Not surprising given amds lack of RT performance but would have expected less of a gap given vulkan generally does better with amd.....

Play it on your 4K screen then :p

Looks lovely on oled and in hdr but this just plays so much better when sat at desk with m+k!

Tbh this should be the perf gap in any hybrid RT game if we look at Port Royal average scores. I think 3080 is like 25% ahead of 6800xt and that is at 1440p so probably around 35% at 4k. But those games where the 3080 is like 70% ahead or it has double the perf while the 6800xt is only 2070 perf, have probably more "features" from Nvidia. :D
It is still bad for a card that costs basically the same as the 3080 though.

Considering its a two generations vs first generation I would have thought it be more. Looking at gameplay for 6800XT 4k maxed settings its very playable close to 80/100fps

Because the ray tracing in Doom is very minimal and so has a low cost which prevents testing actual ray tracing hardware differences.
As an example, if ray tracing takes 20% of the frame time, and the 3080 is 4x (400%) faster than the 6800XT, then the even if both GPUs were identical before RTX, then the the 3080 would only be 15% faster with RTX on.
Even if RTX takes 50% of the frame time, and keeping the same 4x factor, the 3080 would be 37.5% faster, and this is what we see in some RTC games.

To really see a big difference you would need to look at a path-tracer like quake 2 and mine-craft RTX.

Unfortunately this is AMD holding back performance a little, but at least AMD know ray tracing is the future with ray-tracing on all consoles and all PC GPUs. Next gen AMD will push much more RTX features, and if rumours are true tensor core equivalents. Then consumers can really enjoy a new GPU war.

Agreed, it keeps Nvidia ahead this gen....but barely!

It will allow an apples to apples comparison of performance and image quality, but at the same time it feels like a step backwards.
The power of DLSS and even TSR is the ability to get native image quality from a 1080p base image because information is accumulated across frames.

It is also the only way to get better than native image quality, because you can accumulate more information than a single native resolution frame, as with TAA. And the DL further pushes image quality.

RT reflections are realists not like those fake reflections we had before. :D

Are you serious? Anyone who has been frequenting this industry for the last while should already know that first person shooters more often than not use separate 1st and 3rd person animations and character models so what you see in 1st person is not necessarily what happens in the 3rd person game world.
