The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

ust orderd my 146 this morning, i hope its all its hyped up to be :)

Anyone recomend a good air cooler for it, on the Epox Mobo with a coolmaster 530 case wanna keep my new baby

I have heard good things about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, and at £18 you can't beat it for value.

Reading through this long thread I remember seeing a reference to a possible link between actual die numbers and overclockability ( Hey if Bouncebackability is a word then,......................)Hehehehe :D

Any one think there is truth in this rumour? Do the earlier batch numbers, e.g. the ones with a lower last 4 number on 3rd line on the Ihs (e.g. xxxxxxxxx0050) have a better chance of being clocked ?.
Irrespective of whether they are a CAYBE, CABNE, CABGE.

So a Cabge xxxxxxxxx0050 would overclock slightly better than a Cabge xxxxxxxxx1000 ???
Anyone got any data to support or discredit this theory ?

It seems feasible that you would get variance between different stages in the manufacturing run, it is almost imposible not to. All processes run to a tolerance, perhaps the tolerance was more loose during process start up - as billy had had a heavy night on the pop and forgot to crank lever X enough(Good thing for the consumer,if the process is attempting to clamp down / artificially limit the perfomance of a chip).

hmmm....somehow I always need high voltage to reach 3Ghz :| Im on my 3rd Opteron (2x144 before) and this 146 need 1.55v to stable at 3Ghz :(

Opteron 146 0540 FPMW
batch no. :0051

That's really unfortunate, mines a batch #0215 but apart from that identical. Just got back from a meal out and snooker, and it's SP2004 3.0GHz 1.45v (bios) for 4 hours 34 minutes and counting, will leave overnight. I'm very impressed so far, a lot better than the CAB2E 144 I had, but then again I knew these CABYE 146s were good.

So your batch being 200 lower than mine obviously doesn't make it a better chip, kind of puts one more piece of evidence against that theory (not that it totally rules it out).

I would like to see these vcore claims corroborated with a multimeter, as I very much suspect the vast majority of these readings are mildly optimistic! :D

I have had two Opterons that had identical steppings and the lower code was rubbish, same also happened with a couple of 0448 SPAW Winchesters I had previously.

Got mine running at 2.9ghz @ 1.45v on my ASRock 939-Dual SATA so i'm pretty pleased on that board, might reach 3.0ghz with a better cooler or a better board (Will boot to 3.0ghz, so i'm presuming a half decent voltage would make it stable, No point modding the board for a round number).

Yeh BABY!!!

I got one of the last 5 known opterons being sold from the "Stocked at supplier" place, just arrived, opened the box... and inside read...

CABYE 0540 FPMW

Yeeeh!

Orded mine monday,Just got home from work tonight to find my parcel had come this afternoon from the same supplier as you i believe, opened it and its a!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CABYE 0540FPMW :D :D :D :D

Im well chuffed just need to order the rest of my kit now.
Will be keeping a close eye on this thread for any info that helps me get a nice overclock, so keep your clock results & stuff coming in.

Thanks

jimmy

well i got one from them, arrived today. boots at 3Ghz but not S&M stable @ 1.55v (in bios) (3ghz)

but amazingly its sitting here @ 2.8Ghz on default volts (1.360) and S&M
stable (CPU-FPU) 100% load.

i think the shim is in bad contact with the core as the temps @ 1.55 are loading at 60 in S&M (3ghz)

peaks @ 55 with 2.8Ghz on default volts.

From my experience I would say that is about right for the good stepping Opterons, 2800MHz at stock volts Prime stable and then a hike to around 1.5ish for 3000MHz Prime stable.

Your temps are way off though, mine are mid 20s idle to 38~40C full load and thats at 3000MHz whilst Prime95ing......time to get the scalpel out and remove the IHS! :D

2.8Ghz is still a very nice overclock, I will be just as happy if mine reaches that and stable.

Is that water cooled or air ? If air what heatsink/fan are you using?

Thanks
jimmy

I have a CABNE 144 on a Ultra D with crappy ram ( well to be fair I have 1Gb corsair and 1Gb of geil value - my ballistix refuses to work even with newest bios) on stock voltage at 2.6Ghz, with a lil voltage and maybe adjusting the multi a little I hope to get 2.8ghz maybe, and if I invest in non stock cooler hopefully higher.

for sub £100 its a stunner imo

For another temp result for ya... this is on stock cooling... 2.8ghz stock volts 34\43 and at 2.9ghz 1.45v 39\49, gl with your clock :D , hoping to reach 3.0ghz with the SI-120

I got two 146 CAB2E one for myself and one for a mate, my one booted perfect at 3.ghz and is prime stable 1.5v now for over 5 hours +, and wow stable completed most of a dungeon called BWL.

My mate sadly pulled out on me for his cpu, but i couldnt hack it anymore so i put that one in and again 3.ghz same voltage, so there should be a nice 146 going on MM soon for a abit of cash for me :)

Man these opty's rock

ok a quick update on the above. took the shim off and surprise surprise, theres hardly any paste there. anyway now load is 39 degrees from 60 @ 3ghz in S&M and 1.45v
idle is down to 30 too.

just doing a burn in at the moment and will clock some more later :D

it was pretty easy to take off, i used a normal blade and a chisel to hold the shim up while chopping away at the silicone with the blade.
i made a custom shim with some wire tape to keep the core safe.
