***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

As long as I get 4ghz Ill be happy with it, only cost me under £100 brand new anyway!
Just have to wait for my P5K RMA which might take 3 weeks.
P5N-D until then which is the most useless clocking board ever

Won't be for a while yet, I'd guess we won't see the lower end E0's til end Oct/Nov time, first ones we see will prolly all be speed binned E8600's as well i'd guess.

So might be longer before we get good clocking ones. Suppose we'll have to wait and see.

OK people. Answers on a postcard to this one please:

Been trying to get 500 x 8.5 stable for the last couple of days with no luck.

I can Small FFT / Blend / Gromacs all day long at 490 x 8.5.

I can Small FFT / Gromacs all day long at 500 x 8.

But Blend always fails at some point within an hour, it might be 8mins it might be 50mins, but it will always error.

Now I know my mem is good for 1000Mhz (that's its stock speed for a start), I know the CPU is good for 4.25Ghz (tested on lower fsb).

I have tried with NB volts at everything from 1.45-1.6V and it is the same, and i've tried VTT from 1.15 - 1.4V.

How can 490 be solid, and yet anything over that on 8.5 will fail Blend.

Soooooo annoying, I will have 500 x 8.5 dammit

Have a look at the link in my sig. Although we ar'nt running the same mobo, a lot of the settings in my rig might apply to yours. One thing to keep in mind when you are at the 500+ fsb level is the buffer strengths and slew rates, ALL 45nm cpu's prefer thaes set to strong, it makes a huge difference in stability.

Just got a new Xeon shipped over from the states :D Older stepping Q745A784 and seems to be my best clocking wolfy yet! Temps seem awkward but they are still perfectly reasonable, perhaps the IHS is shaped oddly.

hi guys , built my first machine capable of overclocking, moved from an AMD64 3200 agp system with ddr ram to the below.

Asus PQ5 deluxe
E8400 cpu
artic freezer 7pro
ocz ddr2 6400 gold
antec 300 , with 3 additional hiper fans
4870 ati graphics

thanks to all your posts i found setting up and overclocking very straight forward.

is there anything I have done fundementally wrong.

Thanks Bowza

Ok looks like i got too happy too soon.

i can not run orthos blend (cpu & mem) at even stock settings.

any tips where i should start to improve my stabilty

Thanks

Bowza

thanks gurusan

Where way off, should have been 5,5,5,18
i had em set to 5,5,5,14

running for 10 mins now.

time to start overclocking again

Cooler Weather :D

Been waiting before I tried o'clocking my 8400 - CO revision.(Tuniq Tower Air Cooling, fan at mid - i.e. quiet setting)

Running on Asus P5K Premium - with 4gb Corsair DDR2 XMS2

VID : 1.1875

Temps at 3ghz per real temp = 25c@Idle 38c@load Volts per Cpu-z (auto in bios) 0.984-1.152 max

Did enjoy the simplest overclock I've ever attempted :D i.e. Set fsb to 400 cpu voltage in bios to 1.165 & Ram as DDR2 1066 - everything else left at auto. Booted and ... it flies :)

Ran Orthos for 15 min - no errors .Will run it for 1hr + at weekend to be sure but I'm already convinced that it'll be fine !

Temps per Real Temp as I type this 25c/28c. Under Orthos 39c for both cores (have noticed that my core temps do equalise after a few seconds under load)

Volts - Cpu-z says 1.120 when under load & 1.136 at idle - I found both these somewhat confusing as I did set Bios @ 1.165 .
I believe the general lower reading may be vdrop/vdroop ? is it at all worth worrying about ??

Overall I believe I've got a good chip - Am I right ?

Will be aiming for 4ghz in time - want to give this o'clock time to settle , and to know with certainty it's o'k ,before trying.

20% o'clock - much better than the Opty 185 I used to run out of which I could only get 7.5% :D:D
