*** The OS X Lion Thread ***

I'm happy having paid £20.99 just for the speed improvements. I use iTunes daily and it's significantly faster/smoother i.e. less stress!

Got my free upgrade last night and I'm kind of wishing I hadn't bothered.

First, things I like about it:

+ Loving the new gestures. I might actually use Dashboard more now and the forward and back swipes that now show some of the previous/next page in Safari are cool.
+ Seems a little quicker overall than 10.6
+ New mail app is excellent

Things I don't like:

- Hate the new look of iCal. It doesn't fit with the rest of the UI at all. Same with the address book.
- The single colour icons in Finder is a step backwards
- I'm not keen on a lot of the default options (which obviously I can change) like hidden scroll bars and no open app indicators on the dock

Overall it's ok I guess, but I'm far from thrilled.

I'm really looking forward to it, people you should embrace your new cheese, don't be afraid to change.

Of course, I've not seen this new cheese yet so I can't comment on it properly.

I've made a little pictorial representation of what I can't do in Lion vs Snow Leopard (I'm now back in Snow Leopard). If someone can show me doing the same thing in Lion I'll consider going back, but until then.

OK here we have a pretty regular scenario for me - Internet open in my central Space, iTunes in the left, iPhoto in the right and my workspace in the top Space:

In the top Space I'm working on a Word document. Now, the problem is, I'm also working on a Powerpoint Presentation, using Finder and also using a bunch of journal articles in PDF format:

But that's not a problem with Exposé - I can quickly find navigate to what I want in two gestures (four finger swipe, click):

Overall, it feels sooooo good (note how easy it was to repeat the o :D) to be back on Snow Leopard.

Go to Mac App store, click Purchased 'tab', where lion says Installed, Option+Click and it will change to install, you can re-download that way, I'm going it now to make a DVD copy for a fresh install in the future (when I've bought an external HDD for Time Machine).

Was just gonna post this! Thanks anyway!

downloaded overnight and installed this morning whilst i was in the shower. immediate issue i noticed was that my citrix access gateway client was hogging the cpu at 100%. i've had to uninstall it for now, as the latest version didn't behave any differently. initial concern for the future - battery life. my battery indicator doesn't report time remaining anywhere near as abitious as it once did. other than that, i like it.

edit: i did think i had lost the plot with the scrolling gesture being the reverse of sl though!

My main interest in Lion is the encrypted Time Machine backups. Can anyone tell me if you can do this without needing File Vault enabled on the Mac as well?

Font issue is driving me nuts, small thing, but I do notice it - some of the regular fonts are stretched upwards and out of shape, like linux fonts. Doesn't affect bold or italics, so it looks like it's some antialiasing byproduct. In png below, to the left you'll see ebay page prices as seen in Snow Leo, on the right ebay fonts as seen in Lion, as you can see bold font is identical but regular font is wonky in Lion...

Bootcamp Installer just point black fails to find my XP Pro SP2 disc to continue the installation.

Now spent about 15 hours trying to get Bootcamp working and I'm at breaking point.

Anybody else having issues with page swipe (2 finger gesture). It works fine for me when switching between full screen applications and the desktop or the widgets etc, but it doesn't seem to work in safari.

I was kind of expecting it to be used to flick forward and back through pages, but instead the window just kinda jerks. Or am I mistaken and that gesture is actually used to flick between tabs?

Only played around with it for about 30 mins last night, but so far so good :)

I'm holding off for a while... never adopt new software on day 1.

Anyone know if Office 2011 and VMware Fusion still work fine?

One thing which I really hope they've put in Lion is system font sizes. On my HTPC with it set to 1920*1080 everything normal is too small to use when sat back on the sofa. Safari, Finder, etc. Obviously all the menus within Plex are fine as they're written in a chuffing big font, and 1080p video looks lush, but trying to do anything else is too small.
In Windows 7 you simply go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\ and you can chose overall font size (100%, 125%, 150%). The only way of making text bigger globally that I can find in Snow Leopard is to lower the resolution .

Anyone know if it's possible to get Exposé back on lion? :(

Not sure if it's just me but I prefer it to this new Mission Control thing

Nope... At the minute Spaces and Exposé have been combined into the (imo crippled) Mission Control :(. As a result, I'm back on SL.

I can't install windows/bootcamp

I installed Lion clean from the disk image i created from the download.

OSX Disk utility tells me i have only 2 partitions once i have used bootcamp to split the disk, however windows install tells me i have 4 partitions.

When trying to install windows it says it cannot be installed on a GPT disk. I suspect this is due to the recovery partitions that (must be?) hidden in OSX?

Any help would be appreciated. Google doesn't throw up any results yet

OK, i have now tried to wipe & reinstall Lion and this is my conclusion:

1) You can't install windows 7 to a GUID partition table (has to be MBR?)
2) In OSX disk utility (during install) You can change the partition table to MBR, but then you cant install Lion!

Therefore there is no way for Lion & Windows 7 to exist on the same hard drive?

This is because you can only use Windows 7 with Bootcamp from Snow Leopard (10.6) onwards
