I hope you don't regret buying now - the 12 series will likely have 120hz (done properly). Apple have an upgrade program, though you have to make 11 payments before you can change phones iirc.

Still planning on the 12 but got this to keep me going. I'd prefer the larger Max given the choice but bought this second hand off a chap in the MM - so will almost certainly get the larger version of the 12.

A day with the 11 has also made me realise it's not just the camera Samsung do all their image enhancing nonsense with. The display on the S20 (and my S8+) was a lot more vivid (not necessarily in a good way, just had more pop) but the 11 is far more natural. Funny that Samsung go to all that length and Apple don't even give you an option to make the display more vivid!

Basically they've both got their pros and cons but being a purist Apple have won me over.

You can tweak Samsung displays and from memory you choose between natural or vivid screen colours when you set the phone up but can change it later (and do some other changes to colour etc). Apple you can't do this like you said, but I find the settings on iPhones perfectly fine and wouldn't feel the need to change them (should I go back to an iPhone).

Yep you are right. I've still got my S8+ here and I had it on Adaptive display with standard, natural colours.

I've got the same background on both and to get the iPhone version looking as punchy I had to step up the vibrance setting in Lightroom to +68 and contrast up too and re-export the image

So the iPhone also has a magic wand (image enhancing thing) which you can apply after you have taken the photos. Doing this makes the photos look exactly like they were taken on the S20.

That's all you had to do Samsung, give the choice!

Frankly, I’m quite disappointed in the results of the S20 series. They’re still good, and represent upgrades to the S10 series in most scenarios, but they fall short of the overhyped expectations. I think Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro’s main sensor quality and pictures are still a step above what the S20’s can deliver in daylight, with cleaner, sharper and more natural results.

Echos my experience over the past few weeks. Having gone from S20+ to an IP11 Pro and, funnily enough, using my XT-20 with kit lens to compare the photos! It's actually bizarre how much I can relate to what they are saying.

Not only are both S20 Ultras blurry here, but the Snapdragon S20 Ultra here goes haywire with the sharpening and the foreground vegetation is ridiculously over-processed, as if suffering from high image compression.

Interesting comments about the processors affecting the camera performance. My experience is this paragraph applied to every single photo that I took. Crikey I hope Samsung learn from this.

And from what I've seen the Pixel 3 and 4 main camera out performs both for stills overall. I just love the pixels post processing. Video on the other hand is another story.

I’ve Been so close to buying one of these for the last month or so to replace my note 9 but I think that anandtech review has put me off totally. Might wait for the note 20 now

I had a note 9 before buying the s20+.

My advice is dont, I'm regretting it now.

The only thing noticeably better is the screen/120hz but as stated before the exynos battery hit is significant and would be a different story if it was a snapdragon 865.

If you can source it cheaply and your happy to take that battery hit then fine, if its full price then I'd say no.

I was lucky and got it for 600 quid after trade in and a quidco offer at the time, but i still wish I waited to see what the oneplus8 offered as I'm disappointed in this. I'm a long term samsung user too and have had most of their flagship phones over the years.

I can't see the note 20 being much different tbh, they will probably still use exynos etc and that's where the biggest problem lies it seems.

We are getting an inferior product compared to the rest of the world and it needs to change.

I think it's so close to a great phone that there have got to be lots of people happy with it :)

Yes there will be, especially normal Joe public who won't even know that 2 different variants exist in the world or what is a exynos soc or a sd865 soc.

But to us techy minded people who keep track of these things its like going into the shop and buying a ps4 and its actually a ps3 internally. Both great products in there own right, but you bought it expecting it to perform as their best product available. The exynos is not the best soc Samsung provide, yet obviously money wise the exynos gives them better profit margins, but i think they sell sd865 in other parts of the world due to carrier support? That isn't fair on people like us who still pay top money.

The exynos is a generation behind technically at best and if I didn't get the upgrade itch I would now know this and I should have waited for real world reviews etc before my purchase. Lesson learned.

If the exynos version was the only version that existed then it would be a great product, bar maybe the battery life which seems iffy to me still.

But we pay upto £1400 for their top of the line s20 with exynos, yet elsewhere in the world its an sd865 which some reviews are showing it performing significantly better in all areas.

I guess I am the only one happy with the S20 lol.

I am very happy with my 512 s20 ultra yes it cost a lot of money but then what top tier phone doesn't now. but then i got mine on contract.
The only thing or problem i have had is yesterday 1 time it dropped a call for some reason. and also yesterday lol i was having a phone conversation and i put the caller on mute then no matter what i tried i could not enable the mic. wiered like i said both issues have only happend 1 time. im sure there will be plenty of updates to fix some of the issues other people have been having.

If you used both phones side by side you'd probably be hard pushed to tell.

Yes for everyday users, but as per anandtech review for power users and gamers its very dissapointing, and they will be able to tell

"The power efficiency differences between the Snapdragon and Exynos are acceptable in everyday usage, however if you’re a power user, particularly in gaming, the Exynos 990 won’t fare very well. The M5 CPU is a disappointment and isn’t competitive with the Cortex-A77 cores of the Snapdragon. But at least it’s the last generation of Exynos SoC having to live with such a disadvantage. The GPU performance of the SoC is also very disappointing, as the long-term performance will only be around half of the Snapdragon models."

Same money, but long term GPU performance is half, same money, half the performance.

It's similar to the ranges of cars that have slightly different engines/configurations. However, with them there are price adjustments - that's where it's annoying for non-US customers.

Exactly, if the uk price was changed to reflect this, then i wouldnt have such a big issue with it. But paying the same money for the same product sold in a different country with a better soc is frustrating. We arent talking 1-5% differences either, which you could live with. Half the GPU performance in certain circumstances, i've read 20% less battery performance in another review. Big differences.

For the millionth time the offence is misplaced. The only reason snapdragon versions even exist is because of some radio config requiring snapdragon in the states.

I see there's a performance difference but obviously Samsung's preference will always be to use Samsung parts, they don't make the snapdragon one for the performance difference and wouldn't ever choose to use someone else's part due to cost etc. The moment an Exynos version can be fully global you'll never see another snapdragon one.

Nobody is out to get anyone or rip them off or whatever.
