** The Official WWDC 2011 Thread **

I wonder what they're going to do?

1. Desktopification of iOS (Like Honeycomb/QNX/webOS. Keeping the iPad/iPhone UI simple before anyone complains ;))
2. Continuing the iPadification of OSX (Like Windows 8)
3. Nothing and let others take a lead.

Apple have always made a big thing of the touchscreen interface not being suited to laptops - and I tend to agree.

Old marketing talk during the terrible 'windows tablet' era? It's utterly brilliant on the Asus Eeepad and once W8 is released most high end laptops will probably include a touchscreen. Will Apple really take a back seat?

What are the chances of...

11" MacBook Air running a iOS/OSX hybrid (iOS 5), touchscreen, amazing anti reflective 720p IPS, quadcore A5 chip, 2GB DDR3, 128GB flash, 12 hour+ battery life, £600.

Too soon?

Doubt it very much and good...I want a proper computer OS on it and have no interest in it being touch screen, doesn't appeal to me on a laptop at all, I'd rather use the amazing trackpads for everything.

I reckon the new Air will have a boost in battery life though! Well I'm assuming sandy bridge uses less wattage anyways.

With regard to the post above and the linked story, I can see Apple doing something like that, using an A5 or whatever in their laptops.

They liked using and adapting PowerPC CPU's to their own use, using an A-Chip in their computers isn't that far fetched.

Just look at Sony's NGP, it's got the quad variant of the ARM Cortex A9 processor, Apple's A5 is same but dual core.

The GPU is the quad variant (MP4) of PowerVR SGX543MP2 of whats in the iPad 2.

Those are some powerful mobile chips, we haven't got to the A15 cpu's yet!

What would kick ass is if Apple released the iPhone 5 with the same specs as Sony's NGP, it would just blow the competition away!

/end dream...

Samsung just shifted over 1 million Galaxy S II's in the first month of release (which was as many as they could make), and that is just one phone, there are at least a few other top end phones that (sales combined) would easily eclipse the iPhone sales.

Apple have sold 18.6 million iPhone 4s in the last 3 months alone (2011 Q2), and that's just one phone :p

Anyway, would like to see an iPhone 5 but I don't see it happening. Looking forward to iOS 5 anyway.

Apple won't be putting any such mobile chip in a laptop. Of course, something from an Apple lab that's never going to see the light of day in that form is now a rumour.

No touchscreens on laptops, it is terrible ergonomically and would somewhat undermine the iPad.

The low spec MBP is like twice the speed for £100, no brainer :(

Exactly. It really does not do much to dispel the idea that Apple products are overpriced and/or under spec.

But then given the similarity in pricing, perhaps they are trying to shift towards the 11" Air as the baseline Mac laptop. If they do indeed get a refresh, I can see many favouring them over the Macbook, if they can live with the smaller screen. Hell, I bet some do already.

Although Steve Jobs has said (and shown) that it would not be comfortable to use a touchscreen laptop, they only showed a conventional MB/MBP/MBA.

Most if not all touchscreen laptops on the market are swivel screen and I think apple (should they implement touchscreen) will go for the swivel screen approach (especially in the MBA) as it would then make a MB/MBP/MBA a much beefier ipad effectively.

Really? That is impressive if true, however that takes into account the fact it is being sold everywhere, the Galaxy S II is only in a few countries at the moment and Samsung seem to have a lazy manufacturing line :p

And of course the fact that, at the moment, its a much more popular phone!

Android has more market share but Apple is the one making all of the money, similar to the high end PC business. Using market share alone to judge success is a bit shortsighted.

Nobody is judging anyone, my original point is that the top end Android phones are becoming increasingly popular.

However, if Apple announce the iPhone 5 and iOS5 has a nice selection of new features then my Galaxy S II will be out the window! :p

Has any Android phone ever outsold a single iPhone model?

That won't happen, there's so many different Android handsets out there and a lot of them adhere to different price brackets.

Market share equals money, unless I'm missing something.

Of course Apple are making all the money themselves, they make the OS AND the hardware, they're getting all the profits.

Would be nice if backlit keyboard came back to the Air but I doubt it, next week will be good though E3 and WWDC.

Well if the Air gets a decent update, I may change my plans. Will be a fair way off yet anyway but I was intending on trying to save for an MBP. If I can stretch to it though, the 13" Air does seem to offer a few benefits for the extra cash. I have not so far filled 160gb on a netbook so storage is not a huge deal (though it may cause problems if I want to bootcamp it). Between 128gb onboard and any external storage, that might be enough. It is of course SSD and the screen is higher res. I also rarely use an optical drive on any windows rig. Portability is not as much of an issue but I figure the other pros may make it worth an extra £100 or so regardless.

I'd still like to see the bog standard MB updated though.

I'm going to be replacing my 13" MacBook with the Air, I have a 2010 MB but sandy bridge and SSD will make it quite the nice little upgrade for very little cost. :D Not buying it until October though when I'm in the US, just eager to see what they do with them.

Dual core phones have done what I felt what was always needed. They have taken web browsing to lightning quick speed. Battery life will be a huge selling point soon. Apple may not need to compare benchmark CPU scores if they can post a killer battery life. IPhone 4 already has agreat batterylife. They sshould go for a full 2 days

So an iphone 'killer' is not possible?

I think Google & the handset manufacturers would argue that they offer different combinations depending on need. In contrast Apple is one size fits all.

You might argue that one handset manufacturer's whole telephone line should be set against apple as a fair comparison.

The whole idea of an 'iPhone killer' is a non-starter.

People will *always* buy whatever they want, I highly doubt there will ever be an Android that does what *I* want from a phone.

Maybe Android will over time take the majority of the share but the iPhone will *never* be "killed".
