*** The OS X Lion Thread ***

Just went to donwload Lion only to find my 2006 macbook with its Core 2 Solo processor is not supported.

1st Epic fail for Apple from me! Saved me £20.99 though!

@Brian8bit

Well IMO theres 2 main things many Apple users will want:
Blu-ray support, as many Apple users just use there macbooks or imac to watch films and do similar basic tasks, as they're not good for much else because of the other points i made.

Theres no excuse for lack of USB 3.0, it's already becoming widely used and offers more than enough speed for most people. Thunderbolt is expensive, has little support, and is completely unnecessary for the average Apple user. It belongs on Mac Pro's for now and nothing else.

It's all comes down to control and making more money. Apple users want this stuff, Apple can implement this stuff, but they dont. Supporting Blu-Ray means less money from App Store downloads as they cant control Blu-Ray purchases. A very large chunk of Apples profit is from downloads as they take 30% on everything sold. A similar thing might happen with game downloads if they supported Flash on iOS (Flash Player is the most searched for term on Google for iPhone users). And support for USB 3.0 would mean many people could use existing cables/hardware/whatever and not have to buy new stuff and £40 Thunderbolt cables off Apple that probably costs £5 to make.

Not sure why it's getting so much hate, it feels very fresh and quick. It was £20.99.

Feels more like a big expansion pack.

I've updated via just downloading and installing, but how easy would it be to do a fresh install on my MacBook Pro?

is Plex working with Lion ??? will upgrade my iMac and MBP but will skip the Mini if plex is not working

Seemed to be working ok on the box I've updated to Lion, (even before updating Plex to 0.9.3.3 which was released yesterday with some supposed Lion fixes).

I think that there are supposedly a few niggles (I think I read that launching Plex from the menu button on the remote is currently broken for example) but it was playing back files fine for me.

I'm going to wait a while before updating my dedicated media Mac Mini though in case any issues crop up.

Anybody who remembers 10.1* 10.2 10.3 10.4 and 10.5 should be more than happy with how 10.7.0 has gone. Hell if you did an upgrade you should be doing a merry jig. I did an upgrade as a test and it's impressive and better than the 10.5 -> 10.6 upgrade. I'm going to try a clean install later but for most users I can't see a need.

As for issues yes there are going to be a few it is the first release and I am sure 10.7.1 will fix them but as for some of the design choices that Apple have made that people don't like well that's between you and Apple but they aren't going away. Thankfully for the moment you can turn some of it off or in the case of scroll bars on!

As for the guy posting about OS X not being a proper 'OS' well UNIX called and it would like a word.

Apple's epic fail for you not having a 64bit CPU? Come again?

Corrected :D

It's an active cable it has chips in it. Sure it doesn't cost $40 but it isn't as cheap to make as you, er, make out!

Well it's not OS XI is it? :D

Fresh install can be done from the Recovery Console. Just use Disk Utility to wipe your primary HDD (backup first!) and then select Re-Install OS X.

I think some sarcasm was obviously lost in translation ;)

Anyways, I guess this might be the start of me thinking of upgrading to a Macbook pro, as up till now there has been absolutely no need to do so!

This...

You can't expect them to keep supporting old kit, there has to be a cut off point and sadly Type_R you are on the wrong side

Edit: just seen above comment, I wouldn't say it is worth spending on a new machine just to get Lion, if you can make do with what you got then I wouldn't change it

How can you hate it so much? Jesus I swear most people should just stick to a PC with half their concerns. Lion is Macs Vista? Yeah right. For one its rock solid even for an initial release. Let alone what it'll be like at 10.7.2.
£20.99. That makes it the cheapest application to buy for its quality and mass of product per buck!

If you don't like the gestures. Disable them
If you don't like launchpad, don't use it.

Really don't understand how people can research this, download and run it then moan about it. Its featured in enough depth before you buy it.

How can I find out if my macbook pro can run lion ?

Its a MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2GHz) 2007

I'm running it on my 2007 Macbook Pro (2.2ghz Core2), works a charm. :)

Ok I installed Lion last night. I made the boot disk as explained on various websites but when I held down the option key and booted the only boot option was the harddrive

Assuming you're putting it onto a USB drive, did you set the drives partition to be GUID?
Won't be available as a boot drive otherwise.

I know, I genuinely laughed out loud at the 10.7 is Vista comments. ****ing hilarious.
