The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

Have now managed to keep stability with volts lowered from above 1.540v (1.4*110%) to 1.441v (1.275*113%).

Although sp2004 produces higher temps than occt it's still a cause for concern :( .

Akasa evo 120 ordered today along with a O/c 7800gt, this rig should fly when it's all up & running :D

thats because occt doesnt fully stress the cpu like prime or sp2004, occt is just a pre-stability check before running prime or sp2004 for 8 hours+

146 cabye 0540 FPMW image shows temps at just 2800mhz. Best compromise without better cooling is 2900mhz for 24/7 with load at 57c.
that is way too high, you will prob see 60C under load running prime & a oc cpu should be kept 50C or lower under load if you dont wanna loose it

This one will boot into windows @ 3080 but not 32mb pi stable and sp2004 small fft fails after 30 secs. Mainly I believe due to temps. The IHS has to come off .
removing the ihs wont make it stable or overclock further, it will only reduce temps

I appreciate your input tatts you have probably had more experience than most with Optys.

IHS removal would be to reduce temps as I just cannot safely increase voltage to produce a stable overclock without temps approaching 60c which is max tcase for these chips.

I can run 2750 at stock volts without errors in sp2004 but temps are still 52c load! This just proves that the xp120 is doing a good job, it must be a bad IHS contact with the chip.

Once I have removed the IHS and refitted with the Akasa evo 120 I will have another go and post back with the results. Until then i'm going to leave it at stock volts at 2750mhz. Big hardship eh!

which will allow you to safely run a higher vcore and increase the clock, so in that respect its worth doing.
but some remove it even when they have good temps thinking it will go higher, doesnt work that way. if your temps are high then yes it will reduce them & is worth doing allowing to push a little higher ;)

i got a new 148 today but i cant be bothered installing it as ive done too many lol

One for MM then eh Tatts ;)

Looking at all the posts recently, I am thinking my Opty 144 with 12 hours stable at 2.6GHz in PRIME95 @1.50V isn't a bad result [a 44% OC].
Just out of interest, my max load temp was 46Deg C using an AC Freezer 64 Pro.

Just can't wait to get the time to optimise the RAM so I can use the bugger :D

Hi Guys,

New stepping/date code to add today. Just received my 146, codes are CABNE 0544 EPMW 0023. Need to build the computer yet (will probably take the rest of this week). Will let you know when I have chance.

hi joust , what you getting on stock volts please

yup, but IzaLearnin isnt in that position, it seems his current temps are an issue that could be capping his max clock. I would be interested to see the results.

just a note on the general effects of using better cooling on ic's: I have noticed with my past agp x800xt pe and pci-e x850xt pe gfx cards you can simply replace the the stock cooler with an improved aftermarket one (I used the zalman flower on both) and even though the core voltage was still stock, I could run them artifact free at a slightly higher core clock, not much but the difference is there.

Evo 120 and 7800gt were waiting for me when I got home tonight :)

First time removing an IHS so spent 20 mins or so with a razor blade (well wrapped on the opposite blade!) slowly going around the edges with very slight pressure until finally it just popped up.

Cleaned up the chip applied as5 and started with the evo. I wanted to fit this with the fan above the cpu but the heatsink was catching the Karajan audio on the m/board so I have had to fit it with the fan under the cpu for now.

Results? not had much chance to test yet just put cpu back up to 2800 @ 1.45v Screenie is taken early in the run and temps have dropped 11c from the last screenie posted above with the same settings.

Well worth doing imo.

Will try pushing further with the o.c tomorrow and post back.

Edit: sp2004 now at 38 minutes temps 40c-41c :D

Hi Guys,

Got the computer built now and have been checking some overclocking. Max stable at stock vols has been 2.5GHz. I can get 2.6 stable at 1.45V, am working in windows at the moment at 2.7, but this fails prime 95 after 1 minute.

There maybe more, but I am struggling with setting the RAM correctly on my motherboard (Asus A8N SLI deluxe, Geil Value 1GB dual channel kit).

I going to try and lower the multiplier now and up the HTT to see if I can get the RAM running nearer to its DDR400 rating (only runs at approx DDR350 when at 2.6g).

Cheers

Joust

I've got the same board, use speedfan! Works just great.

I wouldnt like to remove the IHS... my temps dont go past 43c @ 2800 anyways ;) although they do jump up to 48c @ 2.9 with a fair bit more voltage

I've noticed the 'usage' on my Opty146 in windows is abnormally high compared to my old Barton, it sticks around 15/20% constantly. is there something i've forgot/missed out?

No, it should in theory be 0% as mine is at idle. You may have little programs in the background doing stuff you don't want them to be doing, could be harmless things in Windows or spyware, it's not the Opteron CPU. :)
