The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

A quick question regarding the best 'control' method.

I assume it is not possible to play by just using the mouse alone, and I am not very good at remembering keyboard key combinations!

Presumably a gamepad can be picked up quite cheaply, although I would prefer a wireless one.... would an Official Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows - Black (PC) be OK?

Thanks. :)

I use the 360 Wireless Pad and it works perfectly fine for Witcher.

Wireless Xbox One pad, previously the wireless 360 pad. Both iterations have been sublime in game.

Menu system can be a pain sometimes though.

Thanks for all the tips guys! (there is a lot more to this game than I originally thought!)

Will definitely give it a go with a 360 pad though - combat seems very awkward with the keyboard and mouse!

Looting-wise, can you pretty much take anything that's on offer without consequences? I've been in a few buildings and have not noticed anyone getting upset that I'm basically robbing them right in front of their eyes!?!?

Also, if you pick up a "side quest" from a random NPC, where does it show up? (I'm pressing "V" to cycle through the main quest leads but can't see anything for a small quest I accepted to find a black box on a cart from a guy at the side of the road!?!?

Looting wise: do not loot in front of soldiers. If you don't escape, you are more likely to get beaten up and find you have lost money when you wake up. :D

You have sub sections for missions:

Main Mission.
Secondary Missions.
Witcher Contracts.
Treasure Hunts.

Save regularly, is my biggest tip.

Oh yes, save, I've got hundreds of saves! The auto save function is DAMN good and you can even adjust the length of time between the auto saves which is just a damn good idea.

indeed set mine to 2 Mins.

theirs been countless times, ive died stupidly that saves, save me :D

my auto loot works fine.
im using
http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/315/?

& have mapped it to A when ever i sprint it loots, even on Horse :)

you need to add the exploration to the file. & ensure you pick the right name for the button.

Mines like IK_A_CROSS =

Yes thats the one i'm using, this is the line in my input.settings file under [Exploration]
IK_A=(Action=AutoLootRadius)

And all pressing A does is open and close the quick menu items on screen. Doesnt loot anything. Ive tried other keys and IK_F12 for the function keys, but nothing works.

How are people playing this game - is it a keyboard and mouse job or is it better played with a gamepad?

Also, are there any advantages to having it on Steam as opposed to GoG? The Steam price seems crazy in comparison (especially now the Steam sale has gone!)

Personally I used keyboard and mouse and was happy with that

I see no reason to pay extra for steam, unless you care about steam achievements or having all your games on steam, but I'm no longer willing to pay the premium. GoG works very nicely.

You did set the file to read only afterwards?
Might want to try that

Won a copy of this game on PB not yet added to my steam do you have to play the first 2 to understand the 3rd? or just play and enjoy it.

Just play and enjoy, if you do wish to catch up with the story then there are a few catch up videos on YouTube if you dont wish to play the 2 previous games (I only players witcher 2, not played 1 yet)

Man I'm hooked on this, i've got to go to bed now but i want to keep playing....got to level 30, 100%'d velen/novigrad at least as much as i can up to this point....off to the big tree place in the story next :D Can't believe how insanely good the story way around the bit before this though!

I may have just uploaded 49 screenshots... And I'm only at the start.

One of, if not thee best looking game to come out in 2015. [Yet Fallout 4 has higher requirements for recommended :S]

Their Engine is terribly coded & they do not put any polish in to their games Forget Optimization before release. Bethesda are the Ubisoft of the RPG Creators.

*mr Sheen references Mr sheen (http://www.cleanup.co.uk/Images/551561-Mr-Sheen.jpg)

You might think i'm wrong but lets look at their history.

Skyrim - Terribly coded at launch PS4/Xbox could not even play their games on a closed platform. Friends often said
"if you look over the bugs its a good game", I played this game & their was soo many bugs. 0 Mr sheen here.

Fallout - People buy Fallout, for Fallout. But as already seen Fallout 4 has many bugs so much so google documents them "18 Common Fallout 4 Problems & How to Fix Them"
No Mr Sheen Here

Rage - Lets just leave it their? Texture popping simulator at launch No Mr Sheen here

Brink - Great idea Very buggy again. No Mr Sheen

i'm not saying Witcher 1-3 Is perfect, Witcher 2 had its issues, but CD Projekcts Recoded the game engine & released a Free 10GB patch to fix Performance issues & gave away free content.

Witcher 3. is from a much smaller company than fallout 4, Yet works so much better 99% mr Sheen. i've only seen 2 bugs in 170 Hours.

1. Walking in the air.
2. NPC couldnt talk to.

compare this Fallout 4:
1. Guns disappear
2. save corrupt
3. option settings not saving
4. character stuck
5. pip boy app issues
6. sound issues
7. Video Bluring

You know that it's possible to like a game without bashing another right?

Both games are excellent imho.

I agree with you, you can enjoy all games without bashing if fallout was not a good game it would not have good reviews.

However do feel that fallout lacks the polish witcher. Its doesn't make it bad but not as good for me

While I agree with a lot of the Fallout 4 comments (even though its still quite a good game), especially those about the dated engine. Lets be fair though, Witcher 3 was littered with bugs and it took numerous patches before most of them were gone.

And I loved Witcher 3, GOTY for me, but gotta be honest.

Loving it so far - just hasn't felt like an endless succession of fetch/kill missions. Feels more varied. Characters have motivations and stories that are worth listening to.

If I had any criticisms it would be that the voice acting is just slightly too slow. I can read the text before they finish speaking by a large margin. Just slightly more urgency.

Also the crafting system is too complex. I need monster tissue powder. I have any number of bits and pieces but there is no easy way to see what I have to disassemble to get it.

Tiny tiny issues though !

Plus CD-Project have such a refreshing attitude to treating their fan base right.

Obviously, I disagree that Fallout 4 is excellent or in any way as good as Witcher 3. While it is possible to like and praise one game without bashing another, in this case, the person I was replying talked about Fallout boring him. I offered my opinion, since I played both games extensively (140 hours in F4 doing all the quests I found and finishing it, and 240 hours in Witcher 3, doing the same).

It is not a coincidence that Fallout 4 is the lowest rated Bethesda game since 2002 and doesn't win any notable GOTY awards. It took everything excellent about New Vegas (roleplay, choices and consequences, dialogue system, good writing..) and chucked it out the window in favour of "KILL LOOT RETURN" style fetch quests.

Now, this does not mean everyone must dislike it. I liked Fallout 4 too! Otherwise I would not have played it for 140 hours. But I only liked it for atmosphere and exploration. Everything else that was excellent about the franchise was missing or poor in this one.

Meanwhile, Witcher 3 took everything excellent about Witcher 2 and turned the notch up to eleven.
