The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

SNIP

Take it you're on patch 1.07? It doesn't play well with 980Tis, and has some weird FPS inconsistencies. Hopefully the upcoming patch 1.08 fixes that.
1.07 straight up broke my game, and SLI scaling as well. Nothing worse than constant crashing and 40fps in areas with SLI 980Tis :(

Ah! not just me then ;)

Andi.

Looking to get this game and play it as soon as I get my new build set up however I would like to play it on full settings at 60 FPS. Do you think this is possible with my build as I'm seeing a lot of people having issues with 980 Ti? I am willing to wait until they've sorted out issues with it, if they're making it better as patches go on, am I better off waiting?

At 1080p? One 980Ti is more than sufficient.

The next patch will be arriving quite soon. Please check the list of changes below.

PERFORMANCE:
Overall improvements to performance, including some issues that may have been caused by 1.07.

UI:
[Japanese Only][PS4 Only] Fixes an issue where the background text of certain books would flicker.
Fixes an issue where part of the Kaer Morhen map would not display properly.

GAMEPLAY:
Fixes a rare issue where items would disappear from the stash.
Fixes a very rare issue which would cause Geralt to get stuck when trying to run.
The interaction pop-up will no longer appear on lootable objects that are empty.
Fixes an occasional glitch in one of the dwarf combat animations.
Heads chopped off during finishers will no longer disappear.
"Players can perform a roll just before landing to significantly reduce the damage caused by falling.
We've added a tutorial pop-up window explaining this to make it clearer."
In patch 1.07, the level requirements for certain items were scaled up, leaving some players stuck with only unusable gear. With patch 1.08, we are introducing the Wolven Hour potion. This potion will be available in everyone's inventory once they install the patch. It will reduce level requirements on all gear for a period of one hour. This will give players time to level up or find alternative equipment using the gear that was available to them in patch 1.05 but became unusable after patch 1.07. After one hour, the potion's effects will cease and the requirements for all gear will revert to their original, pre-potion values.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to compare their items with ones sold by merchants.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
Players will now be able to complete the Card Collector achievement.
Achievements are now working properly again and will be unlocked if players meet their requirements after installing this patch (PC version).

GRAPHICS:
Fixes an issue where interiors would sometimes not display properly on the minimap.
Fixes an issue where certain world elements would sometimes be missing and noticeable visual glitches would be present while in Novigrad.

QUEST:
Fixes an issue where players were unable to finish the "It Takes Three to Tango" quest, even though they had obtained wine at the Kingfisher.
Fixes an issue where Geralt would sometimes die after traveling to Velen in the quest "Something Ends, Something Begins."
The entrance to the area where the Sunstone is obtained will no longer be blocked off if the player exits it prematurely during "The Sunstone" quest.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to complete the "Get Junior" quest on certain occasions.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to finish the "Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear" quest due to a closed gate.
Fixes an issue where some players were unable to investigate rooms during the "Family Matters" quest, effectively blocking their progression.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to finish the "Hey, You Wanna Look at my Stuff?" quest.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to talk to Roche during the "An Eye for an Eye" quest.
Fixes an issue where Roche would stay at his camp instead of going to the Oxenfurt Bridge in the "Get Junior" quest.
Fixes an issue where, under certain circumstances, Yennefer would not appear in Oxenfurt during the "The Great Escape" quest.
Drowners will have a harder time killing Nidas during the "Black Pearl" quest.
Fixes an issue which led to an infinite loading screen during the "To Bait a Forktail..." quest under certain circumstances.
Fixes a rare issue where the basement was locked during the "King's Gambit" quest.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to free the merchant during the Person in Distress event in the Claywich area.
The trolls at the Circle of Elements will no longer attack Geralt if he opts for a peaceful resolution.
Fixes an issue where players were unable to talk to Roche during the "Brothers in Arms" quest.
Fixes an issue where Zoltan's card was unobtainable.

GENERAL:
Preparatory features paving the way for the introduction of New Game + in the future.

If I want an RPG with a focus on dungeons, crafting and itemisation I'd play an MMO like WoW.

None of the Dragon Age games excelled at that, and personally for an RPG story and quests are what are important to me. Witcher 3 combat is also great, and while itemisation is a mess if I want that once again an MMO offers even more.

The Baldur's Gate series are still my favourite RPGs, and going to what you want in and RPG they'd be mediocre and lacking as well, despite being the most engaging games around primarily because of their story and quests.

It's why I and and many like the Witcher 3, it has the depth we want from the classics with upto date amazing graphics, decent combat and has very detailed characters and development for them spanning several games and books.

I liked Dragon Age Origins, but it failed to be a BG spiritual successor like they wanted. Two was an insult to Origin fans, and I've not even bothered with DA:I after Bioware has been flip flopping on their games. They simply don't make games that appeal to me anymore sadly.
I'm sure for many it's fantastic, but I'll hold the Witcher series well above what I've experienced with the Dragon Age so far, primarily because it has depth where I want it. Story and characters.

