*** The OS X Lion Thread ***

Quick question

I've noticed Frontrow no longer appears when I hit the menu button on my remote. The remote is still working as I can control iTunes etc with it, just pre-Lion obviously the menu button would launch Frontrow, now it doesn't

Anyone else seeing this?

There is no Frontrow in Lion.

Say whaaaaaaaaaaat?!

Really?! Why on earth did they get rid of it? It was great for when my housemate is in the living room and I can't use the Apple TV

Plus the interface was so much easier than iTunes and was perfect with the remote

FUUUUUUUU

Launchpad is for casuals. Spotlight and a hidden dock is where it's always been at.

The power is in the four finger thumb pinch gesture to access it. Just because you don't use spot light doesn't mean you are a 'casual' user. Same as, just because you don't use a terminal to launch your favourite text editor, doesn't make you any less of a shell scripting programmer.

For the record, as a user who only started using a macbook pro this year, i think it is an excellent release. I cannot believe how far ahead apple are with gesture based computing. Synaptics are starting to pick up the ball but their software is still a shambles. OSX Lion, as compared to windows 7, is much more 'fluid'.

As a hardcore PC gamer/mouse user I ditched a mouse in favour of the track pad on snow leopard, and they just made the gesture capabilities even better. Worth it.

Agree. Bit of an odd change that one, considering plenty of people still used it.

That's because its gone. You can recompile it from a Snow Leopard Retail disc if you grab these files:

Devil's advocate...

You cant get the Lion disc (officially) without having a previous version of Mac OS X though? Therefore, you need to have purchased a previous version of OS X, therefore its an upgrade :p

If you wait until August you can buy Lion on a USB stick from Apple retail stores. Making your point moot. :)

That is a terrible justification to use a feature.

Why?

It was brilliant for me, I have an AppleTV so use that mostly but the odd time I'm in bed and just want to watch a tv show or put some music on in the background, I use Frontrow.

For me, it had a brilliant and simple UI, worked perfectly and fit in with the rest of the OS which I liked

Why go out my way to use XBMC when for me, it doesn't offer that much more?

+1 would take plex over frontrow any day

edit: ok just installed Lion on my iMac and iTunes comes up with this straight away

tried to look it up on google and the apple forums but it comes up with nothing

edit 2: scratch that looking it up more its a visualizer that the misses has installed for her music

I've spent a bit more time with Lion now and my desire to reinstall SL is diminishing. I still hate some of the UI changes and I still think that Launchpad is pointless. Then I remembered I don't *have* to use it and have sucessfully managed to get on with my life :P

Why would you use front row when you could be using xbmc?

I only used it for the movie trailers as I don't buy/rent any films from iTunes. The point was a lot of people still found it very useful for their HTPC OOB needs (such as the Mac Mini).

Plex > XBMC anyway.

After using it for a couple of days now I am really liking Lion. It sure is fast, everything is just so snappy!
