The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

Finally got into Windows at 3Ghz!

...only to BSOD after about 30secs of Prime :p any ideas on how to stabilise this now? Am using 1.50V+104% on the CPU, 1.30V LDT and 1.60V chipset... seems to be undervolting quite a bit though?!

Cheers,

Suman

1.6V+ seems a bit high :( I'm only running quiet air cooling (Zalman 7000AlCu) so don't really wanna gp much over 1.55V...

Do you reckon voltage is the problem?

i removed the IHS off the 146 CAB2E today and WOW does it make a difference

with IHS ......................... without IHS

temps were:
cpu - 35C idle & 51C load - pwmic 48C - gpu 31C
without the IHS on today & higher ambient
cpu - 33C idle & 38C load - pwmic 56C - gpu 40C

the paste under the IHS was naff, i had to use a stanley knife to get it off!!
at least i got 2 146's doing 3.1ghz stable now though :D

edit: just been offered a 148 CABNE 0528GPMW & cant wait :D

Hi, i have a 144 cabinet, was just wondering if its possible to put the IHS back on if you take it off? im cooling mine with an xp-120 so would feel safer with IHS on, but replacing the thermal gunk on the underside sounds like a nice idea, or do you think its overkill for Air cooling

EDIT: Here is the highest clock i got, but my memory is Geil Value ram pc3200 and i have 2 x 512 and 2x 1gb sticks so no the best for clockin.

Though i cannot seem to get my fsb up without prime not completing after a few mins. I have had my volts up to 1.550 in BIOS though hasnt made much of a difference. And BIOS fsb will not go higher than 300fsb.

What do you think is the main think holding me back? mobo? ram?

Your mobo is holding you back!
You are at about its limit there on the HTT.
I have the same and its happy as larry @ 275

Anymore and its not long term stable, can bench @ 288

but im 100% your mobo is at or near its limit!

Ive got an 0540 FPMW on an Asrock duel with 2*512mb ocz 4200 EL 166 mem divider. I could only get upto 270HTT then found out it was the bios. I flashed to a ocwb beta1 and it will go to 285 after rasing vcore to the max 1.45v. I knew there was more in the chip so I did the volt mod on the mobo and can get prime stable at 290. Anything above that fails prime at various stages even after ive pushed the vcore upto its max 1.55. It will run games benchies and 32meg super_pi no problem but prime isnt fuly stable. Max temp at load at 300HTT is 43deg so that isnt high at all. Not sure whats stopping this going higher and prime stable, tried both 1T and 2T both the same, keeping it at 285htt at 1.45v for now

Cheers mate, i did think my mobo was holding me back a bit. Suppose ill have to stick with it for a while, just a shame cos im sure my 146 could hit higher. Only thing is now im too tempted to upgrade mobo and G card (this week only) so i can hit 3ghz with processor. Must resisit...

Chopped my IHS of today too. Only a minor laceration to my finger ;)

Got some good temp drops too. Was sitting at 35/36C idle at 3GHz and now at 28/29C. Load has dropped from 49/50 to 44. Nice.
Time to get me a few more MHz! :)

you tried dropping the multi down to 8/9 ?

also lower the mem timings to 133and the htt to 400 or 600.

check out the ocwb beta2/3 bios's as well, think the beta2 is the better overclocking one.

8629 Points Opteron 146 @ 3.0GHz. 7800GTX 490/1300.

is it me a that score is a little low consider the Opty is at 3Ghz and GTX@490/1300? it should be well over 9k, isnt it?

These are the details and results so far on my Opteron 146:
Details of CPU:
OSA146DAA5BN
CABYE 0540FPMW
1341189J50100

As you can see, I am running the CPU at low Vcore levels and have not touched it yet, so far so good. I Prime stress tested it for 20 hours yesterday at 2.7Ghz with no problems and just bumped it up to 2.75 this morning and all is going well...
I am being a little carefull due to the fact that I am not a seasoned overclocker and am petrified of blowing the house up...:D But the results seem very good to me so far and I am blown away by how much performance gains I have got for such a great price! What a massive step up from my 3200 Winchester!

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated, thx.
