****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

I don't know if anyone yet has noticed this but in order to utilize DivX fully on the SGS II you must first register the handset.
Unfortunately it is not as simple as tapping on the screen and then playing DivX media. Instead you have to go through a complex routine....

As such here is a step-by-step guide in how to do this as painlessly as possible.

To register DivX you need to do the following:-
1. On the SGSII go to Settings/About Phone/Legal Information/License Settings/DivX VOD/Register
Tap on Register and it will give you a registration code which you need to make a note of.
2. Once done you then have to go to your PC and download the registration file by clicking on where it says 'Free Download' from DivX ~ http://vod.divx.com
3. This will then download a file titled DivXInstaller.exe to your PC.
4. Install this file on your PC then run the DivX Plus Player and click on the players menu 'VOD/Register a DivX Certified Device' and fill in the card that loads using the code you wrote down earlier.
5. A file will then be downloaded to the PC which you then have to copy across to the SGSII.
6. Once copied simply play the file and the SGSII is then registered.
7. Finally, go back into the settings menu on your phone and you will now notice where it used to say register it is now 'greyed out' and 'Deregister' is available to click on should you wish to de-register.

Job done....

it's only Protected Divx that won't play unless you registar, i've never even seen a protected divx file though.

Mine's arriving tomorrow! I'm keen to root it, but there's also new firmware out, so does it get a bit tricky? I'd appreciate a link to somewhere that explains rooting and upgrading the firmware, if it's possible?

Gonna do the research tonight so I'm ready to go as soon as soon as it arrives. Can't wait! Never had an Android before!

If it's sim free and unbranded handset then use Odin, it's the quickest and easiest. The debranding method is slightly different but it's on XDA via the links below anyway so just check those out.

1a: Enter download mode (vol down + home + power)
1b: Install new FW via Odin in DL mode, phone will reboot when done.

2a: Enter download mode again.
2b: Install insecure kernel via DL mode via Odin, phone will reboot when done.
(the kernel is attached to the first post here)

3a: Pre-req, download SuperOneClick
3b: Once rebooted normally after insecure kernel flash run SuperOneClick with phone connected and simply click root and say yes to install superuser/busybox etc.

4: Flash stock FW kernel via Odin in DL mode, this removes the caution symbol at boot. Stock kernel for KE2 etc are in the link in step 1b.

If it's sim free and unbranded, what would be the point in rooting? Mine's from Vodafone, so I'm guessing it's full of loads of their crap I want rid of.

There's always a point in rooting for the avid Android user and it's risk free.

See my screenshot from earlier for some apps that rely on root.

After deleting the .db file yesterday I charged to 100% and almost 18 hours later I'm at 39% battery:

I use Wi-Fi all the time, have twitter sync on, Friendcaster checking, Gmail sync and background data.

Notice the Android OS CPU time! Also Diaply on tiem is saying just over 2 hours which seems about right.

i just charge everyday, just cos its a new phone it means jack! technology has not changed. the battery is still like that of any other smart phone, my desire was the same and the hero before.

people say its a higher capasity battery than the desire for example, but then the screen is bigger and better?

just get used to surroundiong your self with power outputs! if your not charging most days now you will in a few months anyway!

i keep a charger...

In car
at work
in study
in bedroom
in laptop bag :D

I got my handset yesterday what the deal with the phone charging keep making beep noises?, got it with Vodafone came with vodafone preinstalled crap on it

Well whatever I replace my current phone (HTC Hero) with, I will probably run for two years or so. Given NFC is likely to take off in that time (at least, I hope it does, because it's a really good idea), I would be pretty peeved if a year down the line NFC is becoming useful and I don't have a compatible phone.

It won't. It'll take at least two years for the supermarkets to implement NFC, if they even decide to do so. It makes more sense to get the phone now, then make your next one an NFC-equipped handset if it actually proves popular.
