*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

I spotted a reasonably priced OLED model but it was 40 miles away - I didn't want it that badly.

Someone near me just listed a 512gb LCD model with a 256gb SD card for £350.

Valve sell a 512GB LCD refurb model with a warranty for £319, a 256gb SD card is £18 for a Sandisk branded one.

I just cant bring myself to message them as I'd want to pay under £250 for it, probably closer to £200 given its used and off Facebook.

Loads of sellers seem to think 3rd party grip cases and other random accessories are adding a lot of value - they are not IMO.

Not used my steamdeck in ages, recently charged it up as it was completely dead and was greeted with a message on screen asking me to select from a backup (i think), there were about 3 or 4 different options, tried each one and it just rebooted to same screen, i left it and then a few days ago came back to it and there was no display at all, i could hear the fans spinning an it beeping on powering but absolutely nothing other than that. I've literally just connected it to my dock connected to tv and now I get a display as soon as I unplug it nothing, not sure how a display can just fail like that without been dropped etc but I guess thats whats happened? Any ideas of anything else to try?

I've not used mine for a while, busy with FO76 on my main rig.
I tried installing emudeck again, got it up and running but just don't get on with emulation, might pick up one of those gameboy clones with built in games which seems a waste but just 'works'

What issues are you having with EmuDeck? I installed it a good year and a half ago and found it straight forward even back then. Maybe it’s down to me just playing 16bit games which have really robust emulation.

Looks like they've finally got rid of their stocks of the 64gb and 512gb LCD models. On sale at 15% off, the 64gb would be just over £260, but all stock gone looks like.

No sale for the OLED. Maybe next time now they've finished with the old stock.
I'm still a little surprised. Not that I was going to upgrade from the original model.

Generic install guide I followed was simple enough, installed a bunch of things into my steam library that I can't be arsed to figure out which to use for what purpose (that's on me)
Couldn't get the auto import of roms to work.
Couldn't exit any games in desktop mode (had a Google and nothing short of powering off changed anything)

A mix of non intuitive-ness and lack of enthusiasm on my part I reckon. I've still got loads of games I've never finished so maybe adding hundreds of older ones would be a bad idea anyway :D

I bit the bullet and got a 512gb OLED 2nd hand for 100 less than new. It's from nov 2023 and still in warranty.

I really like it so far, funnily enough the desktop experience is also quite good imo. I need some fiddling with the touchpads but overall, I am very impressed.
Old classic games run great on it. Had a laugh to quickly play worms on it and apparently sim city 4 and pharaoh also run oin it. Obviously I already tried some easy roguelikes like Dead Cells, Hades and Vampire Survivors as well.

I immediately have no more use for some old laptops I have. The wifi 6 also makes a huge difference comapred to the LCD version I borrowed from mate last week to test (but I have 1gbps internet).

Battery life is great with limiting TDP, FPS and brightness, I think i can get 4-6 hrs of Civ 6 gameplay on it without a power bank :D.
Because of the low resolution, games actually run much better than expected.

Only thing I don't like is the 16:10 screen, so streaming ''non supported games'' e.g. like NFSU2 from pc means vertical stretching or further tinkering :(.
I think they should have kept 16:9 or 720p...

The colors of the screen are nice though and so are the blacks, the brightness is better then I expected! It feels great in the hand as well. Touch is surprisingly accurate. I do think it is to glossy though!
I am actually grabbing this quicker than starting steam link& wireless controllers on my tv's now as i like how it saves the state and 1 press of the button you're back where you were. I mean not shutting a game down on pc would have the same effect but somehow this feels easier to grab, play for 15 mins, and put it to sleep again.

Can't wait to install some old emu classics ( but I think OcUK us a bit anal about emulation discussion, but I have other forums for that :D ).

How the hell does the Deck run old Windows games like Sim City 4 better than my Windows pc?

My Windows PC often trips with changing resolutions: flashign screens, messing up desktop, poor performance, etc...
The Deck runs it better via Proton :o.

One things I can say for sure already, this is vastly superior to a bulky laptop, I tried gaming on it sometimes, streaming, or natively, on my work laptop (a decent Dell XPS with dedicated gpu and OLED screen). But it's just so cumbersome, poorer battery life when gaming, and a general hassle...
I've barely used my Deck for more than 2 hrs now, and already I think it is superior to Windows 11 ****.

I have a good gaming pc with a 4080S but I see myself using that less now, even though I already used my pc for streaming games to tv's for more than 80% of the time.

Gaming at a desk is just not something for me anymore, the only exceptions are sim (though cities skylines is playable on controllers) or rts games...

Ok the first cracks on Proton and the Steam Deck are appearing,

Pharaoh + Cleopatra, the intro plays but the screen stays black when it's supposed to show the main menu, but the music plays as if it loaded. It is suposedly playable according to steam but it isn't for me.
Audiosurf crashes on various points, impossible to start a game.

Wifi roaming is terrible, I have connected it to 1 AP, but it defaults to this one ( I have 3 routers/wifi AP's), instead of connecting to the better wifi 6 ones that are closer. I have crappy internet on my first floor because of this because it insists on connecting to an AP downstairs (I can see this because of the MAC-address).

The Arch/KDE wifi utilities are also total ****. I have no problems with Android, IOS and Windows, but this Arch/kde build is a PITA.
The wifi bandwidth also seems limited, on my phpne (Xiaomi 13) I have no problems reaching 950+ mbit on a speedtest, my 2018 ipad also has much better wifi 5 than the deck, the deck stays around 300 mbit when nearby and only 50 ish mbit further away, 50 mbit is unacceptibly slow imo.
One of my AP's supports 2400mbps over wifi 6, another 1600mbps and a third is only wifi 5 with 1200mbps, but the stupid Deck picks the wifi 5 AP instead that is further away. If you split it between 2.4/5ghz I have 6 AP's all with the same SSID...

I tried disconnecting/reconnecting/re-adding the wifi, but it keeps connecting to the wifi point it originally connected to.

P+C works fine with Proton 6.3-3 on the deck you then have to choose a controller option to use.
