****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

You need to compare it to the one running on the phone originally and get one similar!

Check the thread and download the one that best matches the original.

I can flash back to the original GB kernel.... but that is no good is it?

Assuming not, I cant find the correct one for the phone as its now on ICS but wont boot to allow me to see the version. Does that make sense?

I can flash new firmware fine... but it still hangs.

I cant get into phone to look at firmware version etc. Backed up via Kies, is that what you mean?

In short, I need a kernel for a sim free S2.... guessing the ones im trying are not the right one, cant do a hard reset either for some reason.

EDIT: A Kernel for a sim free *ICS* G2 I mean.

OK, update.

Found a random kernel and flashed it.... phone now boots.

Just have the warning triangle on boot up.

So, basically guys, I just need a vanilla sim free ICS kernel now to flash using Odin.

Sorry for my unintelligible posts, been in a bit of a flap.

So, alex24...

1 Yes, can get into download mode.

2 Yep, flashing with Odin.

Just need a stock sim free ICS kernel now and im good to go. :)

quick question never had to do it but it seems ill have to go back to stock ics from samsung.. so is this correct

download firmware carphone warehouse lp7 looks to be ok? even tho my phone was unlocked/unbranded

then get correct CF root according to modem..

root

install custom rom?

Playing with undervolting now on latest Siya 3.1rc6, going to give it a run tomorrow at work as I only use 3G/HSDPA there so no Wifi, so far stable though so if all goes well this time tomorrow I will post the voltages I am using for both CPU (using Rom Control > Performance in HydrogenICS ROM) and GPU (using ExTweaks).

Also, the KF2 modem on 3 gives

So not really any different :p

As above, just flash a whole new ROM rather than just the kernel. Depending on the ROM, it will be one or 3 files (e.g. PDA, CSC, PHONE).

Unlocked and unbranded is XEU CSC code. The latest stock ROM LP7 here sounds like it's what you want. If you want root, grab the CF-Root for that ROM, as well and flash it after, then you'll be rooted with recovery etc.

I went from LPQ to NELP2 and I get a lot better signal on 3. Haven't seen much change in the max bandwidth though. I think it's probably more dependant on the area you are in.

thanks! someone recommended me to do to this because my phone seems to have developed an odd habit of WiFi going into 'Deep" sleep and never waking up + signal just dying off for no reason and then coming back again and it seems to do this with every ROM

tried wiping everything
fixing permissions
4 different ROM's

all have the same problem.. wifi wakes back up after turning it on/off and signal comes back on too so it has to be software related as far as i can tell.. anyone had this before?

Which ROMs have you tried?

I know it's a feature to save power, but it depends on if something is using it. I remember on my Galaxy S this was normal and you could set wifi not to sleep when the screen was off. Not sure on SGSII...

I also read about some kind of Wifi problem with the leaked samsung ICS roms. Not sure if that's resolved in the latest LP7 but it'd be worth reading the thread I linked above about that.

aleks24, thanks for the help.

Can I make Kies reinstall ICS again (to get the stock kernel back)?

Or is there a link to a sim free stock kernel around?

Thanks again!

Do you know what I mean by ROM and what exactly the kernel is? Just to clarify, the ROM is the whole package, the kernel is just the software element that interfaces between the hardware and operating system. Kernels are unique to each different ROM (almost all the time) and not really interchangeable.

When you try to update with Kies, what ROM does it offer you? I've never used Kies on my SGSII, only Odin as it's much better. Yellow triangle can be dealt with...

XDA forums is the best place to go for all this stuff. Plenty to read and learn so you don't fall into the usual traps!

Stock ICS roms, use Check Fus to download directly from Samsung, or look here.

Hi I've installed the HyDrOG3N mod but cannot find the google play or google app store anywhere on the new install.

Any way around this or is it not possible to install apps on a modded rom?

Thanks
