*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

What the hell HTC are voiding warranties for unlocked bootloaders now?! Wow that's so low, they just went down several notches in my books what a stupid decision.

If that is true then WTF are HTC thinking, didn't they promise that ALL bootloaders would be unlockable a while ago via their website?

Way to lose enthusiast customers, HTC...

It's always been the case as you can read for yourself here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader

Our devices have been designed with our hardware and software specifications in mind and unlocking the bootloader will change the software and may cause unexpected side effects. It is impossible for HTC to ensure the proper functioning of your device after this. In the worst case scenario, it is possible that your device may be physically damaged due to overheating or the behavior of your device might be altered including, but not limited to, hearing aid compatibility (HAC) and specific absorption rate (SAR) values.

Some content on your device may also be invalidated and cannot be accessed any more because of invalid DRM security keys. This includes content that you may have purchased through a 3rd party vendor and through HTC. Furthermore, although you will still be able to receive updates to your device via FOTA (“firmware over the air”), we do not guarantee that updating your device via FOTA will not render your device unusable. Please understand that you will not be able to return your device to the original state and going forward your device may not be held covered under the warranty for all claims resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader. HTC bears no responsibility if your device is no longer usable afterwards.

Bold emphasis added by me to highlight the bit that basically says you're on your own if you unlock the bootloader

It looks more or less the same, has a pointlessly high PPI for a screen which will probably look more or less the same and a faster processor to run the same OS as last years model for more or less the same user experience.

Pointlessly high ppi?

It's a 1080p screen, and thus 1080p content can be displayed on the nice big screen without scaling. The ppi is simply the result of the screen and resolution, and there is no harm whatsoever in it being so high. So no idea what your point was there.

As for the OS. that is Google releasing the new versions, not Samsung. How can they help it if no significant new version has been released?

EDIT - Actually the screen DOES have benefits over the SGS III, see the comparison here http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/14/sa...fore-the-unpacked-event-in-exhaustive-review/ ;)

What do Samsung, Sony and LG make of unlocked bootloaders? Never going back to O2 and their nigh impossible to unlock bootloaders.

Been watching some more hands on videos and is it just me or does the phone look a bit slow/laggy when opening some apps? Has there been any mention of the software being an early/beta version? (I know that it will be getting 4.2.2 when it comes to release time) Saying that, any problems etc. will probably be sorted out by the time it actually goes on sale.

They really have bloated touchwiz to the extreme now though, a lot of cool stuff (mainly the gesture & camera things) but an awful lot of useless/gimmicky crap (imo)

Also, I noticed that the dialer is black/blue themed in one video (in the chinese review, it is white themed), however, the settings background, email app etc. are white still. So not sure, perhaps there is a theme option for the apps or whatever i.e. "dark" or "light"......

It's still pre-release software apparently.

What is all this useless/gimmicky stuff you've found?

S health
s translate
group play
built in tweaked apps from the play store i.e. flipboard

Pretty much all of the stuff that was shown last night.

Essentially they have taken most of the good/popular apps from the play store (mainly google's stuff) and put them on their phone with their tweaks (for better or worse depending on how you look at it) and renamed them.

And in general from the apps that have been shown so far, they just look bloated/disorganised imo.

Only thing I like about the new touchwiz so far is the camera and new air touch/gesture and additional eye track stuff.

edit:

I am surprised that they didn't integrate this into touchwiz and give it their "s-" branding name and make it out like it was revolutionary!

Apple release an almost identical-looking phone to the last one with a faster processor and Retina display: "Oooh, Apple are so far ahead of the curve! *slobber slobber*"

Samsung release a new phone with roughly similar looks, even faster processor and better display: "Meh, all that stuff is pointless, why bother?"

What will you say if the ip5s has a higher PPI?

At that PPI you wont be able to resolve around 25% of the detail so why bother - you are just spanking the battery for no actual gain.

Haha yeah that sounds like Samsung. :D

Retina display was far ahead of the curve at the time and the jump from 3GS to 4 was massive if that's what you mean?

Apple are forever being accused of spec bumps - but they are honest: redesign followed by an S model. The S4 is the epitome of a lazy (and largely pointless) spec bump.

For the last 6 months we have heard how Samsung are now the leading edge of mobile device innovation and then they bring out the S4 with zero innovation. We now have endless articles of how the S4 is no threat to iPhone blah blah blah - its a fickle world and Samsung have just dropped a *******.

stop trolling just go away jeez :) people here want to discuss the device with proper open minded discussion not your fanboyish bluberish.

It is a result of the screen size and the resolution... the ppi was not the aim. I don't think you quite get the point.

Besides, there is grain in quality... check the screenshot I posted. It's equivalent to the extra details that Super AMOLED HD+ provides. As or battery drain, the scren euses new PHOLED tech which is easier than before. However, don't let facts get in the way of your moaning. :p

What will you say if the ip5s has a higher PPI?

If it serves no real purpose and it spanks the battery then I would say its just as lame - however we know that Apple doesn't chase spec's so if they did it then it would be for a specific reason.

Presumably a retina display iPad Mini would have a very high PPI but that would be to maintain the same res as existing iPad apps to avoid fragmentation of the app market which is fair enough.

I don't think you understand - why make it a 1080p screen if the human eye cant resolve 25% of that detail? Unless of course you look at it under a microscope? :D

Which part of "You can then display native 1080p content without scaling" is a difficult concept for you to grasp. ;)

You mean you want to circle jerk about your manufacturer of choices latest product and congratulate each other on how your loyalty has been rewarded with an iteration of last years product.

You claim to want open minded discussion and yet the slightest criticism and out comes the usual fanboy / troll comments.

Easily pleased. :)

What is the point of that though? Wouldn't a 25% lower res not show exactly the same image quality? Wouldn't the battery saving be more worth while?

Scaling might be important on a 55" screen but on 5" display? Really?
