The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I had hoped they were going to include the two expansion packs as a part of this patch but no such luck it seems, and Gog are charging more for the two than they are for the entire game atm !

Guys, I think the developers might have made a massive error that absolutely tanks performance, but I have a fix. Go to the game folder, bin, x64_dx12 and rename the file d3d11on12.dll to d3d11on12.dll.bak

This massively improved my performance from 30FPS looking at a pool of water to 65FPS and almost full GPU usage (raytracing was still working). I would speculate that the game seems to have been using this compatibility layer by mistake.

Credit to Bang4BuckPC Gamer on YouTube as he found you needed to do this to make the MSI Afterburner overlay work, but I was shocked that doing so more than doubled my performance too. Please try and report back.

Edit: on further testing it only seems to help in certain locations and when looking at bodies of water. Also, the performance increase sometimes doesn't happen so something strange is going on.

My display driver crashed when changing settings once so perhaps that's why they were using the compatibility layer, there could some instability if it's not used. Maybe they couldn't fix these problems and bodged it by using the compatibility layer, but that's speculation on my part.

Didn't do a before or after but my performance is looking better than what I saw for others with similar setups. RT is just lovely in this game :D Need to figure out best settings to use, that and might even turn sharpness up a bit as dlss is a bit soft here:

DLSS balanced or maybe even performance for this game.

Given developers have stated patch is coming, will hold of a bit longer though.

It does look lovely with RT. The lighting looks much better. However, I was wrong: renaming that dll did nothing, performance will just vary that much from run to run when looking at water. The game is obviously bugged.

Ok, installed and as you’ve all said, performance is rubbish. 1440p, dlss quality, all rt on, ultra+, no hair works. I’m seeing dips down to 35fps in Novigrad. Plenty of stuttering elsewhere. Gpu is often only at 80 or 85% when at the lowest fps, so as ppl have said there’s something going on with cpu loading.

Cpu here is a 5900x and gpu is a 3080FE

Renaming the dll file does work - fixed the gpu usage being low and now performance is a lot better.

/edit bear in mind there is a cpu issue in Novigrad, shouldn't be bottlnecking with modern cpu's.

From my testing I was wrong about this, performance just varies wildly in certain areas each time you start the game. It's totally bugged.

I did the DLL ‘fix’ too as that allows RTSS to work with Directx12, but i didn’t see any performance uplift. There could well be some, I just didn’t notice any if there is.

I need to vent a little bit here like an entitled nerd....

What a hot ******* mess of an update. Just got around to trying it and there are numerous issues immediately. Can't even be bothered going into it. What the holy **** has happened to game development? Serious question.

What's up with the CPU/GPU utilisation? Was trying this at 1440p DLSS quality and noticed GPU usage could drop down to 50% especially in novigrad. I changed it to 4k native and the framerate was the same hah, around 40-60 depending on the area with ultra+ all RT on.

But yeah this runs so bad if I was going to replay I'd go back to the old version and play at 200fps 4k native or wait for the rtx 5080/90 and 8800x3d CPUs since this isn't playable for me.

I've done 12 hours so far, no significant issues at all yet. Mind you, as I say, I dont have RT turned on so that might well be it.

Got a nice fps boost by using the new 2.5 DLSS, few frames extra.

So far with DLSS balanced, Ultra RT, everything else maxed out, (CA, MB and vignette turned off) including x8 HairWorks, I'm now getting 55-65 FPS at 3440x1440 with a 12700K @ 5.1 and an undervolted 3080 TIFE @ 1950/.9v.

Haven't been to a city yet (restarted), so will tank a bit there, I'm sure.

Even the controls are now borked. Using a controller (as I always have) I can't get above a slow walk.

EDIT - and AutoHDR doesn't work properly! There's no native in game HDR option which I was hoping for - Guess they couldn't be bothered implementing something as easy as that! I mean the game's only been out for 7 years. But at least AutoHDR worked before, now there's no AutoHDR message pop up and you can't adjust the slider in the Win+G menu - so it's not working. Pathetic.

Does nobody bother to test anything anymore? Seriously.

These days I find myself playing more and more old stuff that's been 'sorted out' and updated by the community. Play the Mario 64 Render 96 fork with raytracing or Zelda 64 PC Port. Absolutely sublime.
