The "Top Gear", Season 24/25/26 thread

The studio stuff is dire, there is no harmony between the 3 of them, it's bad. They need to stop trying to be funny with pre-programmed lines.

I liked the first episode. I only watched it after seeing the comments on here and was expecting it to be horrendous and awkward, but it was actually genuinely really good.

I don't know if some people are just impossible to please, or if they have ridiculously high expectations but A) these three have only just started working with each other let's give them a *bit* of a chance and B) people were bitching and moaning every week about the old Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May and they'd worked together for like 15 years.

Now to watch episode 2!

I don't think it is far off a reasonable continuation from old TG. Matt is good and quite funny, Chris is brilliantly silly. Rory is probably the weak link at the moment being a bit bland relatively.
The trouble is whether we want a TG that is nearly the same or something different. I think staying close to old TG is safest for the time being.
Andi.

When racing the two supercars up the mountain, was there any mention of using winter tyres? Judging by the look of the tyres a few times when stationary they look winter tyre shod so must have changed them prior to that challenge - wish they had said. Besides, I doubt either car would have made it without.

Good episode.

And of course they had winter tyres.

Yeah they definitely had winter tyres, but didn't mention it, no car would make it up without them.

Harris mentions in Extra Gear they had studded tyres on.

I think Matts laid back in the studio celeb interview bit because hes arguably a bigger star than anyone they've had on.

The other two are relative nobody's, meeting people they've only ever seen on TV before. Of course they're going to be awkward at the begging, they need a series or two to settle into there new place in the celeb hierarchy.

I enjoyed the show last night. I think the problem with the guys is that they're trying too hard to be like Clarkson and co. there are a few times during ep1 and 2 where they'll laugh at what the other has said when it just isn't funny, which results in those moments being a bit cringe. I think they'd trying to make that same chemistry most people love but it's just not quite working. During the lambo parts Matt was quite funny though, interestingly in the stuff where he didn't say anything - like the marriage or the one night stand quirk where he just looked goofy and towards the Lambo - that kind of thing is funny even if it is all scriped, but some of it is too obviously scripted and it just doesn't work as well.

I'm sure Clarkson and co. didn't have the chemistry they have now when they first started out either though so there's plenty of reason to be positive about them - they're all likeable imo which is a fundamental and basic foundation.

The thing I love about TG as well though is the editing and photography and sound usage, it really is first class. Those guys are very creative, clever and talented, nice to see that none of that has changed.

Yea think we need to give them a chance...they'll get there in the end.

Enjoyed last nights episode :)

Rory increasingly just seems like he is overcompensating on the main show - he was a much better fit for Extra Gear which suited his style. Chris is excellent in his element but really needs someone genuinely interesting to play off and/or to take more of the pressure off him in the main studio bits, etc. - which can't really just be Matt with the format they have. It would be almost criminal to lose him from the show as the stuff he does well really pulls the show up.
