The Police Application Thread

Let us know how you get on. How did you manage to go on an observer shift?
I don't think Kent police allow it unfortunately. :(

I have to as part of my specials training, but most forces will allow you to do one if you go to a station and ask nicely.

i am simply asking if police hire people that have been to prison?

As far as I am aware, no. They can hire people who have a criminal record, depending on the age of the offence (I think it must be 10/15 years from the last offence) and depending on the nature of the offence (it must not have an element of dishonesty).

I applied at the very end of March 09. I will become an attested constable mid July 2010. It's not a quick processes, so be patient.

I was dreading this thread resurfacing. Just to add my story...

Passed PIRT
Passed Assessment Centre
Passed Medical
Passed Fitness
Passed Drugs Test
Passed Induction coursework (4 week course)
Failed Vetting

When asked why, they wouldn't say because of Data Protection

I wrote an appeal letter as I meet the home office recruitment criteria - no criminal record, no debt, no family history etc. Nothing.

Anyway, they responded a week later saying they cannot disclose the reasons and they "consider this the final correspondence". Oh and I am not eligible to reapply. Ever.

Now, my grandfather served in the SAS, which I didn't declare but that's the only thing I didn't declare on the security vetting form. Why bother? He doesn't live with us anymore.

Seriously messed up

That is a bit bizarre. Surely they must be able to tell due, ironically, due to the DPA?

CS does have to be targetted at the face to have an effect as well, though it causes problems for the mucal membranes such as inside the nose and throat as well as irritating the eyes. CAPTOR does not irritate the nose or throat.

The worst effect that I felt was in the inability to breath for a few seconds, it felt like I was being bear hugged. That was much more scary than the runny nose or eyes.

Just to update everyone; I attested last Wednesday and had my first shift on Saturday. It was a very quiet shift but I think the novelty of the uniform kept me interested long enough :D

Would very much like to be a special for 5/6 months and then depending on if I love/hate it either find another career or make myself available for becoming a regular constable poviding the position is available.

Don't expect any forces to be recruiting regulars for the next 2 years at least.
