****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

that's 2 out of the many reasons why the Atrix is top dog for me right now.

the others are the smaller foot print, 4 android buttons, HDMI out, fingerprint reader. I also prefer the overall look of the Moto.

The sammy's killer features are the screen and camera.

one review stated the sammy has HDMI, but no mention on the website

Just looking at the specs between the Motorola Atrix and the SGS2. Looks like the Atrix will have better screen resolution and bigger battery.
I think that HDMI connection is not supported by the Samsung chipset as every tegra2 phone has the HDMI connection as does the Atrix.

Strange why Samsung didnt just use the Tegra 2 instead of their own chipset, this could be down to its better to use what you have then you can meet demand. I wont be happy when Samsung releases the Tegra 2 version in an other part of the world.

I'm waiting for reviews of both to come out, Engadget's review of the Atrix is out now, not massively good in some aspects, mainly the laptop/dock features being both expensive and slow/crap.

From a personal perspective I think I'd take an unlocked/hackable bootloader over HDMI out really, plus a bigger SAMOLED+ should be rather nice :)

Also interested in what the battery life of the SGS2 will be, I believe the Cortex A9 was designed so one core can be power gated, but the Tegra 2 doesn't implement this, if the Exynos does then the difference in power usage my not be quite as big as the battery size itself indicates (which to be fair is only 17% or so bigger)

This could be another trade off I guess in getting the SGS2 over the Atrix.

Engadgets review showed the Atrix perfectly fine for use as a smartphone and the media dock implementation is faultless - laptop performance was sub-par but that was to be expected.

I'm expecting Exynos and Tegra 2 to have identical power consumption - i would have expected samsung to advertise it otherwise...

Not quite, they said that the remote that comes with the dock is useless, and as such the dock is pointless as without the remote it's easier to just hook the phone directly to the tv via the hdmi out.

But yes, as a smartphone their only real comment was Motoblur (and bundled bloat, although that could well be more AT&T than the phone itself), but I'm sure the same would be said of Touchwiz, although that leads to the custom rom bit to truly get rid of everything which is somewhere the SGS2 undoubtedly wins.

I doubt the Exynos is going to be significantly better than Tegra2, but it is possible that it is better, and that combined with the screen could be good enough to negate the fairly small difference in battery life between the two phones.

Both seem to be good phones, it all depends what you're looking for, for me the SGS2 seems to tick more boxes, but that's just a personal opinion...

I could be wrong here but i think if you have a Tegra 2 chipset you get a HDMI output, and if you have an Exynos chipset then you dont get an HDMI output. Hence the photo with the SGS2 with HDMI and others photo's without! Just an idea.

That seems to be the case yes, Exynos may support HDMI out and samsung decided it wasn't a selling point, but I doubt that, it's more likely it simply doesn't support it.

The hardware does support HDMI 1.3, the production ready SGS2 could always include a HDMI port.

Here's the Orion/Exynos Block diagram.

Edit:

Engadget look at webtop/docks from a general consumer perspective (rightly so) but its main strength is the end-to-end virtualization that the full Citrix client brings.

Apologies if this has been asked already but is the a confirmed release date?

Also, what resolution is this screen? A friend of mine is looking to get an Android phone soon and is this the one to get or do HTC have something lined up?

No confirmed release date yet but it will probably be some time in March (rumoured to be the 4th).

The screen is 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches.

HTC have got nothing lined up that can compete with this currently.

This is the phone to get, its only real rival is the Motorola Atrix.

I would also like to know the confirmed release date as I'm contemplating on getting a HTC desire HD. Looking at the reviews etc the galaxy S2 looks a beast of a phone.

800x480 screen res, 4th March at the earliest...and HTC seems to be dead in the water thus far this year.
