to 1440 which gives me 3.24GHz and the settings were:

FSB: 1550 (I couldn't get that but have done 1440 for now)
Linked/synced memory 5-5-5-15 2T (I have had to do 5-5-5-15 2T)
CPU: 1.3
FSB: 1.4
Mem: 2.1
SPP: 1.45
MCP: 1.525
SPP<>MCP: 1.25

Now this at least got me booted into windows but caused BSOD as soon as I started P95 going. I have started to gradually raise the CPU voltage and am up to 1.4 atm and am now on Test 4 on P95. I still anticipate it will crash further but am I going in the right direction merely raising the CPU voltage or can anyone think of anything else I could be trying?

CPU temps with P95 running are #1 - 48, #2 - 49, #3 - 41 and #4 45. Do these seem about right and what temps could I go to max. if I were to head more towards 1.5 on the CPU voltage?

Input welcome :)

Temps now in 50s, 25mins in...

About 40mins in with P95 blend run atm. Test 7 of 10k pass. If it goes well I will make sure I post all the exact settings. Mine is an A2 revision, I see you have an A1. I am also running P33 bios. Not sure how much difference it will make.

Boo hiss. Hit 45mins and it rebooted. I have upped CPU voltage to 1.4375 now. Running test again. Not sure if I should increase any of the other voltages too.

My temps right now running prime are:

I think anything under 60c is good, but i am sure someone more knowledgeable could be more correct.

temps upto 70c are fine when stress testing. with p95 i like to keep them 65 or below. instead of using blend test try small ftt's they will raise your temps quicker and are better for finding instabilitys so i am lead to believe.

i'm at 3.2ghz now but suddenly ibt takes 200seconds to do each run rather then like 70-80seconds at 3.1ghz. This happened before at a previous stage, can't think what I increased to fix it.

got ram at 1:1.20 850mhz ish, 2.125v

are you using a custom setting to use only your free memory. this should make the test run quicker

i am a bit of an amateur so i will try my best.
most G0 revision Q6600's will do 3.0ghz on stock voltage.
its the 4 sticks of ram

your stock speed fsb is 266 with a x9 multiplier, so 266 x 9 = 2.4ghz
if you set the ram at 1:1 as far as i know you will be underclocking your ram.
your ram speed is 400mhz and if you set it to 1:1 your ram speed will then be 266mhz
i have a different mobo than you, but on mine it gave me different ram speeds eg. 667mhz. 800mhz, etc... i just left mine at 800

as you are using 4 sticks of ram, you will have to add more volts to the northbridge.
i bet if you removed 2 sticks and raised your fsb 300 x 9 (2.7ghz) or even 333 x 9 (3.0ghz) your pc will boot.

its harder to OC with 4 sticks of ram than 2

It's cool, I think I have it cracked. If you leave the ram at default by the time you have gone from 266 up to 356 the ram will be high 900's, with 1:1.20 mines at low 800's so all good I think.

It all seems good at 3.2ghz with no issues. My rams at 5-5-5-15 but it says it should be 4-4-4-15, any issue with setting it to 4-4-4-15? anything you think I may need to change else where to allow for it?
