This is really interesting SD vs Exynos
Wow. Makes me feel better about us having the Exynos, but the truth is if I had the option of the Exy or Snappy, I would probably still pick the Snappy, same as most other people I would assume. Not that it would make a massive real world difference but still.

The camera snaps did look slightly better on the snapdragon. I don't do vids, so not really bothered about that.

It still surprises me that my old pixel2 xl 12mp photos retain more detail for example in my cats fur, grass, foliage etc.

is there a way to get the samsung to save 10mp phots instead of upscaling them?

I've been using the 108 MP sensor on the main lens and it clearly picks up a lot more detail than either my Pixel 2 XL or Pixel 5. You just need to remember to use it. It only works on the main lens, but I've seen an impressive amount of detail from it. Zooming in on parts of the picture looks practically as good as actually zooming into it up to a point.

I have the 108mp selected, but I just prefer the older pictures I've taken. They just look more detailed and sharper. I need to try to get a side by side snap in the same conditions, but right now I feel let down by the s21u photos as my 3 year old phone has taken much better pictures.
I'm not saying they're totally unusable, but as soon as you tap to zoom, the Samsung photos just look poor. Decent dynamic range, but noisy, muddy details, grainy, oversharpened, fringing on contrasting edges..
Perhaps it'll be better in bright sunlight... *Shrug*

I had pretty much the exact same experience.

Two pics below taken at the exact same time. Point and shoot. S21u vs OP8P.
Download and compare both in regards to detail preservation.

The first picture looks the best imho.
[Edit] the difference is even more pronounced after downloading them

I noticed this too. The compression algorithm from 9 to 1 pixels along with the smaller file size must be part of it.
Taking the pictures in raw then converting with a third party app would probably help with the compression, but it's still an extra step.
Or do any other camera apps allow for changing the amount of jpeg compression applied?

My new black s21 ultra arrived today. Generally like the phone. A few things however.

Nav bar needs a bit more tweaking to work closer to my pixel 2.

Loads of Samsung bloat. I've managed to uninstall or hide most. Switched lots of default apps to Google equivalents.

Fingerprint scanner has been fairly poor so far. I've got my thumb scanned in 3 times... I have delicate hands of someone who normally works in an office...

Some low light photos have had a lot of noise in, which my pixel 2 handles fine.

What do you feel needs tweaking on the nav bar?

The fingerprint sensor thing is an odd one. The pixel ones never worked that well for me but the S21 Ultra has been a revelation in comparison. I wonder whether some peoples fingers suit certain types of device more.

I notice that about low light photos, but I've found I can fix by using night mode in dark scenes, and selecting the 108 MP sensor if using the main lens certainly helps with the detail too. I will admit I'm not quite as blown away by the camera as I expected, but overall, it's still pretty damn good for a smartphone and is clearly still there or thereabouts in outright capability. Nice to have a zoom / macro / high MP sensor capability coming from the Pixel.

I've already swapped recent apps and back around, as Samsung seem to have everything back to front. Its also fairly annoying the power button not being at the top.
For the nav bar I'd just like it to collapse and be more contextual like the pixels. I've not gone full gesture as I don't find back and app draw work that well.

Fingerprint on the pixel 2xl worked almost every time for me. On the s21 I'd say its about 2 in 3.

Actually liking all the customisation options.

Pretty much all set up now. With font and zoom on lowest settings. Resolution on max and app and homescreen grid sizes on max. Feels much less like a toy phone.

Night mode can improve the dimly lit indoor images a little, but takes extra seconds to take the picture which is no good for anything moving.
Even taking pictures of the cat when he stays still, using night mode sometimes gives weird blurring effects because he's breathing during the seconds the phone is recording images.
Fairly annoying the power button not being at the top.
Definitely agree with this.
I still keep hitting the volume up button instead of the power

Got the S21 standard today, got all my stuff moved across from my OnePlus 7 Pro.

Got to say initial impressions weren't great. My OnePlus 7 Pro screen blows this out of the water in many ways.

Rest seems decent, however the device gets really warm when using the camera for only a few minutes. I've seen a lot of ppl complain about this online.

I'm on the Jan 1 security patch.
