Kies has just told me I have an update. I'm on Orange. It would appear that this is 4.0.4 being rolled out.

EDIT: Nope, just a different build of 4.0.3

EDIT2: GPS still doesn't work, anyone know how to fix that?

GPSfix may sort it out you can grab it from the android market, beware of ads though!

Just flashed paranoid, few questions.

Battery has gone absolutely shocking, doesn't last a day now, any idea?
Also how can I set the frequency of mail check via Gmail.

Many thanks.

From Samsung? No idea.

From Cyanogenmod? Indeed don't know when though.

I read that there are things stopping the S2 from getting the JB update (well from Samsung anyway)

That is the screen resolution is too low... supposedly!

I think if Samsung decide they wont upgrade the phone, I may need to go down the rom routes...

Once you use a 3rd party rom, is that it? You can never go back again?

What a load of tosh. The Nexus S is getting Jelly Bean and that is inferior to the S II..
They're just want more people buying the S III, even though most S II users are upgrading to that anyway. Madness!

That is a load of rubbish dude, Don't read that site they are only putting things like that to get hits. The Christian Post is a worthless site also which is the named source on that site.

Screen resolution isn't a problem at all in fact the S2 is more than capable of running Jellybean. Especially if the Nexus S is getting it :p

The only reason the S2 won't get JB is because of what Locke said :)

Unfortunately it is looking like we will have to wait to see if Samsung will release anything because of how closed sourced the hardware is in the damn phone :(

Part of me wishes I had a Nexus :(

It is hard to say if the GS 2 will get JB or not.

Going by their track record, I don't think it will, but due to how popular the GS 2 was and how the GS 3 is even more popular, Samsung would be very stupid to not provide the update.

They are rubbish for providing updates, they only support their flagship devices, pretty much non existent support for any other device of theirs that isn't the flagship. And once a new flagship device is out, the old flagship then gets much less priority with updates i.e. the GS with 2.3 when the GS 2 came out and the GS 2 with ICS (seems more buggy than what it was on 2.3 going by reports here and on XDA) when the GS 3 was coming out, no doubt it will be the exact same again with the GS 3 and GS 4 when released etc.

If they bring the JB update I wouldn't be expecting big things of it.

HTC and SE are better in this regard with the updates and for a range of devices rather than just like 1 or 2 devices of Samsung's lot.

You like on gsmarena and see the amount of devices that Samsung have released since the GS compared to HTC's devices since the desire/nexus one etc. unbelievable the difference

Saying that though, it seems that pretty much all devices only get 2 big android updates and that is it.

I will see what happens with the next big android update, version 5 or whatever it will be and how things go regarding the GN and NS, if they both get the updates (the GN should, but I don't know about the NS as the Nexus one didn't get ICS) within a reasonable time period, my next phone will most likely be a nexus device as well unless HTC, Samsung etc. come out with something much better :p

Unfortunately google don't seem to care about the fragmentation issues, the fragmentation issue is dreadful and is the only area that is really holding android back big time, it is so bad even of the google guys jumped shipped to IOS/apple:

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/software/ex...roid-fragmentation-drove-him-to-ios-50008618/

And only 10% of android devices in the world has ICS running (officially) :(

I've upgraded my S2 to ICS via Kies (3 Network). It has never been flashed or anything but due to the horrendous battery life I have to switch to something custom. Recommendations?

My battery is at 43% with 2h 40m. :( I used to easily get 20 hours+ on Gingerbread.

No synch, wifi or bluetooth on at all.

that a lot you know :/ my screen on time is ~4hrs over the day from 100% to 6% last time i checked so by that time id say its holding fine.. maybe you're using your phone more?

I've got my SGS2 back from repair, and it's filled with Vodafone and Samsung junk. It's teeming with ****e.

What's the quickest way to get rid of it all so I have a usable phone?

I thought I'd try a custom rom, but that meant rooting it, I can't get either of the two "easy" root methods to work. Custom roms install instructions consist of telling me to install the custom rom - which if I could do I wouldn't read the instructions.

I've rooted my SGS1 and SGS2 a few times before and put on custom roms, but I never remember how I did it - and in all honesty I've not a lot of time for tinkering with the phone. I just want something that works without a whole load of **** all over it.

Fail method 1.

Fail method 2.

The way I can remember from before is installing an insecure kernel and I can't remember what I do afterwards. In order to do that I need Odin, which I have, and of course I can't find an appropriate insecure kernel, BULPC. I did find one place but the download links weren't working.

Anyone feel like bailing me out of my frustration here?

Edit : NM. Got it with CF-root. That was the missing link. There's several things now that I do periodically that I forget each time... rooting/custom rom on the phone is one :)

Edit : Installed Resurrection Remix. Had to install an updated kernel to fix wifi.. now up and running :)
