The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I was getting 27-30fps at 3440x1440 RT with Ultra+ settings and not using FSR just to see it native. It choppy and stuttery though. With RT off but all same settings get 90fps. That is with my 6900xt. Changing between quite mode and rage mdoe did nothing in RT for the FPS. I didn't play long, just rode about a village and that. Was just to check out what had changed. You can certainly see difference with shadows interaction with foliage but there plenty of graphical issues with its implimentation tbh.

With this, Portal RTX and the Callisto Protocol my 3080 is starting to look weak. What convenient timing for Nvidia.

I feel slightly sorry for those who grossly overpaid for the 30 series last year. Thankfully I got my 3080 FE for MSRP and it wasn't worth a penny more.
Portal RTX uses path tracing, no current GPU is capable of 60fps in that without turning on an upscaler, and even then only just. Gotta use DLSS Performance modes to get even 45fps. This is the way it will be with path tracing.

Callisto barely makes a visual difference with RT enabled and steals 60fps with it on, runs at over 100fps with RT off, still looks next gen. The engine is unoptimised and the devs have admitted as such with the expectation of another patch to "further optimise" the game to come.

This DLC for WItcher looks like it is also a baked in RT update wth DX12 and no real reliance on optimisation. What is the CPU usage like in a busy area can anyone using RTSS verify? From what I am reading I would bet that even a mid range CPU is not sharing all cores evenly and thus we sit in a CPU limited land like Callisto with performance issues.

Optimised engine code seems to be a unicorn among game devs sadly and only a couple seem capable of it.

It's a game I'd like to play with the next gen update, but not if it's unoptimised like it seems to be.

How thoroughly depressing reading about the performance and problems. I've not tried it yet but I Have to say, why would we expect anything else in 2022? Have developers completely lost the ******* plot in the last few years? It seems that every single big game release these days is ****** on day one. And this isn't even 'new', it's essentially just been pimped.
Don't forget that CDPR delayed this update very significantly and it still released in this state. Imagine what it would have been like had it released when they said it would. I know it's free, but still.

I almost cried when I couldn't get past 40fps with all the ray tracing effects on and then realised vsync was on - for some reason it was halving my framerate, no idea why.

Anyway got a locked 60 with everything maxed out so happy with that :D
Hate games without vsync on, the graphics take a hit and oh man the tearing.

They have tweeted there are a few issues that need to be addressed

We are aware of the issues PC players have been reporting since last night's release of the update. We are actively investigating all of the reports and will be providing an update on particular issues as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience!

I jumped in for fifteen minutes or so earlier and it was a stuttery mess with low GPU utalisation.

yeah tbh I have noticed my gpu is like 50% usage lol. Hopefully that means even more performance to come.

Games developers absolutely cannot release a working product anymore, it's really sad. I know this is a free update but it just makes them look silly.

Guys, I think the developers might have made a massive error that absolutely tanks performance, but I have a fix. Go to the game folder, bin, x64_dx12 and rename the file d3d11on12.dll to d3d11on12.dll.bak

This massively improved my performance from 30FPS looking at a pool of water to 65FPS and almost full GPU usage (raytracing was still working). I would speculate that the game seems to have been using this compatibility layer by mistake.

Credit to Bang4BuckPC Gamer on YouTube as he found you needed to do this to make the MSI Afterburner overlay work, but I was shocked that doing so more than doubled my performance too. Please try and report back.

Edit: on further testing it only seems to help in certain locations and when looking at bodies of water. Also, the performance increase sometimes doesn't happen so something strange is going on.

My display driver crashed when changing settings once so perhaps that's why they were using the compatibility layer, there could some instability if it's not used. Maybe they couldn't fix these problems and bodged it by using the compatibility layer, but that's speculation on my part.
