The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

I am using the following board.

Epox EP-9NDA3+ nForce3 Ultra (Socket 939) Motherboard (MB-028-EP)

I am confident the board is not the problem as it could run my venice happily at 300*8

ok im trying to keep track of all this, seems a bit crazy to me  first off the price. a few months ago i got myself a amd64 4000+ but now your telling me i can pay £99 for a chip thats better, whats the catch.

Heres my rig what u recon i could o/c to ??

2gig Corsair DDR XMS4400
Epox EP-9NPA+ SLi
and watercooled :D

what u recon i could get? is it worth me upgrading?

There's no catch, the Opterons are a steal. If your 4000 clocks nicely I wouldn't bother changing.

Exact same board as me mate.

Try running memtest to just eliminate your RAM from the equation. I couldn't get mine stable at anything above 2.7ish - I found out it was my RAM not being compatible enough with each other, or something.

Having said that, I run out of volts at around 2.8GHz (Using the stock cooler). Though my chip goes in at 2.5GHz on stock volts <shrug>

Hi,got my opy 144 today CAB 2E
Have it running stable at 2.7 on air,x9@300fsb on asus a8n-e.
2gb twinmoss@266mhz divider 2.5,3,3,8
My previous cpu was 3500+ newcastle,at 2.7 on the opy it gives me another 300 on score with 3dmark5
Temps are 35 idle, load 54,had to pump the voltage up to 1.5 to get stable at 2.7,i assume this is a save voltage for this chip?

Heres a strange thing i noticed tho,at 2.8 i can play call of duty 2 with no probs, but when i load the menu for age of empires3 i get gfx errors right off, same with fear also.I think this is down to not being able to pump anymore voltages into the chip,1.55 is the most my asus will allow me to use for the opy144,if i could have upped it to 1.6 then i could def have got stable at 2.8 i think. All in all tho pretty happy to have got 2.7 without any hassles really.....

ive had a lot of problems getting my 146 stable 3.1ghz+ but found out why ;)
10x310 1.65V was failing occt & sp2004 in minutes yet 10x309 passed with 1.55V ram divider 180. tried 9x345 150 ram divider failed within minutes but passed with 140 divider, put it back to 10x310 with a 150 ram divider 1.6V and passed occt & 4 hours of sp2004
in other words, anything other 3ghz wont run for me with ram over 250mhz (even though it does 10x280 1:1) and now explains why both my 144's stopped dead @ 9x310
just thought it may help anyone else who hits a wall at certain ghz and raising the volts didnt help ;)

Ok I am a happy bunny, got my 144 to 300x9 at 1.5v on a 166 divider so memory is at spec. Not bad for a £99 CPU!!

Now I am GPU bound as I have a x800XT!!

Thanks for the feedback mate. The memory is currently only running at 167Mhz as I am udsing a low divider to try and eliminate this as a possible problem. Can it still be the memory even though after the divider it is running below stoc? I hope so as I am waiting for the postie to deliver my Balistix PC4000 :) .

Any other help would be much appreciated as I am really struggling to get 2.6 stable as I have just woken up to find prime failed after 3 hours and that is with 1.575v (bios) going through the chip.

OK, here's the best I can get, SP2004 stable etc, SuperPi 1m time is 34.5s.

144 @ 270x9, 1.53v according to mbm5.
2x512mb Ballistix PC4000 at 243mhz, 2.5,3,2,6 2.83v

Any tighter timings on the ram fails, running the RAM at 270 with slack timings and 3v fails.

Pushing the CPU past 270 also fails, had volts to 1.6v, not gone past that seeing as Im running the stock cooler.

This is all on a DFI NF4 Ultra-D, using a bios Minstadave recommended. It's made it possible to tighten the RAM timings, but now I can't use the lower dividers, just won't post properly. Think he had the same thing.

Oh, upped chipset and LDT by .1v too.

Any ideas for pushing further?

Cheers

Oliver. Pretty similair situation to me except I have the 146 and am limited to 2.55Ghz, Baillistix at 255 8,3,3,3 @. The CPU seems to have hit a ceiling which is odd given this stepping seemingly guaranteed 2.8Ghz. I am not complaining, still got a great value chip :) but I was expecting more. I am not giving up yet though. Gonna push the voltage a little bit whilst keeping a very close eye on temps. What should be my limit on Temp, 55?

Thanks Oliver, going to do more testing after going out shopping , hoping to get my Ballistix working along side my corsair.

Really hoping to hit the magic 3Ghz with judicial adjustment of cpu volts and ram ratio

crossing fingers and hoping - will be happpy with 2.8 - 2.9 though, pretty darn good for a 144 either way.

was using 704-2bta but now gone back to 623-3
i found out today, a couple of other people are having the same problem as me when they get to 3.1ghz+ so has to be the ram controller :(
it happened on both 144's, 9x309 stable & 9x310 wasnt but give up on them due to having the 146

edit: ive heard a few rumours that amd wont be selling the 939 opterons anymore through distribution/retail businesses. Apparently they don't like these chips being used by enthusiasts (i.e. - not for servers).
dont know if its true but it explains why no one has had stock for 2 weeks

pmsl @ rulocal & bog :p
i have to use a 150 ram divider to get 3.1ghz stable & prob 140 or 133 for 3.2ghz just a shame i have to loose mhz on the ram. it benches & plays COD2 np @ 3.2ghz but failing occt, just more tweaking and may get it stable :D

I hope someone can help me with this;

My ballistix is happy on its own, no problem with 318*9 being used in either pair of slots.

The problem is I cant use my other pairs of ram ( either Cosrair 2*512Mb XMS4400C25PT or Geil value) with the ballistix in either of the other slots, at any ratio or fsb!!! I realise any combo wont be an ideal match, but there is no reason why why this shouldnt work?

Can someone advise me what the 2T memory timings are, as on some reboots my mobo is automatically reverting to 1T timings even with 4 sticks - which I can appreciate wont work.

Looks like I have a good cpu here, currently got 1.7v thru it though which is way high I am sure, so going to throttle it back to the 1.55 region and see how far i can get.