Quite interesting the difference in what people want from RPG's. :)

I tend to skip most of the dialogue, find it tedious. I want adventure and dungeons, epic fights, epic loot, decent combat mechanics are a must, I want to level to bad ass proportions. Mostly why I couldn't get into Witcher 1 and 2, the actual game play was poor. Witcher 3 is a vast improvement in that area but still falls quite short imo.

Enjoyed all the DA games more. (Though still enjoyed Witcher 3 as far as it went)

Those patch notes don't mention anything about optimisation sadly :(

And for others running the game with FPS issues on the 980ti. Aces, sigh of relief.

To me that shows it'll hopefully fix the issues we've been having. I'm so glad I got the game through GOG and I don't have patches forced on me, and I can use previous versions if the new ones mess things up.
All in all though, the issues shouldn't have even been introduced in the first place.

Oh gawd! Sounds more like Diablo 3 would suit you, all gear, levels and all that with no story or dialogue really.

If you take away the story and quests, then I feel you're left with nothing that really makes an RPG an RPG :(
Planescape Torment, Baldur's gate, Neverwinter, NWN, Arcanum, Divinity, Temple of Elemental Evil, and many others would be useless then. :(

I'm so glad the genre is big and it caters to so many otherwise we'd all have horrible times. :D

That potion to decrease gear level requirement is funny, but I can see why they made it. I'm probably in a minority that carries a few powerful relic swords, so when I couldn't wear my Enhanced Feline set anymore it didn't really make a difference. Playing on Death March as well.

Nice one

Does anyone else find the controls really clunky at times? Especially jumping. It seems there are some things you are allowed to jump up or onto but there are others that you can't, even if they're much lower!

It's also really annoying if you you need to jump during a fight. Nope can't do that.

Have had enough of this game tbh - there is a lot that is great about it, but the recent patches have increasingly broken it. Loaded up today to find they have changed the level requirement of the armour I was wearing - so I now have no armour. Refund request sent to Steam - maybe I will pick it up one day when they have fixed the game.

I agree, not saying I want no story and quests(they are essential to the genre), just want all that stuff to be good and I feel that some elements of Witcher 3 are not that great. Makes it a 7 or 8 out of 10 for me rather than a GOTY. :)

As a bit of a completionist I'm completely burned out from content overload. I stopped reading any text a long time ago in an effort to grind through a backlog of quests but I've stopped completely now after admitting I'm just not enjoying it that much.

It doesn't help that a good portion of quests don't give any XP due to being too low level.

Gotta disagree with a few folk, this is definitely game of the year for me and at least 9/10 with the minor gripe for me being the constant patches which end up making things worse at times.

Agree. If I play a better game this year I'll be surprised but very happy.

Oh my, that was introduced with Patch 1.07 some time ago.

With 1.08 coming out now they're addressing that in the stupidest way possible, a potion that for 1 hour lowers the Witcher gear level back to what it was. Just 1 hour, it's so you can scrounge for some replacements.

Both ideas were terrible, it means you unlock the final armour just as you're about to finish the game level wise. So unless you intend on replaying when New Game + mode is out the final gear is useless.

No idea why they bothered with that. It was aggravating enough having the Wolven gear which started at level 14 only be accessible after a level 19 quest line. The solution? Bump up all the witcher gear levels.

I really like the game, but like many agree that some patches are just bonkers, and sometimes downright game breaking.

Yep, my game of the year, with Dying Light a close second.

Trouble is, after playing Witcher 3, other games just seem so...old fashioned now.

Finally killed the griffin tonight after a couple of attempts. A short while later, when I'm getting question before meeting the King, I was left wondering if I was missing out having not played the previous two in the series as the questions seem to relate to previous events I had no idea about.

Yes, those questions are there for people who played Witcher 2 and did not have saves to import. You could have chosen when starting new game for the game to decide this stuff for you.
I would recommend you to ideally play the previous game (or the best, read all the books and play both games :)), or at least read some summary or watch some retrospective videos..but that way you will miss out on one of the best games ever made in Witcher 2.

Two 980 Ti's even only at 1080p?

980Ti is fine for max details at 1080p. 970 is fine too with foliage distance lowered to high and hairworks disabled.

Quite interesting the difference in what people want from RPG's. :)

Oh for F sake. Witcher 3 has the best written, most natural sounding dialogue since...forever ? Only few games in history were written at similarly high quality - Planescape Torment, Vampire Bloodlines, Fallout New Vegas, Witcher 2. Skipping it just does complete disservice to the game. I understand people liking different things, but reading this still makes me just sad.

Funny how two best games of the year are Polish, huh ?
I agree, for me best games this year are Witcher 3, followed by GTA V and Dying Light. Can't wait for expansions to all three.
And I am going through the same thing. Finished TW3 almost two months ago, but have no desire to play anything else. Tried out Dragon Age 3, which I had to uninstall after two hours, couldn't take the generic..everything. So I am reading Sapkowski's Hussite trilogy books now instead :D
