Come on now. I've got a Galaxy S8+ but let's not be kidding ourselves here. That's at best a matter of opinion. At worst, it's wrong.

Let's all just get along with whatever phone we like, yeah? :)

Ok, so there's not a huge amount in it.

But an s8 can be had for around £500, the iPhone X is £1000.

The iPhone also lacks a headphone jack, iris scanner, fingerprint reader...

See my point?

Sort of. The price is absolutely a huge deal, no doubt about it. At £1k the iPhone X is not cheap at all. Still, by all accounts it's solid and gorgeous. I've not had one in my hand yet.

As for the other stuff, well headphone jacks are going no matter what people think. Better that everyone just gets used to that. Iris and fingerprint scanning are both moot thanks to Face ID, too. It's missing those two things because it has something that makes them pointless.

I'm more than happy with my S8+, but money no object and having no strong allegiance to Android? The iPhone X has to be the best smartphone on the market. The problem is those are two big asterisks.

Anyway, I didn't meant to derail the thread, sorry folks!

the iris scanner isnt all that tbh, there are still times when it's quicker for me to punch in a 5 digit security code than wait for the iris scanner to varify my identity. In fact I've just switched mine off.

both the S8 and the iP-X are absolutely brilliant. Personally it comes down purely to which ecosystem you are invested in. Cost is irrelevant, because if you're already invested in iOS then there's an almost certainty that the base price of the iP-X isnt going to be much of a concern anyway.

Both great phones, you could do a hell of a lot worse if you own either of them.

Well if people are paying the 1k just to stay in the apple ecosystem then apple really have got them by the short and curlies.

Personally I find the iris scanner superb and it's my log in system of choice. It's nice to have the fingerprint reader as backup and my banking app only supports fingerprint.

I like the iPhone X, it's a nice phone. It's what the iPhone should have been a year or so back though. Certainly not at the crazy price of £1000.

I have an iPhone 7 as a primary, but also have a Huawei Honor 7, and can see merits in both. They both have pros and cons.

Horses for courses though.

There isn’t much coming out on either side of the fence at the moment that is in any advancement on what we have already unfortunately. We hit a plateau regarding phone tech quite a while ago. It seems to be mostly rehashed specs.

I wonder what will be the next big break through ? (I’d probably say integrated fingerprint scanner under the screen)

Yes, we've definitely hit a plateau with mobile phones now. Smaller bezels and slightly faster internals seem to be about all we get now.

Certainly my biggest caveat with the s8 is the horrendous placement of the fingerprint reader. But with iris scanner being so good, I rarely use it now. Only for logging into my nationwide banking app.

Having it under the screen would be nice though.

And that's their choice. Your statement was less to do with the iP-x being expensive and more to do with it being inferior. It really isn't, it's just different (that is of course if you ignore the even better display, battery life, and power of the thing)

and horses for course. when i can tap a passcode in quicker than the iris scanner works, it makes it pretty useless for me.

Being inferior is a point of view, true.

I view it as inferior as it is missing a few key features.

But obviously it is a good phone. It's certainly the first apple phone in a few years that looks modern and with the times.

But a grand for a phone that is certainly no better than the s8 really is quite ridiculous.

Only apple could get away with that.

It's just a shame the Galaxy S8 doesn't have more memory because it does hurt it when it comes to multitasking.

Samsung could improve it by tweaking the software but we all know they won't.

Does the S8 do 4K 60 FPS video recording, or 1080P 240 FPS slow motion recording? Or have dual cameras?

There are things the X will do better and things some Android phones will do better.

This review is fairly well rounded and the Samsung Face/Iris unlock certainly don’t come close to Face ID based on those gifs

It has 4gb doesn't it? Surely that's plenty for a phone? What are you doing with it?

Bare in mind 600MB of that is reserved and the software gets very aggressive at killing applications when there is close to 600MB free, suddenly 4GB isn't looking like a lot.

All it takes is three applications to see the issue, Chrome, any large game and anything else and you will see games and web pages reloading when switching.

Taking a call and returning to a game or something you're writing only to see them restart and lose your progress/work is a real issue with this phone.

Just got my wife an S8, can anyone recommend a case or screen protector?

I've always had Spigen cases and recommend them fully.

I've tried 3 screen protectors on my S8 now, all of which were useless. Including the £40 one. So I've decided not to bother with one.
