*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

I'm surprised we know what we do. Samsung are usually good at keeping things under wraps.

I'll be watching the launch, won't be getting the S4 though. Happy with my S3 for now. Maybe tempted by the Note 3 though.

So what do we think the S5 will be like as that'll be the phone of the moment when it's time for me to upgrade :p

Anandtech's look at the one S display:

It isn't so much the brightness though, more that it just looks pure white and doesn't have a warm yellow tint to it (GS 2 was horrendous for this)

Side by side with my calibrated dell U2311H, you would be hard pressed to notice the difference as that is how good I find the whites on the one S, maybe I have a poor U2311h when it comes to whites though....

Trying to find the photos I took of my S when white was displayed and came across this:

3. Display - even if font details can not compete with X or my GN I prefer the better blacks of the S compared to X and the better whites compared to my GN. Also this Amoled is not blueish or greenish, like S2 or GN.

Here are just a couple of photos of the mobile displaying a white screen in the dark, one at 50% brightness and 100% brightness, photos were taken by the desire. Doesn't look quite the same as what it does with your own eyes but that is the best I could do, sorry :(

There is also a video comparing it to the GS 3, trying to find it now.

And many many other people on xda who had both gs 3/gs 2 and one s have said the same.

Perhaps I was just one of the lucky ones and the gs 3 I seen was a bad one as this sort of stuff varies a lot, no display panel is exactly the same as every expert in the display tech. world will tell you, in fact ask PCM 2 in the monitor thread.

Don't exaggerate anything, after all if I did, then why are there many other user opinions and some review sites saying the same then?

The whites aren't that bad on the GS 3 that it makes you want to change your phone for a better one but I found that it was noticeable even when not side by side with the one S etc.

I am not blinded by brand loyalty unlike a lot of people, if something is crap, I will say it, if something is good/better I will admit regardless of the brand and generally why I think is backed up by "hard evidence" :p (most of the time :p)

In fact I think you've said something in this thread about exynos based devices being tricky with flashing?

Not quite that, but this:

Easy to flash, crap to develop ASOP ROMs and things like that for due to the closed source nature of the exynos code.

CM developers are ****ed of with samsung due to that and iirc were at the point were they no longer wanted to support galaxy devices.

Yeah, I think if I did get a GS 4, I would root and flash a touchwiz based themed stock android ROM/JBD theme as that is the only thing I really hate about touchwiz these days.

I think we've all been trolled by Samsung and the leaks so far, and are in for something truly special tonight.

Maybe... but unfortunately I very much doubt it.

I've thought the same as you when there were leaks before but they always turn out to be pretty accurate.

I think if Samsung release the device we've seen so far, it's going to be pretty damn good.

IIRC the head developer left due to the fact he couldn't be arsed with it any more.

Yeah something big happened, didn't think that he had left though? I thought he/they just decided to not support any other exynos based phones apart from the galaxy flagship/note devices?

For anyone interested, brief look/explanation about it here:

EDIT:

Posted on XDa by a CM developer:

It's not about samsung or sony.
It's about the soc used. In our case exynos.

Samsung doesn't provide proper sources or documentation for their own platform.
And if they do after it's much to late, it's outdated and incompatible.

Compare the qualcom or omap based samsung phones vs. the exynos ones.
All qualcom and omap based samsung phones got jellybean and butter in zero time.
We're still fighting with exynos and the i9100 guys have to wait another months if it will get jellybean at all.
I assume samsung is skipping it and will only do a value pack. There's no single line of code or a leak yet.
It's a shame.

I9100g (omap4, same hardware as i9100) got jellybean pretty instant. opensource hwcomposer, opensource audio, butter, working tvout
I9100: (exynos4, same hardware as i9100g) buggy jellybean, closed source and incompatible audio, no butter, no tvout, bugs which will never be solved.

what do we learn from this?
Don't buy exynos phones.

I don't think there'll be anything spectacular we'll probably see a thinner version of the chinese phone that has been leaked already with possibly squarer edges.

We'll see how it goes but I'll probably sit this one out and see what the Note 3 or the S5 will have to offer. I just want something different as I've owned every Galaxy from the original S to the S3.

Heh well eitherway, I think the S4 will be a huge success, and probably even more than the S3.

Do you guys think people just learn to like the new products regardless of it's "flaws" or what other people may deem inappropriate? I kind of got that feeling with the S3 with some people, at first it wasn't that appealing, but after some time everybody was in love with it!

You've got to look at it from their point of view why would they want to drastically change the look of one of the best selling phones on the planet and take the risk it flopped when they can just pump out something pretty similar looking but with better specs.
