**** The Official Samsung Galaxy S23 Family Thread ****

I should really post a link if people want to try it :)

You do need to follow the install instructions otherwise the app will force close when you try to open it, but it's pretty straight forward and only involves making a folder and dropping config files in there and on first use opening GCam by pressing and holding the app to then load up the config you want to try. Then you good to go ;)

XDA Gcam

If I find the time, I'll put some comparison shots up, but it's always interesting to hear what others think.

While love the versatility of the camera, never quite liked the processing from Samsung so always find myself tweaking things in post.

I actually really liked Sony's colours, especially the greens but their software support and auto camera app experience is meh.

Definitely be giving GCAM a go.

After yes and no-ing all day, I finally placed the order and will get it on the 15th next month.

Managed to get it down to £539 after the £200 cashback and trade in.

Now I'm sure there are people who can do a better job of this, and I've no idea what is or has been lost in compression, zooming in windows image viewer, editing (screengrab) and save in paint (yep), and then uploading to imgur etc.. But heyho here goes nothing :D

So. these are a few images I took today while at work. Hand held just flicking from stock camera app to Gcam app and pressing to focus on the centre of the shot and then pressing capture. As far as I know its the latest Gcam with the Medium sharpness config. The Stock S23Ultra camera app is just set without scene optimiser, as that just makes images look garish. (to me anyways), and the 3:4 camera option.

So in all these, the Samsung Camera is on the LEFT, and GCam on the RIGHT.

Not quite sure how these will look on the forum, and I'm certainly no photographer. Just pickup, focus and shoot.
To my eye the Gcam, although slightly softer, seems to get slightly more detail, and actually looks closer to what I'm seeing with the naked eye. In some shots the Stock app is very close, but it can easily over sharpen, add a bit too much contrast, and also add a bit too much saturation.....But hey what do I know :D

All seem much better with the app and for me the above is one I took more notice of.

The lighter colours are softened and fit the photo better than without the app and the black cover around the motor looks much better, as do the cables & connector block.
Torx screws not much difference, but overall it is a much more pleasing to the eye photo that has removed the lighter colour glare and improved finer details.

The guy over at xda (linked above) who has been tweaking the configuration file is up to around version 13 or so, and there are three xml files that are included with each version in the zip file: soft, medium, sharp.
Drop all three into the LMC8.4 folder then from the camera app you can select which one you prefer to use.

The part people usually get stuck on is getting the app working first time to load the xml config file. Once installed you don't open the app by tapping on the icon (that will force close), you press and hold the icon to pop up the shortcut menu then open the app from there. Then double tap on the RH side of the shutter button to choose which config you want to use. Once that is done is used normally as any other app.

If you're ur feeling brave, there are hundreds of tweaks from within the app, it's way beyond me so I leave them alone.

As much as I prefer using the stock app, I just don't anymore. For the past few weeks while sat around or out and about I've just been tapping away with each camera app and comparing them, and 9 times out of 10 the GCam takes a better shot. Which suits me as I very rarely start editing my photos once they've been taken.

That's interesting to hear, I tend to use the sharp xml in GCam and to my eyes end up with a more detailed image than the stock app.

From the pictures I took yesterday posted above, no editing, just zoomed in fully in the Gallery app and screen shot. These are how they compare:

Have you tried camera assistant for the default app? That has a picture softening setting if off/medium/high

Has anybody else found that since the June update that their eye comfort shield randomly turns itself on during the day, I have mine set to custom time between 22:15 - 06:00 and several times a day it has come back on itself, at the point now where I'm going to turn it off completely. S23U

Certainly gcam pics look better. Interested to know if you tweaked your Samsung photo app, as I believe if you do some tweaking, the pics are better?

I don't think there are any settings to tweak with the stock app to get it to match GCam, if there was that would be great.
There's over 100 pages of discussion over on xda and the telegram chat is massive, I'm sure if someone had found a way we would have known about it.

I've tried camera assistant, but that doesn't do much. And I'd rather not spend time messing about editing and tweaking every photo I take just to match GCam :( It's a shame as the stock app is more user friendly and nicer to use than GCam.

On the subject of the camera app, can you disable the shutter sounds within in app? On my UK S23, the option is missing, so I have to mute the system sounds

Looks like there's a new version released on a newer version of GCam.

Only for the ultra at the minute though

I've noticed what appears to be like a small grey/shadow square near the top of the screen.

It's only really visible if you look for it but it's definitely only just appeared over the last few days.

I'll see if I can get a pic of it and post it.
