The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

I tried the A9 at the show yesterday and the EVF seemed a lot better than the A7RIII.

On paper they are both the same (in terms of dots not no blackout etc) but having used the A7RIII over the past weeks I really don't like the EVF and disappointed with the rear screen. The EVF on the A7RIII appears very pixelated/blocky especially with hair etc and very unnatural (it's better than the A7III which is just rubbish).

At the time I was comparing the A7RIII to the Z7 and the Z7 EVF and rear screen was a million times better. Later when I tried the A9 it was much closer to the Z7 quality (or at least it seemed to be).

I asked the Sony Rep about it but he just referred to the specs. Is there some setting on the A7RIII that I'm missing or is the A9 EVF just a better quality (on the A7RR III I've tried changing quality modes etc).

Reviews have generally praised the Z6/7's EVF though not sure why the A9 and A7Riii would be noticeably different as they share the same specs.

A9 (3.6m dots/OLED + 1.4m dots/TFT)
A7Riii (3.6m dots/OLED + 1.4m dots/TFT)
Z6 (3.6m dots/OLED + 1.4m dots/TFT)
A7iii (2.3m dots/OLED + 0.9m dots/TFT)

How rubbish we talking with the A7iii?

You got 120fps high quality setting switched on? If you have then the only diff between the A7iiiR and the A9 is that the A9 doesnt blank out during shots. They are both the same EVF though.

The A7iii is fine. Its only when you have used the A9 or A7R that you feel its lacking.

I was actually quite impressed with the Z7, I'll see how the next firmware goes and may swap my D850 for one but I'm reluctant to atm as the D850 is pretty much perfect for me apart from the weight now :(

Yeah that's why I was surprised, the only other difference I can now think of is that the A9 has an AA filter and maybe that is being reflected in the EVF but I doubt it.

The A7III EVF is terrible imo, maybe if you have not used any other EVF then it may seem OK but even comparing it to my X-T3 it is pretty bad.

Yeah pretty sure as even tried medium, will have another look later.

If I do go down this route, I am assuming it will be at least some sort of upgrade from my D5200 (both 0.9m dots). 120fps though......:D

Ignorance is bliss...I try NOT to get my hands on the A9 or A7R3 so all I know is the A73.

Love this! Haha.

Currently have the A7R. But recently finding it isn't coping well with moving subjects. Is always been a camera i used in extremely well lit areas or on a tripod.

Now i want a camera to cope better in low light so slower shutter speeds. Also the AF seems to be a bit hit or miss.

So A7III or A7RIII?
Tanning photos of the baby soon to be toddler, typical holiday photos and nature and landscape.
I do a fair bit of low light now though.

I doubt the drop to 24MP would bother me i don't crop as much as i used to, i also don't print above 10*8.

I've not used the A7R, however I will say the A7III is the best thing I've ever owned camera wise, and I plan on keeping it. I've got the attention span of a toddler when it comes to new tech, and even though I've had the '3 for a while we're still very much in our honey-moon period :)

Do you really need the extra MP? If not, the A7iii sounds the better choice - plus it's cheaper (have seen some for around £1600 for the body). Low light, AF tracking and a fast FPS to keep up with your kid sound like they all excel on the A7iii.

Body only can be had for £1500 easily, seems good value at that.
