The Tesla Thread

I guess alarming was a little bit much :p I have never had to reboot a normal car though - i get the tesla is far more complex but that sounds a little jaguar/landrover flakey to me!

I've certainly had to reboot the infotainment system on my Audi A6, Audi A4 and Skoda Kodiaq at least once in each of their ownership. Mainly either when it locked up or Bluetooth wouldn't connect.

A Tesla is basically a computer on wheels, it doesn't sound too far fetched to me tbh. But isn't the infotainment also your speedometer and generally all your controls for the car?

Yes you’d lose your speedo for a couple of mins but that’s it. I’m not sure what the big deal is. What car settings are you worried about not being able to adjust for a couple of mins?

Just because you can do it while driving, doesn’t mean you have to or should.

No one suggested that the person needed to do it while driving, they just said it’s possible if the need ever occurred.

It’s only the infotainment screen  not sure that needs the dramatic response. Surely it’s actually reassuring that the steering, brakes and accelerator are not not integrated so closely with the infotainment that they go down is it stops working?

Who said it happens all the time?

PS. I have most definitely had to ‘reboot’ a normal car, more than once. It was French so I’ll let your draw your own conclusions there :p

It’s the speedo…

i can do it in mine, 20sec reboot. As it’s a crappy “legacy automaker” it requires the car to be in P…

PS. congrats on the new Model 3, looks like you are now a fully fledged member of the Teslarati as there’s that telltale Musk of defence :cry:

Haha I would have said the same if it was a BMW or a Mercedes though. This conversation is just a bit of a storm in a teacup. :p

Losing the speedo for a min or two isn’t ideal, I completely agree but it’s not exactly catastrophic either. If you are rebooting it, you are choosing when to do it also. You could choose to pull over if you thought it was an issue.

I recall in the early days they had a lot of problems with random reboots, I agree that is a much bigger problem and never should have been released into the wild in that state.

At the end of the day when driving you should use your eyes and perception as the primary metric for how fast you are going and the speedo is there to confirm.

Mate you are on glue if you think human eye is the primary check of speed compared to the speedo. Especially in a fast EV? Maybe the tyre roar in Teslas helps.

I’m almost of the view the Speedo should be visible at all times as a legal requirement.

To be slightly fair - tell that to the people who designed the L405 range rover random reboot/freezing digital dash :D (Big range rover fan, but they are a bit flakey in these!)

First time my screen rebooted whilst driving was.... interesting.

I was doing 70mph on the motorway in cruise control at the time.

An experienced driver should really to be able to tell roughly how quickly they are going without looking at speedo.

Could I tell the difference between 29 and 31? No, of course not but I can certainly tell how roughly quickly I am going and change my speed without without having to constantly take my eyes off the road to check a speedo.

I'm obviously just too old school in my crazy train of thought that the speedo plus controls for the lights & wipers all need to be available 100% of the time that a car is in motion. :o

It's comparing apples with oranges a bit. Surely it's better that you CAN reset whilst moving (if needed) than not? ie What if the screen freezes but you're unable to stop safely?

I've had loads of stuff go wrong whilst driving older cars but the only option is to stop. I remember back in day my Mini's wiper blades wouldn't turn on but there was no hard shoulder available.

How do you even know you're stopped without a speedo indicating 0mph?
Obviously the world comes back into focus:cry:. Think I'm getting a few more clues either my car, tried messing around with the dashcam but noticed there's no icon for it, ever after formatting a hard drive. Did read a thread where someone was saying about the car not seeing usb devices correctly. I'm going to fit the squeaky door sorted then book another appointment. Got home tonight with a range of 28 miles left:eek::D. Trio computer seems far more accurate after the factory reset, looks like I'm averaging around 350w/mile so not too bad now, oh the fact that the distance when reversing in inches is bugging me:p.

So I had a call from the service centre, they're sending it back to the future body shop in the new year, for some more paint.

I've currently got COVID, so there's not much I can do about it anyway tbh.

I sync my calendar, so as long as my calendar is up to date the car automatically plots a route

How do you synch your calendar - I'm struggling to get this to work ....

Oh and my heated rear seats and steering wheel have appeared in the app today after collection on Tuesday :D
