The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Cheers, any hints and tips for a first timer ;)

I would say uncover as many of the ? marked at white orchard as you can, it will really help with gaining gear, leveling up and getting used to the combat.
When facing multiple enemies use the dodge/roll and shield ability.
When on low heath, meditate for an hour which will refill your health bar.

White Orchid
- Do as many ? & side quests as you can before doing main missions. it will help a lot

General
- Take your time & explore
- im on my 3rd playthrough (currently Deathmatch & yet still not seen everything)
- Use Quen in every fight
- The general Combat rule on Witcher is attack twice then move away unless they have no stamina.
- People with shields use Axii or dodge left/right to get behind them.

Make sure to disable point of interest markers on the map after you leave White Orchard, keep it enabled there and explore them all. Enable alternative movement response (both in menu). Oh and disable fish eye effect on witcher sense if it bothers you. Many people complain about it and do not even check the menu to see it can be disabled.

Take your time, do not rush, read journal and bestiaries, use full scope of tools in combat (signs, bombs, dodge, roll, riposte..), select proper difficulty (I recommend Death March od Blood and Broken Bones) and graphical settings that will get you 60fps (hardest on framerate is foliage distance, shadow quality and Hairworks).
Then there are couple mods that improve the experience and I consider them must haves: Immersive Cam with its submods (immersive motion, alternative horse control), Immersive HUD with a tweak, Sensible map borders.

Came away from this for a bit after getting started with blood and wine! Think I will continue tonight as I was getting really into it again but stopped for another game again!

I'm 63 hours into the main game and in skellige. Reckon i must be getting near the end now :(

Definitely tempted to buy the add on content for this fantastic game.

Get used to using Quen a lot.
Make good use of Yrden - the alternate version is handy as well.
I enjoyed using Aard late game - very good for crowds.
As said before, dodge is your friend. Don't try to go toe-to-toe.
Make use of the bestiary and oils if fights are a bit tough.
Take your time, explore and enjoy the beautiful sights. :)

I played on Blood & Broken bones but I'd probably do Death March if I were to play again. I'd have started playing Gwent a lot earlier too as I avoided it at first.

I haven't bothered playing Gwent since the first tavern at the beginning of the game. I'm on level 9 now. What is the advantage of playing Gwent aside from experience points?

Better cards (as long as you win), another way to earn some coinage, especially later on when there is a quest involving Gwent and I think you have to win it to trigger said quest and it has a handsome reward at the end of it. Hopefully not spoiled it to much there. :p

Initially I didn't care for gwent on the first encounter in White Orchard. Was going to play through the game and ignore this "waste of time" card game within a game...

...oh how that changed. :o

Now my Geralt is like an obsessive pokemon collector - gotta catch 'em all! I find myself actively looking out for merchants and other npcs to play gwent with. It's a damn addiction. :D

I'll have to give Gwent another go then. I haven't quite sussed it out yet - the changing cards at the start and that. I guess I'm a bit frustrated as I'm not quite sure what I'm doing but of course that would soon change if I played it a bit more. But yeah it is a bit like, my gaming time is precious and I just want to crack on with the game.

I never disabled them but they can be a distraction. I suppose there are arguments either way - you could miss a lot of places of power if you disable the markers and slow down your character development as a result.

White orchard is a small starting location and there are quite a few places of power so it is a nice bonus to explore them all there. But in Velen and further, the places are huge and exploration feels much more natural when you stumble upon things while exploring, without knowing something is there beforehand. Leaving the markers enabled feels a little ubisofty...if it was up to me, the markers would be disabled by default.

Ok guys cheers, i do like surprises, but i hate missing stuff also, if i chouse to explore the game myself, can i then at the end of w3 go back and find missing stuff etc ?
