****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

 You don't like the new gmail app!!!???????

Have you tried a different browser? quick ics browser or ics browser + are the best IMO.

The main thing brought by ICS is HW acceleration but you guys have had that ever since the release of the GS 2 though so :p

Other improvements are faster browsing, less battery drain when the mobile is on stand by, stereo recording amongst other stuff.

Aye, with 1 new mail, when I click on the notification it opens it immediately iirc. I don't like that, half my mails are spam I don't even want to open, I always want to go to my ''inbox'' when I click the new mail notification.

I always used the stock browser as it was mostly fine, only used Firefox mobile for sites that didn't properly work/show on the stock one.

Battery life is significantly worse now, I used to manage a whole day ( usually with about 2 hrs of spotify use per day, medium whatsapp use, and 2-3 calls per day) and still be above 30% with all the stuff enabled, now at the end of the day I hear ''bleep bleep'' every time that it's below 30% and just before going to bed usually ''bleep bleep'' under 5% battery:(... I do have the stock Samsung software on it though like always, perhaps I should flash to a non Samsung version with all the background Samsung tripe off ?
But 2.3.5 (or 2.3.6, whatever I was on) was definitely more battery friendly.
Also my gps was active for no reason yesterday? No app was running that used it yet the icon was flashing, this hasn't happened to me since 2.3.4 ( not turning it off completely, I use it for various apps, incl. Navigation, speed trap warnings, etc...)

So no changes to my apps, settings or data?

That's right - I did mine via KIES. I didn't bother with the KIES Backup either as I think it's slow and ****.

But yes - just install the latest version of kies, plug the s2 it into your pc, hit update and follow instructions.

I'll tell you in a minute if Benjo doesn't get back to you, I'm going to just flash over the top, too much effort to FW, and Suicidus from the TeamHydra forums didn't bother and said it's working fine.

Ah, no, I mean the search boxes here:

I can open either of those boxes, then the keyboard pops up momentarily, then it disappears and the search box closes. That happens with the default browser, ICS browser, Boat, but not with opera.

Seems to be specific to these forums too as I can use search boxes on other forums.

Oh right, just tried it myself on quick ics browser using ICS keyboard and sense keyboard and I also have the same problem

Ah, I see what you mean, but couldn't you just open the gmail app then via the app drawer/dock shortcut instead of clicking on them in the notification bar? :p

Did you just update without doing a factory reset? If not a factory reset could solve the battery drain.

What can you do with those exactly? This one is a full wipe version too. I updated to the previous build yesterday haha. :p

Yeh I didn't full wipe, just cleared cache and dalvik. Did a full backup just incase though :)

Theme manager lets you install CM9/AOKP themes that are on the play store. Device Tweaks is just a full section in the settings that gives a lot more modification options, like cpu/gpu clocks, sound and display tweaks etc. Sense 4 recent apps is the style of recent apps found in Sense 4 :p Hold the home button and it looks pretty.

ah ok thanks, sounds good. I'll try it soon.

Just updated my S2 on Three to ICS. Only thing that is bugging me is that the default power saving widget is now 4x3 instead of 4x2 (or 4x1 even older). Doesn't appear to be any means to compress it to smaller without cutting off the edges. Anyone know if it is possible to make the whole thing smaller, maybe take off the labels?

^^^ Is this still the easiest/simplest way to Root the SII?

I literately just want superuser access on the stock ICS rom for now to make use of root apps and full backups. I have no rooting experience at all.

Yep root with that find the same kernel you are using & flash in odin with PDA.

You can then use triangleaway(linked in that thread) afterwards to reset the count/get rid of yellow triangle :)

cheers Mattey1 - could you give me a lowdown of what ClockworkMod does excatly - what are it's uses.

It takes over the android recovery part. If you press vol up + home + power together when the phone is off before you root you can see the differences :)

But it is a recovery system that lets you install custom roms, kernels, themes, backup your roms & wipe different areas of the phone like system, cache, dalvik.

Pretty good guide although CWM is quite a few versions newer now.

cheers having a read of cwm now. So does cwm take over odin after the using odin for the first time?

Nah Odin remains, You access that by pressing Vol Down + Home + Power together when the phone is off :) That is also known as download mode. You can use Odin to flash stock roms / custom kernels & some custom roms like lightning rom.

CWM overwrites stock Android recovery the majority of custom roms etc all install through CWM.

Excellent.

So this is my Android version:

therefore CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip is the zip I want?

I keep that zip on the PC right? and use odin to flash it to the SII.
