The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I've just gone past 100 hours on this and have never locked on to a target, got to admit that I just swing my sword and hope for the best, very little tactics. I only recently learnt to parry and still have only used that is boxing matches.

Anyway, I had my first laugh out loud in a while when Geralt told Lambert his limerick. Not quoted here just un case but google it if you want a reminder.

How does this run on a 7970 3GB at 1080p? I'm finally thinking of picking this up and not sure whether it's time to accept I might have a better experience on the PS4 compared to my GPU...

I have 8GB of 2133MHz RAM and a 4770K at 4.5GHz so that should be fine.

It will look better & play better than your PS4. If you want 60fps you will have to sacrifice some settings but for reference - I run most most settings maxed & still get 30fps+ at 1440p with my clocked 7950 boost.

Main issue with PS4 are the terrible loading times and slow pop-in of NPCs in busy areas. If you've got an SSD then definitely stick to the PC. Should give much better performance anyway with a 7970.

A bit late to the party with this one.

I played for a few hours and I just cannot get into the combat system.

I dislike having to lock to one target and be re-active to their attacks instead of pro-actively attacking.

Is it like this all the way through or does it open up somewhat oncce you unlock more traits and feats?

You don't HAVE to lock onto a target, in fact I may have done it about 6 times in my entire 150 hour play through.

You can swing your sword when you want and at what you want, in fact I'd advise it. But as far as being 'pro-active', sure, you can play aggressively and it can work well, but other times it will result in you being beaten to a pulp.

I find the combat simply means you have to think a bit, rather then just mashing attack buttons. Not to everyone's taste mind you but its not nearly as restrictive as you seem to be finding it.

Yeah, I've not used the lock function- I can't really see the point as most battles are against multiple enemies, so you need to direct quick attacks/signs in various directions in order to keep them from crowding you.

As mentioned though, it doesn't help to button-mash (although sometimes it's hard not to)... Geralt seems to queue up attack keypresses, so it's worth taking a considered approach.

What's happening with the expansion packs? I tried starting over but the cutscenes are a total chore 2nd time round. I could do with continuing with my character through new content.

That's good to know. I'll have to give it a bit more time and see how I fair with it.

Do you guys use a controller or M&K?

Mouse and keyboard, I am terrible with controllers.

But yeah hopefully you'll find a style that suits you as I find this game does let you experiment a little more with combat style then say a Dragon Age (nothing against the game, just the combat is a little 1 dimensional)

I could be wrong but the first one is due out in Oct. Only 10hr of content tho.

The second one due out next year is I think they said the size of the Witcher 2.

Mine runs ok on high settings not checked the FPS but runs smooth enough. Dying a lot lately, not that far in any tips for fighting large groups?

Easier said then done but don't let yourself get surrounded, there is no shame in pulling back and trying to spread the group out, then you can try and pick them off in 1's and 2's.

If your struggling to separate groups out use Yrden, but don't go for the one's that get caught (unless their spectres) pull the one's that don't further away so you can deal with them.

Bombs, I love bombs, even if you don't bother with the alchemy tree don't ignore how useful these are. Even if they don't do much damage (which they can) the effects and crowed control will still help.

Just stick with it (early on can be tough with a low HP pool, lack of upgraded signs or potions and relatively poor armor) and try to get your head around that while Geralt is a badass, he's not a superhero. Not getting hit and taking 30 seconds to kill a monster is always going to be better then getting hit 5 times and killing it in a few seconds.

Thanks for the tips Payne, will give it a try and hopefully not die..:) Only tihng that annoys me in this game is when you die from a big fight yourt aken back quite a lot and have to skip the cinematic over and over.

edit: also how do you block/parry attacks? not played this in ages so have forgotten!

I generally don’t parry/block monsters, its possible (I’m sure I’ve done it) but it’s really hard to time properly and I’m not sure it works on every type.
Parrying works well against humans, especially in fist fights, and with a mouse and keyboard you just right mouse button click when they have started their swing/punch, takes a little getting used to.

To block just hold down the right mouse button, (don’t try and block big two handed weapons) but I think it will only block things in about a 90% forward facing arc?. But really side step is your best friend, lets you quickly dodge a short distance and get a quick attack in(or heavy attack if it’s a slower enemy), alt + direction you want to go I think.

Also (again not everyone’s cup of tea) reading all the codex’s about monsters really does help, rather than just a nice bit of lore it lets you know what monsters are weak too and tactics, and using the right oils and signs against the right monster can change a hulking fiend into nothing more than then a bit of sword swinging practice.
