*** The OS X Lion Thread ***

can anyone advise on the best way to upgrade my old macbook

it meets the spec for lion c2d 2 gig ram etc etc but i'm only on 10.5.8

can i just go to my local apple store buy a copy of lion for £30 or whatever it is and throw the disc in and reinstall?

No because there is currently no such thing as Lion on disc. The only way is to upgrade to 10.6.8 and then buy it through the app store.

10.6.8 guess thats snow leopard??

can i buy that in my local store do a fresh install off the disc then update to lion?

Yes 10.6.8 is the latest update of snow leopard. My MBP came with snow leopard (thankfully) and I claimed my free copy of lion via the app store. You can only upgrade to Lion from snow leopard. So yes buying snow leopard first, installing it, then installing Lion is the best way to go.

I wouldn't advise rushing to get Lion for the reasons I have posted further up the page in this thread. Before you upgrade you should be aware that as a .0 release of an OS, Lion is far from perfect. See here:https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

I have been reading on the interwebs about graphics problems relating to Lion. There seems to be quite a few people experiencing issues, mostly problems with discrete nvidia gpus. It is speculated these are driver issues.

Ohhh I was wondering if it was just my imagination with the odd graphical problem there. Im pretty sure iv overheated one of the nvidia gpu's in my mac (the 9400 I think too) with Lion which is odd...

Im on the 9600 (which iv broken before in SL anyway) and it does seem a slight improvement on the performance when doing things that need the graphics, mainly switching spaces or switching to games on other spaces.

Only thing thats really bugging me is Safari is really slow when stuff is going on at the same time, so playing FM and wanting to scroll a page is rather slow and stuttery

finally got a cheap Iomega 1tb Nas. For Time Machine on my MBP. I'm now backing everything up for the first time and it's taking forever. lol Once everythings safe I'll finally purchase Lion. Hope it's worth the moneiez :D

Only installed it yesterday and loving it so far. Time will tell if it is stable or not as I rarely turn off my Macbook Pro and never had any problems with Snow Leopard.

I've ended up going back to SL, due to my Nas won't work and more worringly my Apple time capsule won't work under Lion but works perfectly Under Snow leopard. So i'm gonna wait for Lion to be sorted properly.

Shame really. Lion's working great for most people.

You can try to install darwinports and use the native SMB but it's too much hassle for most Mac Users.

I've reinstalled SL done a backup then updated to Lion. Last time I did a clean install of Lion only, so hopefully should work this time. It's weird because it's works no problems with my Macbook that I've done a clean install on..

I haven't yet done my Macs, but we did one at work yesterday.

Needed a MacBook Pro so we sent someone with the company credit card to the Apple store. When I powered it up I found that it had come with Snow Leopard (yes, the MBP bought brand new in an Apple retail store yesterday ). Rung them up and got a link to download Lion for free. Then after the App Store had downloaded Lion (what a great use of my time waiting for a 3.5GB download on our filtered and throttled work network ) it said "installed"... rebooted it and nope, still Snow Leopard. Had a poke around and realised that it meant that it had "installed" the Lion Installer to the Applications folder. Installed it and then finally after a few hours was at the point where I had expected to have been when opening the box .

Lion itself seems alright... though all we had time to do before getting it out the door to one of our iOS developers was install Xcode and setup the full disk encryption!

With the full disk encryption, does anyone know what it's like if you install Windows under bootcamp? With the name "full disk" I'd guess that it encrypts the bootcamp partition too?

I've looked in here and can't seem to get launchpad allocated to a button. Does it work for you?

Yup have mine set to cmd + §

Are you clicking to the right of the word Show Launchpad? It doesn't work if you just double click on the description.

I powered down my Air running Lion last night and now the 3 finger gestures don't work :( I've tried turning them off and back on but that's not helped. Any ideas?

Edit: Tried a restart, that's cured it.

Hi guys,

is there a way of stopping Lion save every single app in its last state?

for e.g. Preview when I open it, it comes up with older images i opened like afew days ago really annoying.

any help would be good to turn this off, thanks.

nate, you're in the wrong place...

System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Launchpad & Dock.

It's there. You've shown the preferences for Mission Control.
