***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

All the hubs, various Samsung apps that I never use, Samsung keyboard included among lots of other ones that didn't apply to me which includes the live wallpapers as well.

Titanium backup worth the £4 asking price?

or is there any other software which can do it for free?

I've only ever used Titanium, although I didn't pay £4 for it back then but yeah it's a one off investment and really useful.

Stoosh, I've sent an email with photo to mobilefun to see if there may be anything they can do but obviously they don't have any pebble blue in stock so will just sit it out and see what they say. This isn't a deal breaker though as I only notice it on a black screen and in the dark. It's not visible at all on any other screen thankfully. On my handset anyway!

I've posted it on XDA too so will see what everyone comes back with. If it's common on many phones then it probably won't be worth replacing as I'll likely get one back with the same blotches perhaps.

Yoiu'll never notice it unless you're in complete darkness though thankfully!

It's inherent to OLED screens. Every single one will always have a level of inconsistent blacks until the manufacturing process changes.

Every device will have it. For a long time I thought my SGS2 and Vita were free from the issue, but even though it's not visible in normal use even at night, the flaws are definitely there.

A few black blotches appear when I view a black image too. It's pretty hard to find them (with max brightness) so I'm not too bothered.

Yeah that was me talking about blotches on mine a week or so ago. On my second replacement now. First replacement had a couple of small ones but was happy with it as first was really bad, unfortunately the home button was faulty.

This second replacement has the blotch effect too but can live with it now, been on all three phones so can't really expect a clear one and only risk getting one as bad as my original!

I just bought the last White S3 from Dixons duty free at Heathrow for £490. Decided to lift it as Dixons do a 2 month return policy from the airport, even if you have used it. So far I love the phone (coming from a BB9700!!). When I get back from my trip I will see if Orange will offer me a decent deal on contract (and take this back) or I will order my PAC code and switch over to giffgaff. Everyone who I have shown it to so far is amazed at the screen and the speed, I certainly have no complaints, awesome phone imo. Anyone here contract free ? are there better / other options than giffgaff for monthly rolling contracts ?

Seems hit and miss then, I'll keep mine as is, cheers all!

Unless Mobilefun are happy to send me a replacement first so I can transfer everything over, then I really CBA with the faff involved.

That's unlucky but as you've said it's not a deal breaker as apparently these blotches are part and parcel of amoled technology but still some people can't live with these blotches, there's lots of threads on XDA that discusses the blotch issue, there's even a PS VITA thread that has the blotch issue.

Mobilefun are spot on when it comes with customer service and after sales care and will sort it out for you. Keep us all posted with how it goes though.

Can you guys with cameras that have manual control test something for me?

Following on from a post by someone else about weird blotches on an all black image displayed on the screen, I checked mine today in pitch darkness and noticed a faint 2 inch or so of blackness on one edge of the screen along with smaller blotches. It doesn't appear to be as visible as the other poster's though but I exaggerated in in the photo so it's easier to see and settings posted below for people to check as well.

This is only visible on an all black screen. This does not exist on any of the S2's I've owned. I'll check my dad's S3 tonight when I go see him in the same way but the way to photograph it to keep the results consistent are as follows:

Stick camera and phone in a cupboard and...
Phone screen brightness: 50%
Camera ISO: 200
Camera Shutter: 15 seconds
Camera Aperture: f/4.5
Remember to pre-focus and use the 10sec timer to avoid shake :p

Those settings will over exaggerate the effect as shown in my photo below but it makes it easier for everyone to see as you do have to focus your eyes in reality and it's not immediately obvious unless you're in pitch darkness and looking at an all black screen.

I don't know how I feel about this though but if it's visible using the above camera settings for lots of people then I'll leave it as is.

Again, it's only visible on an all black screen so make sure your image that you load is all black and not grey or something :p Make sure screen timeout is set to at least a minute to avoid the screen going off!

So far this many people h ave reported similar blotches:

XDA: TBC
OcUK: 1

I downloaded the image from this page to test it - http://www.ledr.com/colours/black.htm

I have a very small ring on part of my screen but that is all... Using my eys as opposed to a camera as I don't have one

I see 3 small blotches on my screen on a black image, I think. I'll h ave a look tonight when it is completely dark but they weren't noticeable unless I put my face next to the screen....

Well even though mobiles.co.uk say they have blue stock on vodafone only, I've gotten an email saying its out of stock but should be with me within 7 days. It's a bit annoying as Im giving my original galaxy s to my dad and next weekend will be the only time I'll see him for a while, but I can't find a similar deal anywhere else, even for the white so I'll hold out for it.

I just put a black screen pixel test on my Note and put it and my head under 2 thick blue blankets and saw no blotches, interesting to see the screen colour in total darkness. I did see a circular black area about 2mm d just to the left and above the home button.

I think that, for most people, they won't even notice it and the ones that do may just be a bit picky for what is a phone that works perfect in 99% of situations.

Manual brightness, I don't use Auto and plus I find it too dim on auto on the S3 with stock kernel.

Web and games total time is hard to tell exactly but guestimate would be a couple of hours combined. The rest was all using various aspects of the phone as mentioned. Oh and 18 minutes of voice calls.

Haptic feedback was left enabled of course and keyboard vibration. I've now turned off the capacitive button lights as I don't really need them on, looks smarter too :p

Yes and No. For text the OneX screen is a bit nicer to read on but only at lower brightness levels/ higher than 50% and it's too bright but so is the AMOLED for indoors usage. outdoors the GS3 is fine, easier to read than the S2 from what I can see.

How does it look if you over expose the image, lots of Vita's look like this or worse.

Seems a pretty common defect with newer OLED displays, if you get a replacement it could end up worse.
