The Touchpad Android thread

Ok, I finally managed to install the latest CM9 nightly, and I'm liking it despite it's quirks.

One thing I need to know is how I can stock the clock screen from showing up when I place it on the touchstone charger. This can be rather annoying especially when watching videos!

Question for you guys. I have my TP still at dual boot and can't even remember if I ever put ICS on it. I tend to always boot into WebOS as it does what I need it to do. I use it mostly for watching transcoded movies on KalemSoft Media player. Basically I have an app on my phone which wakes my HTPC from sleep, brings it to the login screen which is far enough for the Kalemsoft streamer to work and let me access shares on my NAS. I then stream through the HTPC to the TP.

Is there a similar program to KalemSoft out there for ICS? I use Splashtop a lot on it too but I know you can get that for Android. Is there anything not working well on the ICS port?

Well I have finally got round to sticking ICS on my touchpad and I have se say I'm pleasantly surprised. Couple of questions though (with more technical questions to come in the morning...)

How do I know what app in the play store is actually designed for tablets and what is not? For example the BBC news app is but the Guardian isn't (shame as the WebOS one was so good!)

How do I know games will run properly on the touchpad? Do they scale depending on the ability of the pad or...?

BBC iPlayer, the app doesn't appear to work, just links to the mobile version which needs flash, what's the best way of watching it, is it through the mobile site? I'm sure I remember there being a suggestion that the best way to view it on android tablets is using an iPad string in the web name?

I've also got loads of questions regarding getting the best battery life and clearing caches but I'll leave that til tomorrow (downloaded the latest nightly and just installed it)!

EDIT: Also what games and apps are good on it?

I'm in a similar boat to you, I've installed ICS and it's working but I'm still getting to grips with what does and doesn't work.

I managed to get the iPlayer working by installing a flash plugin. The official adobe one says it's no longer supported, but even so I installed it and appears to work.

As for games, I have no idea, but Android is supposed to have good emulation support. I guess a bluetooth controller would be handy also.

Finally, BS player is good for video playback, the free version does everything I need. :)

If you make any progress post it here as I'm still struggling to get little things working, such as when I put it on charge in the touchstone, it stops my currently playing video, very annoying and it doesn't so this on WebOS. :(

EDIT: As for recommended apps, I haven't installed that many, an ebook reader beginning with K (the name escapes me), pretty much a straight rip-off of iBooks, but I like it as it does what I want, which is read PDF and EPUB files.

Podcatcher is nice also, if a little over complicated for what it does.

Opera isn't bad either, it tends to crash a little less then the built browser.

Hi just got my touchpad back from HP thought I'd try Android however being a bit of a idiot I need a simple simon process, been looking at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGY4gpsDPD8 but it's 8 months old, is there a similar for the most up to date version without having to faff around all the time?

Thanks

The guide covers both upgrades and fresh installs. Use the latest stable/ nightly release as you see fit (im currently running the newest nightly on both/ brothers TP without any probs)

Im not sure if theres a way to tell if the apps are designed for tablet/ not but they do have a "Staff picks for tablets" section on google play store homepage.

BBC iPlayer- install flash from google play store and run through native browser.

Im using chrome as default browser as I find it much quicker/ simpler (apart from when watching iPlayer- doesnt work?). I recommend the live wallpapers from xllusion (free).

darnit, that means the touchpad is stuck on webos for me then, shame as it seems much more capable on Android! is it the video thats stopping it?

Android installs as a dual boot. You can just install that and use android, then boot back into WebOS when you need skype.

Just installed the latest nightly and am thoroughly impressed. I had my mind on a nexus 7 to try android but im glad i have tried it on the touchpad, might keep it now seems already much better than anything webOS has to offer.

Is there any list of recommended apps to have?

I'm late to the party :) but I got a 32g from MM and loving it.
I have installed CM9+nightlies with GooManager it makes things so easy.

Webos is very good and I like the way you can get rid of cards and I hope webos free will be out soon.
Till then I will stick to CM :)

Oh yeh..I only had the "www.palm.com/rom" come up once lmao.

I was having lots of issues with the wifi on a previous nightly but having updated the other night it's now rock steady 24/7 - before it would loose connection within 5-10 mins of being enabled!!

Can't wait to try out Jelly Bean!
