****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Does he say if he's using the stock headphones? They are rubbish but I guess that's to be expected.

I'm using Ultimate Ears 100 and Senneheiser HD595 and my usual audio consists of a Xonar STX and NAD amp on the PC for comparison.

Replaced the handset in store as I'd had it under 2 days...and this one is just as bad...Sat next to my wife San Francisco which shows Good Signal Strength and 54Mbps and SGS2 shows Poor Signal 13Mbps.

BALLSSS

Hmm when I tested SGS2 wifi with speedtest.net in the same room as router is placed (some cheap d-link cr*p) - I got about 18mbps (and good quality signal), when I moved to different room but within the same apartment (about 10 meters away with 2 walls in a way) I have only ~ 4mbps. But the worst thing is that the signal is really low in that room and the measured graph often has sudden spikes etc which directly corresponds to web browsing experience - e.g.: sometimes there are pauses when loading a web page etc. Loading of pages definitely felt much snappier in the router room.

I've also compared with an Asus netbook - when netbook is in the same room as router - I get 22mbps (and 40mps via ethernet), when I move to that different room I still have about 10mbps and good signal strength. Unless this is something that can be fixed by FW update then wi-fi in SGS2 seems like a disappointment (I've read some other complaints as well) :/

Gotta say I am seriously impressed with the audio chip in this phone, watching some mkv TV series I transferred over and the sound quality is superb.I'd go as far as to say its what I'd expect from an amplified source.

Via headphones of course.
Any more info on which chip it uses ? Btw by amplified source you mean it has some sort of head amp built in ? I've briefly tested the sound output and it seems decent - but one thing I don't like: the low freq. being bumped up on my regular portable phones (e.g. compared to iaudio 7 player) but SGS2 paired with Senn HD 595 actually appears as a nice synergy since the headphones are a bit bass shy themselves. So when bass is under control I prefer SGS2 over i7 sound-wise. (it's kinda more "alive")

Guys, keep reading about calibrating the battery but how do I do this.did a quick google search but nothing.
How do I get hold of the battery calibrater?

battery calibration is just a quick and dirty fix to s problem where the battery info is out of kilter. just charge and discharge your phone fully a few times and it should right it self.

I was thing of trying some different Launchers/default apps, but wanted to learn a bit about them first. Is the launcher I have TouchWiz4? Can this be changed to another Launcher without rooting?

As yet, I am not sure which parts of the phone are Android and which parts are Samsung specific, so just wandering what is changeable and what is not (without rooting)

Can someone let me know which bits are which from the list below (i.e. part of TouchWiz, A Samsung App, Stock Android App, 3rd Party) and also whether they would be changed by installing another single app or by replacing the Launcher.

-Home Screen
-4 buttons at bottom
-7 Home Screens
-Music Player
-Hubs
-Gallery
-Camera
-Widgets
-Navigation

These are the main things I would like to change or see alternatives to, but only if I can do it without rooting etc, (I am not opposed to the idea of rooting, but on day 2 of owning the phone, it is too soon!).

p.s. I have an iPod Touch 2G, and I notice the SGS2 seems to be quieter when the headphones are on full whack (using the same headphones on both). Does that seem right (as an example I have to listen the the SGS2 at about 80% on a bus to hear it well whereas it was much lower for the iPod).

All those things are samsung specific and as such are replaceable with alternatives. As far as the homescreens etc go try launcher pro, replacing the launcher does not require rooting.

Is there any way of removing the top info bar from the lockscreen without using any 3rd party launchers or rooting?

I see.

1) Can the Samsung ones be uninstalled or made inactive if I prefer the alternative ones, or would I just have to hide/delete the icon of the built in ones?
2) Is the best place to get alternatives to the above just the Android Market?
3) Do you have recommendations on alternatives to any of the items (preferably free)? I am going to trawl this thread and the Essential apps one in a bit, but that will take a while!

And if you get something like the Home Launcher app you can use that to swap between launchers and your default samsung launcher.
Does this cost money?

Everytime the phone starts it will ask which launcher you would like to use if you have more then one installed unless you click the tick box and select the launcher you would like to use by default.

Yes, the battery is quite awesome. It seems that mobile companies have now finally realised you need to carefully consider the battery and make sure it can survive a day of being hammered at least.

Having said that, the HTC Sensation is being reported as having DesireHD-esque battery life, which is shocking

23:15 - 47% on battery still!

-Home Screen - Touchwiz Launcher
-4 buttons at bottom - Touchwiz Launcher
-7 Home Screens - Touchwiz Launcher
-Music Player - Samsung
-Hubs - Samsung
-Gallery - Stock app
-Camera - Samsung
-Widgets - Some are Samsung, some are Google, some are 3rd party
-Navigation - Stock app

Most can be replaced without rooting, except the Samsung software - like the Hubs.

Usually people replace the launcher with Launcher Pro Plus, Go Launcher EX or ADW EX. I still use Touchwiz because it's actually fine for me atm :p

There isn't really any replacements for the Hubs that I know of, don't know why anyone would want any. They can only be uninstalled or frozen by having root permission. You can of course hide them using folders or with a different launcher like Launcher Pro.

You can buy Copilot to replace the navigation, but there is really no need since the Google Navigation is fine :)

To extend on the answers here, more with an aim of showing what you'd need to do to alter different bits: (EDIT: Didn't see Locke's identical post before writing this :p)

-Home Screen
-4 buttons at bottom
-7 Home Screens

These three are defined by the launcher, the buttons at the bottom is the dock, and the 7-home screens, note that the launcher doesn't massively influence what is on the homescreens it just provides the home screens, dock and apps drawer to put stuff on if that makes sense

-Music Player
-Hubs
-Gallery
-Camera

These are all either samsung apps (eg hubs) or samsung-modified android apps, the latter can be replaced, the hubs are essentially useless imo.

-Widgets
-Navigation

Widgets is a bit of a wide ranging one, many applications will install with widgets, or even be purely widget applications, but too generic to state further.

Navigation is stock android :)

If you root all apps can be uninstalled, not overly necessary, with regards to removing the icon then some launchers (like Launcher Pro) can hide programs from the apps draw.

Yep, android market is good, but also quite useful to get reccomendations from various sources such as forums and blog sites (the register for example have started a 'android app of the week' bit which is quite interesting.

As for price, some apps/widgets are free, others aren't, some have 'lite' versions for free and full-fat paid for versions...

Bit hard to give reccomendations but starting with the launcher there are quite a few options:

Launcher Pro (the 'plus'/paid-for version adds some nice widgets for texts/calendar/gmail that I love)
Go Launcher (seems quite popular, not really tried it properly)
ADW (again, some fans, did try it a while back and didn't like it, probably been updated many times since then so who knows)

There are also several others but those seem to be the top 3, it's always worth trying several different options to see what fits you best...

Thanks for both you detailed replies. This will keep me busy for a day or so :)

Not interested in the Hub (although I have not really used them general consensus seems to be they are useless and/or bloatware). I just listed that as an item to remove, but I will just hide/delete/ignore their icons for now.

Edit: Just noticed my first item I listed was Home screen, I meant Lock Screen. Is that part of the Lanucher or separate?

No he does full testing on the actual audio stuff not just listening with headphones, all seems rather technical from his twitter posts.

Personally I think its pretty decent sound wise.

Ah, thought it was a bit odd, no the Lock Screen is seperate (and yes, the Samsung one is awful), there's an app called widget locker which will fix that, lots of configurability although I just have a very simple slider to unlock/change volume and the time/battery/alarm at the top :p

not free but well worth it:
